When given a certain amount of power, even the most humble of people can fall subject to corruption. Likewise, one who is already an unjust figure is more than capable of becoming a tyrant. Such is the case in Animal Farm, a novel by George Orwell. Animal Farm focuses on the rebellion of the animals on Manor Farm, and their attempt at a socialism-esque society. The leaders of the farm, two pigs named Napoleon and Squealer, gradually change from fair authority figures to unethical dictators. Orwell’s critically acclaimed novel Animal Farm establishes a theme of how leaders can be corrupted by power through the characters of two pig dictators on the farm, and their former master Mr. Jones. Additionally, Squealer’s counterpart, Napoleon, is also corrupted by a place of authority. A prime example of this is when Napoleon slaughters a multitude of farm animals who claim to be in contact with Snowball, Napoleon’s rival. During the aforementioned scene the narrator describes the slaughter, saying, “When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out” (84). Napoleon ensures his position by killing all animals that question him, as demonstrated in the preceding quote. Because Napoleon rules in such a domineering fashion, the animals are too afraid to speak out against this act. Napoleon therefore uses his power to do as he wishes, ensuring that no one will speak against him. In addition, Napoleon eventually becomes as corrupt as his human predecessor and renounces the original customs of Animalism. When Napoleon is talking with Pilkington and his men, he can be heard abandoning the traditions of Animalism, even saying that Old Major’s skull is to be taken down from it’s post. The narrator states, “Henceforward, the farm was to be known as Manor Farm” (140). Napoleon has become completely humanlike, and completes this transformation by undoing the work of the rebellion. This represents the ultimate act of corruption because the entire rebellion, which has been worked so hard for, is being erased.
