Writing to Solve a Problem: Animal Cruelty Cruelty to animals is not defined the same by all people. Cruelty encompasses physical and mental harm. By definition, any action that causes physical or mental harm to an animal would be considered cruel. The blanket opinion is most often unanimous, cruelty to animals must cease, there then begins the differing of opinions. The determination of what is considered acceptable treatment of animals, and what is considered cruel treatment has been dissected and divided through the years to meet the needs of different groups and cultures. When discussing the treatment of animals, often differentiated between are farm and domestic (household) animals. Animals that are domesticated, in many cultures, such as dogs and cats, are handled with utmost care and respect. Unfortunately, not all cultures are of the same thinking. There are cultures, in which the majority religion is Islam for example, that perceive dogs as dirty or dangerous. Dogs are considered slatternly by the teachings of the Koran. Muslims will not make contact with dogs unless they are able to clean their hands immediately. On the other hand dogs, in the United States and Japan, are often dressed in outfits such as a child might be. Dogs are often considered members of the family in these same countries as well. When thinking about concern for domesticated animals, cows can also be used as a reference. Cows are considered with as much respect, in India, as
Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse, animal neglect or simply animal cruelty, is both the unintentional and the intentional infliction by humans of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal regardless of whether the act is against the law.
Animal cruelty can be either deliberate abuse or simply the failure to take care of an animal. Either way, or whether the animal is a pet, a farm animal or wildlife, the victim can suffer terribly. Animal cruelty is an ethical and moral dilemma as there is no clear right or wrong answers that can solve all of the issues. There are numerous opinions on how this issue can be solved, these include;
Many jurisdictions around the world have enacted laws that forbid cruelty to animals but most of the time they vary by country and the use or
While the argument can be made that the animals are being treated equally as humans, others assert there is harm towards the animals. One should be concerned with the pros and cons about animals. All evidence considered, rather than harming animals, one needs appreciate and merit the animals.
Arguments can be made on whether being cruel to animals is harsh or fair but indeed my believes are that no matter who you are or what you are, no one deserves to be treated with such treatment. Animal cruelty, harms animals but arguments can be made on whether it can also affect humans as well . As the author Sarah West states in the Article Animal cruelty is something that we can all work together to prevent this issue that is affecting us nationwide.
I believe that animals are different than human beings. Animals should not be treated the same but I think it’s important to treat animals well and give them the same respect we demand for ourselves. Animals can feel pain and it isn't right to cause pain on them by being cruel. There are some things that you might do to an animal that you wouldn't do to a human. For example, you may put an animal to sleep to put it out of its misery if it has cancer and is going to die but you wouldn't put your grandmother to sleep in the same conditions. In the end, treat animals kindly but realize that they are not human
Some are due to personal reason or past bad experience, but for others, it has much to do with culture and the symbolism dogs are known for. For example, traditionally, dogs have been impure, and the Islamic legal tradition has developed several injunctions that warn Muslims against most contact with dogs (Dogs in Islam). Although it is quite odd that the sacred text of the Islamic religion, the Qur’an, says that it views all animals form communities “like you” meanwhile it mentions that they are so horribly dirty (Dogs in Islam). The intensity of punishment is so fierce in predominantly Islamic countries that one may be arrested for owning a dog (Communicaid).Others, such as the Chinese culture, have domesticated dogs for more than 7,000 and are closely related to agriculture and daily life in ancient China (ALONG). The original main purpose for dogs in china were either to send as a gift, or to have as a watch or hunting dog (ALONG). They have been a part of Chinese history for as far back as one can
Animals are an important and valued part of many families and cultures. In many households, animals are considered members of the family, receive Christmas and birthday presents, and are cared for just as a human child would be. Opposition to animal cruelty has even become a sort of universal value in American culture(Kordzek 604). But animals are uniquely vulnerable to abuse, and despite this they still do not receive much needed protection from the law. The penalties for animal cruelty are not frequently severe enough to even deter one from harming an animal. This is dangerous not only for animals, but for human beings too. Animal cruelty and domestic violence have been proven to correlate in countless ways, and recognizing animal cruelty as a serious criminal offense and a form of domestic violence would serve to protect both animals and human beings from needless acts of violence. Instituting stiffer criminal penalties for animal cruelty and increasing the protective measures for victims of abuse is necessary to further the protection of both animals and human beings.
