The species dog has changed due to natural selection and has adapted to to an arctic environment. In the dogs original habitat gives a medium coat of fur but as it started to adapt to the arctic weather it started to grow more thicker fur to regulate its body temperature. So they need this adaptation to survive so the can reproduce and make more thick coated dogs. And the dogs that can’t adapt so they start to die of and the ones that adapt are the survival of the fittest. Another adaptation is growing sharper nails to have more traction with the icy ground. And with shaper nails they could be more agile than the predators like the polar bear that could chase the dog. And the dogs with not sharp nails will slip and have no traction and
The Arctic fox is compareble in size to the domestic cat. It inhabits the so-called kingdom of the polar bear the area midway between Norway and the North Pole. This canine predator changes to extreme weather conditions. During the winter months, it’s white coat is ideal camouflage in these rough northern climates. The Arctic fox can roam all winter without hibernating its fur is the thickest of all Arctic mammals. Its insulation permits it to grow even though winter temperatures normally fall to -50 degrees Celsius. When nutrition becomes scarce, the Arctic fox may follow polar bears as they pursue seals on the perilous sea ice. This strategy is hazardous not only because of the possibility of falling into freezing water, but also because
One of the first ways the theme of survival of the fittest is shown is when one of the dogs on Bucks sled dog team named Curly was attacked by other dogs and killed. On the sled dog’s journey they stop to sleep and rest, but one of the times that they stopped they got something they didn’t expect. One of the dogs named Curly was really friendly and went over to see the other dogs that weren’t on her sled dog’s team. Curly then got attacked by dogs that she had never met. “But she lay there limp and lifeless in the bloody, trampled snow, almost literally torn to pieces, the Swart half-breed standing over her and cursing horribly” (London 17). This proves that survival of the fittest was in The Call of the Wild because some dogs just weren’t fit for the Klondike. Like Curly and many other dogs and some people were just not fit for the Yukon. Some dogs and people just didn’t have the characteristics to survive in the Yukon, some changed their characteristics like Buck did and some like Curly thought that all the dogs were nice like she had known before.
The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) is a bear native largely within the Arctic Circle encircling the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and land masses. Although it is closely related to the Brown Bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological forte, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet. Though there are many theories surrounding evolution, the two stand outstanding hypotheses applying to the modification from Brown Bear to Polar Bear are Lamarck’s theory of Use and Disuse, and Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection. The intention of this paper is to compare these thesis and determine the most appropriate in
The adaptations of a Arctic Wolf are small ears to reduce their surface area to volume ratio and compared to other the grey wolf and other subspecies arctic wolves have proportionally smaller ears. This means that there is less surface area to lose heat from compared to the larger ears of their more southern wolves. They also have thick camouflaged seasonal fur and because the coat of the arctic wolf is always thick and highly insulating they can stay warm during the coldest times of the year and there are inner and outer layers to the fur
The brown bear acquired a mutation which is a permanent change in the Dana sequence. The mutated trait turned their coat white in order to bland into the snow; this is the reason for the polar bears white fur. A mutation also caused their teeth to become better shaped for ripping apart seals rather than munching berries. Their white fur allowed them to camouflage into the snow-covered surrounding giving them hunting advantages. Scientists believe that at first these bears scavenged seal carcasses that had washed ashore, and gradually began to hunt the seals by waiting at the water’s edge as the seals surfaced to breathe. This is an important step into the evolution of this new subspecies of bear. The bears evolved these changes relatively quickly because they had to adjust to extreme conditions and a harsh environment.
Many species of animals have had to adapt to their living enviroments. Some animals such as anglerfish, have had to go through major adaptations by developing a fishing pole like spine, descending from the middle of it's head. Others such as polar bears have had more of a minor adaptation such as, learning to bury themselves deep into the ground into small chambers. Both polar bears and anglerfish have had to go through many perplex yet astonishing adaptations.
The polar bear has to be able to stay warm in the harsh winter cold. In fact sometimes because they have such thick fur they have to lay down on the snow to cool off so the harsh cold isnt even enough to keep them up to tempreture.
Nevertheless, it is important to mention the effects global warming has had on the Artic. Among these effects, we can mention the rising temperatures that result in the loss of sea ice and the melting of the ice sheet. Also, the negative impact it has on tundra vegetation’s composition that as a consequence causes the loss of the Arctic’s fauna’s
Since they can live off of raw meat, that is was they consume while on the trails. They always need a diet that is high in protein to keep their muscles strong, and fat to fatten them up, and grow out their coat so they stay warm during the cold times on the trail. In the novel, since Perrault and François ran low on meat from the event of the wolf attack in there camp, the dogs got skinnier, their coats became thin and didn’t keep them warm, and they lost energy from the lack of meat, and they weren’t able to run the trails very well. Dogs need to be feed twice a day, and the sled dogs in the novel couldn’t be, because they had no
Some dogs are small, some are big, then others are medium size. Some can get as small as a library book. Some can get as big as a 3-4ft.The medium size dogs are usually between your knees and your ankle. The small dogs are usually at your ankle or a little above the ankle.
The continent of Africa is home to some of the most unique and fearsome creatures known to man. It ranges from giraffes and onyx to lions and tigers. However, with hunting and changes in environment, populations have begun to dwindle and species have become vulnerable and endangered. One of these species is the African Wild Dog, or Lycaon pictus. The population is becoming smaller, threatening the special species with extinction. It is a unique dog that has been known to run up to 44 miles per hour, and can be seen taking down prey much larger than itself (Creel, 2002). The African Wild Dog is a very unique creature in that it has its own behavior, population, community, and ecological interaction that is being threatened, but with the proper conservation efforts it can be saved for the future.
As stated, the Arctic wolf is shorter and has longer hair, so they can adapt to their environment. This shows that they live in Greenland and in the Arctic regions of North America. The air rarely rises above -30 degrees Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit), therefore the ground is permanently frozen. According to www.wolfquest.org, the Arctic wolf's main prey is Muskoxen and Arctic hare, but they will also eat Peary caribou, Ptarmigan (type of bird), Lemmings (small rodent), seals, and nesting birds. According to switchzoo.com, Polar bears, other wolves, and humans all pose as a threat to the wolves.
Many years ago when we were still primitive, the dog's ancestor was a wolf, but how a wolf turn in to a dog. Neil likes to called the survivor of the friendliest. A wolf is a hunting animal; they are made to catch their prey but what happens when a human influence how the wolves feed themselves. They turned into a dog, basically Neil says that instead of us trying to kill the wolves we fed them. The wolves that were being fed by humans learned to be friendly that way if was easy for them to eat.
The Siberian huskies or huskies used for winter transport were originally bred by the Chukchi people of northeastern Asia, a semi-nomadic group, who depended on their dogs to transport their families and their belongings to seasonal hunting grounds. The Chukchi people bred the huskies to travel to places and travel to get food. Other people say that the huskies came from Britain and other places but that's not true. The huskies were also used to transport wounded people and dogs.
As stated above the arctic weasel uses its preys burrows and fur in order to insulate and prevent the environment from taking its toll on the weasel’s body temperature. The polar bear uses a tactic that involves Rayleigh scattering in order to capture radiant energy that is being reflected off the snow and ice in the arctic environment. The hairs on the polar bears coat trap this radiant energy from the sun and bounce it around allowing its black skin to absorb the heat energy before the excess radiation waves escapes.
