Animal Testing And Animal Cruelty

What would you do if you saw someone slowly torching an animal to death. The background of animal testing is defined as some say it is cruel and some say it is necessary. In recent discussions of animal being used as test subjects. On one hand, some argue that it is cruel and inhuman. On the other hand, some say the test could not be performed without the animals. My own view is, I strongly am against animals being used as test subjects. Some view the test that are performed on the animals as innocent and harmless, it is clear that the test are cruel because the test torture the animals, and some test are inhuman.

But those animals will never be the same as they were before. They may have trust issues against people, or they may hide in dark corners because they are still terrified that the people who are now caring for them will still harm them. Now you may be thinking “ well they are just animals “ but they have feelings too. If the government were to take you away and lock you in a cage with as much food as you need to not starve to death. You would be miserable but on top of that they are also testing on you with things that could do a variety such as burns, sickness/disease, and in some cases

As of 2015, 200 to 225 million animals are said to used in laboratory research for the biomedical industry annually worldwide. Typically defended by arguments of reliability and human health benefits, recently the question of ethics and values placed on animal testing have caused it to become a relevant and pressing topic that has been more widely discussed and debated. First off, the laboratory conditions that are instigated upon millions of animal models for the sake of medical research has been said to be unethical and cruel. Additionally, it has been debated that the results of animal experimentation are unreliable across a wide range of areas. Lastly, animal testing not only leads away from the direction of resources from more effective testing methods but also prolongs the duration of time humans may need to wait for an effective cure. Therefore, the potential benefits of animal experimentation are greatly outweighed by the risks and collective harm of humans and animals which is why resources should be directed towards more human-based testing procedures.

Many people often oversee the effects of animal testing. This has been going on for decades and many are unaware of the results and the damages animal testing can cause. Animals undergo a lot of stress and pain when they are put through experimentations. Many have debated that it is unethical to test on animals while others say it helps to protect the safety of humans. In my opinion, animal testing is cruel and should be made illegal. Their lives are just as important as human lives and should not be treated as experimental animals. The system of an animal differs from the human system, therefore even if a tested product did not harm the animal, it may or may not be harmful to humans. Hence, our body system reactions differ from the bodies of an animal. It has been scientifically proven that 90% of the animals being tested in labs results in death while only a handful of animal experiments are successful. There are multiple alternative methods rather than forcefully harming innocent animals. I will explore how animal testing can affect the health of the animals and if there is possibly a better alternative rather than testing on animals.

Animal testing is a common practice in current life that is necessary to ensure the safety of the humans that will be using the tested product. There are many good and bad aspects of animal testing, but the pros clearly outweigh the cons. Animal testing has been around since ancient times when animals were dissected to gain knowledge about the body and organs. The animals killed from animal testing make up a tiny percentage of the total animals killed every year. When just considering the animals used for food compared to the animals used for testing, testing animals make up a mere 2.6 percent of that number. Public safety far outweighs the lives of the small amount of animals killed.

What is animal testing? Animal testing is when scientist experiment on animals to find cures for diseases, and development of medical treatments. Many animals die because of this. Majority of people don’t know what they go through and how the process is done. Animal testing is inhumane for the following: why it is done, how it is done, and when it is done.

Animal abuse is when someone mistreats or inflicts pain on an animal. Even not feeding them is a form of animal abuse. Animal abuse is a major problem in America. When looking at why animals are treated the way they are today, it is important to think about the history of animal abuse, the rate at which animal abuse is reported, why people mistreat animals, and current animal rights advocacy groups.

Millions of animals suffer due to effects of testing they must endure. This testing is usually done unethically and causes major harm. It’s wrong to harm animals for the sake of testing products for society. Furthermore, animals are living creatures just like humans and should not be treated differently. While testing animals may be cheaper, it is morally wrong and causes many harmful side effects in animals.