Each year, the most extreme cases of animal abuse receive media attention. Yet, the animal cruelty problem is more widespread than is reported in the media. Animal abuse and neglect is a nationwide issue, affecting thousands of animals nationwide. Cruelty to animals is defined as the infliction of physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, beyond what is necessary. There is a need to stop abusers from acting in such a horrific manner–preventing the neglect and suffering of the animals. What causes animal abusers to act in such a cruel way towards animals? How are cases of animal abuse being managed, and how should cases be handled? Finally, does the status of animals in society contribute to the rate of their abuse?
In the last decade, the views and forms of animal cruelty have changed. Many people have different views of an animal’s rights or purpose. Some people believe that animals have no rights and are a piece of property to be utilized by humans. To others, animals can still be used by humans, but they have emotions as well. A few people consider that only certain animals with high intelligence like chimpanzees or monkeys, should not be used by man, and they should have all the rights that man has currently (“Animal Rights” , 2009). Domestic violence has a correlation with animal abuse. In a survey, 71% of domestic violence victims also reported that their abuser also targeted pets/animals. The most common animals who are abused are cats, dogs, horses,
I am an animal person so I would make a law that would toughen the penalty against people who commit animal cruelty. There are currently laws that prohibit animal cruelty, some of them being fins, and some face jail time. There are many people that do get punished at all for committing even the worst of animal cruelty. My proposal would be that everyone would get punished based on the crime. Most animal suffering is unrecognized. The punishment should be just like a person would get punished if they committed the same crime against another person.
What exactly is animal cruelty? Animal cruelty is actually categorized into two types: neglect to the point of cruelty and intentional animal cruelty. Sadly, animal cruelty in general is very common in today’s society and due to lack of awareness, is not talked about enough. Interestingly, no one technically has the constitutional right to own a pet. In most states, animals are considered property. However, animal owners have certain guidelines which they need to follow. Owning a pet does not give a person the green light to beat or starve it simply because the animal is his or her property. The less severe of the two types of animal abuse is cruel negligence. For example, animals cannot be left to sit covered in their urine and feces.
Animal cruelty is a crime that is more often than not dismissed and rarely brought to justice. You along with the Austin County Grand Jury need to enforce the rights of animals faced with cases of cruelty and slaughter and punish those who disrespect the creature’s right to live. Earlier this year, a woman named Kristen Lindsey participated in a despicable act of animal cruelty when she took the life of an innocent cat yet faced no charges. Her inappropriate displays of her “kill” aroused a huge controversy over the issues of hunting and the safety of our pets.
Animal abuse happens all across the world. Not many people are thinking about the harm done to animals each and every day, others don’t even care. There are many ways animal abuse can occur that many are not aware of, and some may be doing them and not even know it is abuse. Clothes made out of fur, animals in the circus, dogfighting, dogs chained up or tied to a rope in the owner’s yard, product testing, and whaling, are all examples of abuse. Even animals in some zoos are getting abuse. Animal cruelty is an extremely disturbing crime that can lead to serious harm or even death of innocent animals.
Imagine being experimented on daily, only to result in being locked up in a enclosure with nothing and nobody. Envision being deprived, isolated and used over and over again. Undoubtedly, animals go through these situations constantly with nothing but themselves. Scientist develop theories and statements, with the aid of animals, for a better understanding of life threatening diseases, when in reality their experiments keep animals secluded and distressed. When confronted with animal cruelty many people have mixed emotions of disgust and rage which eventually leads to combat for justice. Although experiments executed on animals may be useful for understanding life threatening diseases, it is brutal and can proceed to failure of the experiment, as well as deprivation and isolation of the organism.
