When you come think about pets, your dog or cat, you think of how cute and cuddly they are and how much you love them and how much they love you. Your pet is like your child, an animal that will love you unconditionally and it's your responsibility to take good care of it. But there are some people out there that could care less about the animal that they decided to bring home. Many animals are often abused by their owners and a dog or cat doesn't have to be physically abused to feel neglected. There are two kinds of animal abuse and that is passive abuse and active abuse. Such things as not providing food or water, or not providing good shelter in bad weather conditions, or failing to provide medical care that can be seen as passive abuse. …show more content…
Animal testing can cause animals stress, sterility and boredom which will then cause some animals to develop abnormal behaviors such constantly spinning in circles and rocking back and forth. Some animals might start pulling out their own hair and biting their skin. The animals shake and cower in fear whenever someone walks past their cages touched by the human. After encountering life of pain, loneliness and terror, more than likely all of the animals will die. Puppy mills are legal but can still be classified as animal abuse, which is illegal. Puppies are kept in tight wire cages in the worst conditions. In the small wire cages puppies will end up getting hurt, maybe just a scratch or maybe losing a paw because of the holes and sharp wires on the floor. The puppies receive no medical care which causes puppies to get very sick and spread diseases. Dogs are killed once they are too old or too sick to reproduce (Animal Abuse Solutions). The only way we are going to be able to solve animal cruelty not just in America, but all around the world is if we talk. It in the children's hands because they are our future and it's up to them to end it, so we must teach them

What is animal abuse? For starters, animal abuse is when a person inflicts suffering or harm on any animal. Most people, all over the world own an animal; but there are still far more animals left out on the street. Homeless animals are either left out on the streets or are “thrown” into shelters. This became a problem because not all animals are domesticated. Animal shelters began as pounds. “When the system began to be used to impound wandering dogs and cats, these animals were often killed because little monetary value was placed on them” (Lila Miller, Animal sheltering in the United States: Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, 1) . This issue persists because shelter workers and others truly believe that an animal life has no value, but that is not true; animals are living beings just like humans with brains, hearts, and bones. A reported case was that “authorities had seized 23 puppies, 11 cats, and four adult dogs from a self-processed animal “rescue” after they were found in the “rescuer’s” filthy home.” (‘No-Kill’ Label Slowly Killing Animals, 3). This means that an unauthorized person hoarded many animals and forced the animals into an unsafe “shelter”. The shelter being a dirty home.
There are many different things that fall under the category of “cruelty”, neglect and abuse being the two main subcategories. The most common type of animal abuse involves dogs, Pit-bulls in particular. In 2007, of 1800 media-reported cases of animal cruelty, 64% (1,126) involved dogs, 18% (337) involved cats, and 18% (337) involved other animals. Some of the most common places where animal abuse occur are, in no particular order: fur farms, dog fights, laboratories, races (both Greyhound and horse), slaughterhouses, and puppy mills. Some less thought of forms of animal abuse are crush videos, traditional Chinese medicine, the cat/dog meat trade in Asia, the ivory trade, trophy hunting, and even shock collars. Abandonment is the leading form of animal cruelty. (See illustration.)
Animal cruelty is the worst thing to ever happen to animals. They do not deserve to be treated any type of way, they are just like humans. Thousands of animals are being abused every single day if you ever even thought about it. Why not care about them and not treat them right, they deserve to be treated right. There are animals that are treated differently, for instance home animals, shelter animals and homeless animals. Those three has things that are similar and opposite from each other. As of today we need to find way in order for all the cruelty to stop, because people do not want to be treated as the way animals are treated. For example of our saying “treat others the way you want to be treated and everything would go great”.
In America, we come across serious environmental issues about poverty, domestic abuse, ending world hunger ect. Animal cruelty isn’t one of those topics that isn’t being put out there more. We see it all around like the commercials on tv that tell you to donate money to help the poor stray dogs. People don’t see how much damage we can cause to them, but if we got together we can help stop this madness. In the article, Counting cruelty: Challenges and opportunities in assessing animal abuse and neglect in America it briefly says “Cruelty to animals is a crime.” (Lockwood 87). Laws were made for this problem way back. Our laws help keep society in a proper place with no hysteria.Which means people like us should pay attention more to our surroundings.
