In the following essay, I will debate the issue of animal testing along with the manufacturers whom participate, and provide information for both sides. I will start by presenting some basic animal cruelty laws. The Animal Legal Defense Fund maintains a database of criminal animal cruelty cases in the U.S. reported to our organization. In the last ten years, over 30% of cases that we have tracked involve animal neglect (Animals Neglect Facts). Animal cruelty includes some of the following, torturing an animal, failing to provide food, care or shelter, abandoning an animal, killing, seriously injuring or poisoning an animal, causing an animal to fight with another, using a live animal as a lure in a dog race, etc. (Texas Animal Cruelty …show more content…
For every ingredient put into a product an animal goes though testing for it pain relief is rarely provided and the animals used are always killed at the end of each test (Humane Society.Org). Some makeup brands that continue to test on animals are MAC, Dior, and Tom Ford just to name a few the list goes on (Companies That Test on Animals). It does not stop at makeup other everyday used things test on animals such as, hair products, skin care, and soap. People have to take a moment and think about how much an animal suffered just to make their cheeks blush. On top of the cruelty, up to 90% of animals used in U.S. labs are not counted in the official statistics of animals tested (Do Something.Org). Exact numbers are not available because mice, rats, birds, and cold-blooded animals—who make up more than 99 percent of animals used in experiments—are not covered by even the minimal protections of the Animal Welfare Act and therefore go uncounted (Peta.Org). Accounting for the real number of animals including those not covered by the Animal Welfare Act would cause those numbers to look outrageously high. There should be supervised labs to ensure that the animals are not getting treated worse than they already are. Supervised labs would secure the animals are being cared for properly and are as comfortable as they can be while they are being tested on. The lab tests have long term damage some animals to develop neurotic types of behavior such as incessantly spinning in
While some have heard stories of animal testing, many are oblivious to how harsh the effects of the testing are. Ensuring the safety of makeup and other beauty products is definitely important, but the tests used today are inhumane and ineffective, but it is in the hands of the beauty industry to make the changes necessary to end it. Cosmetic companies should refrain from testing on animals because the tests are no longer necessary and they inflict unneeded pain on animals.
The destructive use of animals in experiments is not only cruel but also ineffective. Animal testing is a traditional approach to studying how human and animal bodies work. Many scientists who use animals debate that there is no other way to achieve their scientific purposes, and that any pain or distress caused to the animals is outweighed by the benefits of the research. However, is putting the lives of innocent, helpless animals worth it so that someone can enjoy a cosmetic product? On average over 115 million rabbits, dogs, cats, mice, and other animals are burned, poisoned and killed in painful experiments each year for the sake of cosmetics and toiletries. Many brands such as Dove, MAC, Maybelline, Veet, Michael Kors and plenty others
Approximately 26 million animals are used every year in the United States alone for research and commercial testing (“Background of the Issue” 1). For years, legislators have debated the pros and cons of animal testing, and laws were passed to attempt to fix the inhumane treatment of the cute, innocent testing subjects, the animals. Although the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was revised numerous times, “the species most commonly used in experiments (mice, rats, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians) comprise 99% of all animals in laboratories” and are the animals that are specifically exempted from protection under the act (“Experiments on Animals” 2). A simple fix to animal cruelty during testing is to use alternative methods since human and animal bodies already vary greatly. For years, animal testing was the best option because there was no alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system; however, in the age of technology, there is no reason for millions of animals to be killed due to the severity of the testing. Therefore, animal testing should be banned because alternative methods provide more accurate results since human bodies are very different than animal bodies; furthermore, animal advocacy organizations should promote cruelty-free products more so customers know what to purchase and use.
Imagine being born, only to live a life of torture. You are brought to a lab, and cruelly tested on against your will. Toxins poured into your eyes, painful injections to your skin, then left to die when you’re no longer useful. Although many do not realize it, people use products tested on animals in their everyday lives. For girls, many of your favorite makeup brands, such as Estee Lauder, Makeup Forever, and Maybelline take part in animal testing. Products such as toothpaste, cologne, deodorant, laundry detergent, razors, and even band-aids aren’t tested innocently, either. As a makeup enthusiast, I am passionate about how the products I use daily are tested. Today I will help you understand what animal testing is and how it started, how it’s currently affecting animals around the world, and what organizations are doing to help make a difference in the future. To begin, I will explain the history of animal testing. An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress, or lasting harm.(https://www.crueltyfreeinternational.org/why-we-do-it/what-animal-testing) Animal experiments are not the same as taking your animal to the vet. Animals used in laboratories are harmed, not for their own good, and usually killed at the end of an experiment. Animal experiments include injecting or force feeding animals with potentially harmful substances, exposing animals to radiation,
Animal testing has been a controversial topic for discussion for centuries. Major conflicting concerns that include, but are not limited to the morals and values of society today, are in my opinion where these issues stem from. For instance, some people seem to believe that by using animals for testing and experimentation is unethical and violating animals rights. Nonetheless, a cosmetic company using rabbits to test the irritancy levels of it’s products eyes for the purposes of making nonirritating cosmetics for women who will use such products in my opinion, is necessary for human safety and usage. I understand that the testing process may be painful to the rabbits, and understand why some may believe this is an act of animal abuse or
Did you know that more than 100 million animals die every year in U.S. labs? Many people believe it's wrong because it kills animals, but big companies still love it. Testing on animals can be traced back all the way to the 17th century in the UK during Harvey’s experiments to demonstrate blood. I believe that animal testing should be banned in the field of cosmetics, because there are already over 1000 ingredients already proven safe.
