A dictator is an authoritarian, often totalitarian ruler who assumes sole power over his state. They have an extraordinary amount of personal power, especially the power to make laws without effective restraint by a legislative assembly. Dictators need many essential elements to succeed. There are three elements that the dictator, Napoleon has in the society in Animal Farm. The three essential elements that a dictator needs to succeed are loyal supporters, followers who are ignorant, and a scapegoat. First of all, a dictator needs loyal supporters. Loyal supporters are people (animals) that follow their dictator, defend their dictator, and are faithful to him one- hundred percent. All dictators need to have loyal …show more content…
They never turn on Napoleon, because they are faithful to him. Those are the reasons why dictators need loyal supporters. Secondly, a dictator needs followers who are ignorant. Those are peopling who are not very smart, and ever question, or stand up to the dictator. They always follow him no matter what he does to them, or to anyone else, and no matter if it’s good or bad. Napoleon has many followers who are ignorant. Some of them are Boxer, Clover, the sheep, and Muriel. No matter what Napoleon says, commands, or makes them do, they always follow him without asking questions. They are dumb enough to go along with everything that Napoleon is doing, and they always think that he is always right, and everything they think or remember is always wrong. Some examples are like the Battle of the Cowshed, and the seven commandments. When all the animals remembered that Snowball fought bravely in the battle of the Cowshed, Napoleon told them that it was a part of his plan, and he was always bad. Also, when Squealer kept changing the commandments by adding details that all the animals thought were wrong, Napoleon always assured them that what they remembered was wrong, and that those were how the commandments had always been. But, when any of those things happened and all the animals thought they remembered correctly, they were dumb enough to not ask questions, and speak up about what they remembered. That is why it is important to have followers who are
This overthrow was a premeditated thought, as he had previously taken a litter of dogs away from their mothers, “kept them in a loft…and the rest of the farm soon forgot their existence.'; Napoleon had previously calculated how to obtain ultimate power, and eliminates all of the thoughts or animals opposed to his regime.
For example, he prosecuted many innocent animals. During a meeting with the animals, Napoleon violates one of the most important rules on the farm. “Immediately the dogs bounded forward, seized four of the pigs by the ear and dragged them, squealing with pain and terror, to Napoleon’s feet” (74). The worst sort of a leader is one who will murder one of their own citizens in order to establish fear, which is precisely what Napoleon did. Corruption can cause leaders to commit many dreadful acts, but death is amongst the worst of them all. This is not just an example of corruption, but it is indefinitely a sign of dictatorship. Next, Napoleon sends Boxer to the knackers. Shortly after Boxer sustains an injury, Benjamin, the old donkey that normally refuses to read, discovers where the pigs are sending Boxer. “Alfred Simmonds, Horse Slaughterer and glue boiler, Willingdon. Dealers in hides and bone meal! Kennels supplied. Do you not understand what this means? They are taking Boxer to the knackers!” (108). Napoleon is the worst example of a leader, because he lies and betrays his own citizens. Boxer was the most loyal, hardworking animal on the farm, but Napoleon’s corruption from power causes him to simply send Boxer to the knacker, without hesitation. Power leads Napoleon to do whatever he , as he was the rule maker and no one was going to stop him from sending Boxer
Dictatorship is a form of government where one person is in full control of everything. According to the text, “The dictator generally controls the three states of power: legislative, executive, and judicial” ( Kids.net.au). Because of this, the dictator may do what he wants with the three branches of government and these branches are how the government is run. According to the text, “Sometimes dictators orchestrate phony elections in an attempt to grant themselves some illusion of democratic legitimacy and public
Animal Farm, by George Orwell was published in 1945, a crucial time in history because of Stalin’s takeover of the Soviet Union and his exploitation of the centralized communist government. This was in direct contradiction to the expected results of the Russian Revolution. Orwell felt that revolutions fail because the end result is a change of tyrants and not of government. Orwell exemplifies this failure through the goals of the revolution and their failure to meet them, the malfunction of Napoleon and Snowball’s rule together, and Napoleon’s disastrous reign.