Each year, the most extreme cases of animal abuse receive media attention. Yet, the animal cruelty problem is more widespread than is reported in the media. Animal abuse and neglect is a nationwide issue, affecting thousands of animals nationwide. Cruelty to animals is defined as the infliction of physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, beyond what is necessary. There is a need to stop abusers from acting in such a horrific manner–preventing the neglect and suffering of the animals. What causes animal abusers to act in such a cruel way towards animals? How are cases of animal abuse being managed, and how should cases be handled? Finally, does the status of animals in society contribute to the rate of their abuse?
“I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter… the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. “God,” I said, “this is terrible! Why don’t you do something?” God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly, I have done something,” He replied. “
Thesis statement: The number of animal abuse cases of the United States are rising and the correlation between this crime and other forms of abuse is becoming more and more evident.
The article put even more perspective on the topic of animal cruelty. I have previously read about the harsh conditions animals are forced into as well as I have watched torturous videos. I was captivated throughout the whole article, especially through the gruesome descriptions. I could sense that the author is a clear activist against the killing, slaughtering, and raping of innocent animals. It was disturbing reading about all of the specific details, mainly the ones that involve her experiencing first-hand what occurs in the factories. The conditions are brutal for not only the animals but the humans working. From the reading, nothing seemed sanitary. Humans being exposed to those conditions can easily disable their health, especially with
I agree with Rifkin to the extent that animals deserve proper treatment and compassion. In the other hand, I don’t think we should go as far to compare ourselves with furry critters. Furthermore, I’m not saying to be abusive to animals; because all living creatures should be treated with care and respect because that’s the right thing to do. Humans have higher capabilities to obtain knowledge. As a result, makes us more aware about what we do. Major differences in livestock and domesticated animals are the fact that we grow emotional connections to our pets, while livestock are raised in multitude to feed our kin. Domesticated animals are household pets that pet
It is against the law to be cruel to or harm animals, even your own pets. It's also called animal abuse, or neglect. As if starving animals wasn’t enough there are cruel people whom actually beat poor innocent animals, just for the joy of knowing they have power or an animal’s life. Just because they know they can, and the animal can’t fight back and most likely one hundred percent of the time the animal doesn’t even know why it’s getting beaten on, it’s so sad how cruel and monstrous the human species can
Animal abuse also has an impact on the abuser. Sometimes it leads to bad decisions in the future. "A number of studies show that 70% of animal abusers lead to other crimes." Acts of animal cruelty are connected to other crimes, including violence with people, property crimes, and drug or disorderly conduct offenses. Seven boys who did schools shootings that took place in 1997-2001 have done acts of animal cruelty. (Animal Cruelty and Human Violence.) Patrick Sherrill who had a part time job as a mailman for the post office in Edmond, killed 14 co-workers before he shot himself. Sherrill had a deep history of dog fighting. (Animal Abusers blog) "Police know that in homes where animal abuse is a problem, other issues are often concurrent (Animal
Most Americans have pets like dogs, cats, and fish. Americans cherish many animals but some people use animals for different reasons that should be illegal. Many people visit zoos and don’t understand the treatment the animals go through. Animals are trained to go out and kill for people’s entertainment. All of these misuses of animals result in insignificant punishments. The use of animals constitutes animal cruelty because people don’t see that as a form of abuse.
Animal abuse and domestic violence occur in today's society and is overlooked by the general population, but should not be taken lightly. These forms of abuse are usually seen as different matters at hand, that is until the two become connected. Many people think nothing of this issue of animal abuse and domestic violence being connected, but little do they know this problem is continuing to grow everyday and you may not even know it. This issue is a very serious matter and should not be taken lightly. Adults or children in fact abuse animals to show and feel many different things. For example animals may be used as a pawn to show the victims what will happen to them if they either misbehave or not do as they are told. Also even victims themselves
Cruelty to animals can either be the unintentional and the intentional infliction by humans of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, regardless of whether the act is against the law. So much has happened recently that the US has broken it down into four categories, simple or gross neglect; intentional abuse and torture; organized abuse, including dogfighting and cockfighting; and animal sexual abuse (Fricker). The very first group of people in U.S. history to give laws for animal cruelty was the Puritans of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Throughout the years North Carolina and several other U.S. states have increased of passed more laws on animal cruelty and abuse. Defining animal abuse and cruelty can be broken down into six different
