Frontiersmen have existed throughout America’s history. According to Turner’s hypothesis, they push forwards for civilization and have shaped America. The stories All the Pretty Horses, The Gift of Cochise, and The Martian are all works of frontier literature. Each in their own way show frontiersmen during different times in America’s history with characters that interact with their respective frontiers in different ways. Through these three books one can see how the core interactions between frontiersmen and the frontiers call out the qualities of frontiersmen stated in Turner’s frontier hypothesis.

Mankind has been questioning the merit of such a way of development, when a human being starts relying on technology more than on oneself. Such questioning began as far back as the middle of the previous century. Ray Bradbury in his collection of short stories "The Martian Chronicles" makes numerous predictions regarding the future of technologies and their place within the society. Remarkably, he was not too far off in his assumptions. One of the primary ideas is that the technologies may occupy the role of the next deity that would substitute religion.

In the novel, Tom Sawyer the author, Mark Twain, tells a story about how a 12 year old boy, Tom Sawyer, becomes an adult by undergoing a test. Through this story Tom is faced with many hard and difficult decisions. He and his friend, Huck Finn, witness a terrible murder in which they have to come to a decision to tell the truth about the murder or keep mum and deal with the guilt. Tom also has to take a risk for Becky Thatcher, Tom’s crush. They also go on adventure to Jackson Island and him and Becky get lost in the cave.

The character Mark Watney in the book, “The Martian”, had to deal with a food shortage. In the story, Watney had to survive 549 days on Mars and had to produce around 149 days worth of food. Watney had to create an environment to plant potatoes. These plants would need water, heat, and nutrients. He obtained the amount of water with the amount he could get from the water reclaimed and separating hydrazine. Watney used an iridium catalyst and he would put a drop of hydrazine (rocket fuel) to get hydrogen and nitrogen gas. The atmospheric regulator would remove the nitrogen gas, but the hydrogen wouldn’t be removed. Then, Watney removed most of the oxygen from the hab and began the chemical reaction of the hydrogen and the oxygen becoming water.

Tension, humor, and foreshadowing are some examples of elements that readers will find in The Martian. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars. Because of a dust storm, Mark's teammates believe that he is dead and left him behind. The Martian is a science fiction book that gives readers an idea of how people might be able to colonize Mars and gives readers an idea of what space is like.