A rabbit lives its life trapped in a laboratory. It doesn’t get fresh air and has different products tested on it every day. The product can make the rabbit go blind or cause its skin to burn, but there is nothing the rabbit can do about it. This is what happens to animals every day from cosmetic companies who test their products on animals. According to Cruelty Free Kitty (2017), over 30 cosmetic companies continue to use animal testing to improve their products. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (2017), “the agency has consistently advised cosmetic manufactures to employ whatever testing is appropriate and effective for substantiating the safety of their products.” This means that if the company believes animal testing is the best option for their product they are allowed to do it. Testing cosmetics on animals is cruel and inhumane, and people should avoid using products that test on animals.

For decades, people have been using animals as the go-to method for testing scientific breakthroughs, but not only is this concept outdated, it is a cruel punishment inflicted on harmless creatures. Animal cruelty is a well-known problem around the United States that is a growing issue for debate. A study has shown that less than 2% of human illnesses are found in animals and over 98% are ineffective on animals (Peta2). “The Food and Drug Administration reports that 92 out of every 100 drugs that pass animal tests fail in humans” (PETA). Not only does animal testing hurt the animals, it is a waste of time. These are just some of the reasons why animal testing is pointless and should be banned. It is time that the United States recognizes animal testing as unacceptable because of its negative effects on both humans and animals: it is inhumane for many reasons, it proves to be very expensive and costly, and it’s pointless on many accounts.

Animal testing is remarkably cruel and inhumane. Animals that are used for testing are put in cages and isolated. They are usually, they are taken almost casually, housed appallingly, and denied anything close to a life (Newkirk). These animals are trapped their whole life and are stripped of their ways of life. Not to mention that within some of these laboratories, universities, and every other place that animal testing is conducted in, researchers treat animals very poorly. In one place, "workers were caught punching dogs in the face, screaming at the animals, and even simulating sex with each other while trying to inject a frightened beagle" (Newkirk). Not only do researchers do those cruel actions, but some "experimenters force-feed chemicals to animals, conduct repeated surgeries on them, implant wires in their brains, crush their spines, and much more" (PETA). Some may say that this does not happen and that animals do not experience pain anymore due to new laws, like the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). But, the truth is, these "laws" do barely anything, if nothing, to help stop the cruel

The testing of animals in the cosmetic industry is purely inhumane, due to the fact that the benefit of testing does not prove to be as useful to offset the negative impact it has on animals, or offset the value of alternatives testing. “The thinking, feeling animals who are used in experiments are treated like nothing more than disposable laboratory equipment.” The scientist testing on animals should not treat animals like they are not living, conscious beings. The amount of suffering inflicted upon animals is inessential and repugnant for the selfish purpose of humans to increase their physical appearance; it is not a necessity for people to change their appearance through cosmetics. A law should be passed to outlaw the testing being done on animals for cosmetic purposes because there are alternatives that are more effective, cheaper, and humane then testing on animals.

An estimate of 1.4 million animals die each year due to animal testing. As people we have freedom, choice, and the right to live, however animals have a right to live in a world without suffering just as much as we do. Animals just like humans have emotions, thoughts, and feelings, so what makes it right to test on animals any more than to perform tests on humans? The benefits of testing on animals has still not been proven as the treatments that show promise in animals rarely work on humans. There are also many other options for testing techniques that we can use without performing harmful tests on animals, and finally it's entirely unethical. There are many alternatives overall so it is really still considered ethically right to take the freedom of animals just because we want to do research. Animal testing should no longer have a place in our modern day world.

Animal testing is a very necessary process for human survival; This is the "survival of the fittest", animal testing helps us know what is safe and what's not. The human race requires accurate results in order to overcome viruses and other fatal extremities. We need animals as a recource for survival. A lion will not refuse to harm a zebra because if he does that lion will die.

Most animals in animal testing, like hamsters and mice, are rarely protected by animal testing laws and often die during or waiting to be tested on (NEVAS). The cycle of abuse is prominent in the testing environment. There has been many trial and errors when it comes to formulating laws and regulations. A few that have been effective and are still here today are the Animal Welfare Act and the PHS Policy. The government implications on animal testing haven't inhibited the progress that could be made in science, but rather it has tried to make the conditions ethical.