Over the course of many years, makeup has been an important part of society. Not only is it used for beauty, but also as a form of self-expression. Popular makeup brands such as Maybelline, Covergirl, and MAC are frequently advertised on TV, featuring celebrities to promote their latest lip products. At the same time, consumers are not aware of what happens inside the laboratories that make them. Every year, the U.S. Government spends billions of dollars on animal testing for cosmetics–but those animals in the lab are suffering, even when there are already more humane alternative ways to test these products.
Much progress has been made to end this testing, gearing the world into the right direction of animal testing free procedures, though, not everyone is on board. The United States have yet to hop onto the train toward a free animal testing future. The United States continues to test on animals for cosmetics even though there are numerous ways to test, without using animals, that are more efficient and effective than animal testing. (3D tissue samples of corneas made from human cells can be used instead of using an animal organ when testing for cosmetics side effects.) What is worse than the United States still testing on animals, is that there is continued demand for even more animal
All around the world, we use animal testing to develop new treatments, cures to crippling diseases, and to make sure products are safe for human use. In fact, approximately 26 million animals are tested on in the United States per year. This type of research has been practiced since before 500 B.C. Up until 1966, when the Animal Welfare Act was passed, this type of testing wasn’t regulated. Because of this, our testing methods have become cruel and remorseless. These days, animal testing has evolved into something horrifying and it should not be used nearly as much as it is.
All across the united states animal testing is being discussed over. People are discussing the treatment of all different varieties of animal species. The controversy has erupted about how animals are being treated, how we should handle it, and what should be done about it.
Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, is the use of animals in experiments to test product safety. I believe it is a big problem in our society. Every year at least 2.7 million animals are killed in laboratories in Australia alone and at least thirty-three animals die each second worldwide, due to cruel animal tests. Many companies feel it is okay to test on animals because they are deemed not as physiologically or emotionally complex as humans, but as animal rights supporter, Jeremy Bentham has said, “The question is not, ‘Can they reason?’ nor, ‘Can they talk?’ but rather, ‘Can they suffer?’ and most of the time the animals do suffer.
Should innocent creatures suffer for human vanity? Are there any alternatives to animal testing? Often times, cosmetic companies conduct animal testing to prove the efficacy and safety of their products prior to selling in certain international markets. Without the intent of ever making the test humane for the benefit of the animal. Countless of helpless animals have been left injured because of this and in some cases, have died. Animal testing in the cosmetic industry should end, as there are viable alternatives to this practice, animals are suffering, and it is unreliable.
Since the early BC’s, many people, scientists, researchers, and companies have been forcing live animals to be used to test their products on, to study behavior effects, etc. However, in today’s times, people are questioning whether or not animal testing should even be allowed. This query of whether or not to allow animal testing or not is essentially related to how humane it is, and how well it works. As a result, this matter is an extremely contentious one and has allured a lot of discussion. This essay will examine a couple of the discussions on why animal testing is not alright for companies to do, and will profile any of the problems along this situation. It will then state the reasons I think animal testing should be legal, which would be, we eat more than we test, animals have a shorter life cycle than humans, and animal research has helped scientists develop modern vaccines.
When I apply my favorite blush, I get so happy because it enhances my beauty along with other products I use on my face. What does not cross my mind is that this product was probably tested on an animal. Most women do not realize that most of their makeup has been used on animals. Makeup is a popular product tested on animals among other products that you would never think of. It makes sense for people to kill animals to provide food but why do companies test on animals knowing it could harm them? Animal testing is when experiments are made on animals to test the effectiveness and safety of a product. The purpose of this is to see how the test subject reacts to whatever is being tested on them because humans and animals have a similar physiology. Depending on how the animal reacts to the product, it gives an idea on how a person might react to using the product. This type of research goes back to the days of Aristotle, who was one of the first to perform animal testing.
The makeup industry has flourished for as long as one can remember. The popularity of beauty bloggers, celebrity makeup lines, etc. have actually led to a record-breaking boost in makeup sales. Cosmetic brands have become more prominent, and makeup stores such as Sephora and Ulta continue to thrive. However, various demands must be met in order to keep up with the growing consumership, and one of the most controversial topics contributing to the success of the makeup industry is animal testing. Animal testing has been a hotly contested topic for decades yet still exists to this very day; it is an unethical and harmful way to measure the potential side effects of cosmetic products, and an alternative method must be enacted.
