Move through the Powerpoint slides and include verbal explanation in addition to the slides. Inform the students of the animal classification we use today was developed by Carolus Linnaeus, who was a Swedish naturalist who separated animals and plants according to certain physical similarities and gave each species a name. 5. Continue through the Powerpoint presentation, explaining that animals are classified on seven major levels. Go through each level: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Pause for a short moment to ask the students if there are any questions about the background of animal classifications. 6. Use a brown squirrel for an example. This example will be included in the Powerpoint presentation. Explain to students how one can determine what animal class a brown squirrel belongs to by discussing the characteristics of the brown squirrel, and how the characteristics fall into the determined animal class. 7. Ask students to join in on a classroom discussion by going over another example of a mammal, and how to determine the animal 's class. This discussion is included in the Powerpoint presentation. Discuss again with the students how similar characteristics of a group of animals determine the animal 's class. Reiterate how differences in the characteristics of animals make them in different classes. Take another short pause