Napoleon Bonaparte was an absolute dictator of France and he shows this by making every decision himself, thinking of himself as better than
When thinking about pigs, you generally associate them with being dirty, repulsive and gluttonous. Well, that's Napoleon. In the novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell Napoleon is a pig on Manor Farm who slowly exerts power over others and begins his reign as a dictator. Napoleon takes over and renames the farm Animal Farm while being completely deceptive and unfair. Napoleon is a prime example of how absolute power corrupts absolutely because he is unjust and doesn't care for the wellbeing of any of the other animals on the farm but himself.
In a totalitarian dictatorship there is an official ideology, covering all aspects of a man’s existence to which everyone living in that society must adhere. A totalitarian dictatorship is also a single mass party led typically by one man the “dictator” and has a system of terroristic police control in order for the dictator to remain in power [doc 1]. Totalitarian governments also had total control over the military, economy and means of communication such as newspapers and propaganda.
A dictator is defined as a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who obtained power by force. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Jack Merridew is the equivalent of a dictator to the boys of the island. Jack’s peculiar leadership style lead to both success and failures.
A dictator is a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained power by force. One of the most popular cases of dictatorship was Adolf Hitler, a German politician, who eventually gained control of multiple countries. In the text, Lord of The Flies, one of the main characters, Jack, is a horrific, cruel little boy who shows traits to that of Hitler. Many comparisons of the two can be made in the book, such as how they gained their power of their groups, why and how they have such power, and their mission, once their group had assembled.
Imagine living in a world where politics are everything and all forms of individuality and personal identities are shattered. A world where everybody is stripped of their rights to talk, act, think, or even form their own opinions, simply because they do not agree with the government’s beliefs. These aspects are just a few of the examples of things dictators would have control over in a totalitarianism form of government. Aggressive leaders such as Hitler and Joseph Stalin are examples of such dictators. They used their power for terror and murder, and their motive is simply to maximize their own personal power. George Orwell had
Dictators are criticized because of the amount of power they possess. With complete power, they can implement any laws, even biased and unjust laws. The possibility of inequity causes fear and anger in citizens and in turn, leads to the criticism of a dictator.
Dictatorship throughout the ages has mainly led to oppression and conflict between people and government. Some of the notoriously bad dictators took office around the 1920’s and 1930’s. There were three main dictators in that time period and they all ran different countries in very different ways. Josef Stalin was known as the dictator of the Soviet Union, he was all about communism and did not care if there was opposition to his ideas. On the other hand, Benito Mussolini was in charge of Italy and all about fascism. Possibly the worst known dictator of all times was Hitler, in charge of, Germany, he was all about Nazism. Each had a different outlook on ruling, but they all did things similarly to lead to nations hatred against them. Basically, their ultimate goal was to do what was best for their countries, however, there want for power tended to get in the way. They all wanted to accomplish many things, they used many different ideas and ways to run their nations. They were all blamed for their nations demise in one way or another. This essay will discuss the similarities and differences between Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini.
One reason Napoleon remains in charge because of causing the animals fear. Napoleon uses the nine of dogs as his bodyguards. In Document B, the dogs were vicious towards the animals and would kill anyone who disobeyed Napoleon. The dogs would slaughter the animals like they were never “comrades”. Napoleon also used Farmer Jones coming to the farm to scare the animals. The animals dreaded Jones coming back. As in Document C, Squealer says, multiple times, “Surely, comrades there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?” This rhetorical question always reassures the animals to do what Napoleon says. The fear of the dogs and Jones returning persuades the animals to do as Napoleon commands.
The way that I see how dictators and tyrants led people in ancient times and modern times was that they either was force to accept them as their leader or actually accepted them. In ancient times, it was normal to have a leader because the leader is supposed to protect them from the other countries that they possibly ran from. Sometimes even if the people feared their leader, there was nothing they could have done about it since most were possibly poor. Some just accepted it even if they didn’t want to because it brought people to show up to their city to live and it gave merchants much more money than what there was before. The dictators and tyrants promised the people in both ancient and modern that they would protect them if they were to
A tyrant is a cruel and oppressive ruler. Tyrants are egoistic, narcissistic, and may have issues regarding their own self-esteem. Tyrants are absolute rulers and abuse their powers. Tyrants gain their power many different ways, such as control of a government due to an overthrow, vote fraud or the control of public information. Although there have been many tyrants featured in history, there is no doubt that many of those rulers cannot even begin to compare to the tyranny committed by Napoleon Bonaparte.
