A MODEST PROPOSAL FOR DECREASING THE RATE OF PETS ABANDONED BY OWNERS WHO CAN CARE FOR THEM TEMPORARILY, AND TO INCREASE SPACE IN ANIMAL SHELTERS FOR TRANSFERRED OR ABANDONED PETS.

Such a tragedy it is for a family house pet, like a dog or kitten, to ride in the back seat of their owner’s car; either in a crate or on a leash; hoping to reach a destination for a day of play with their owner, only to find themselves in a place unknown. With that the owner, either stationed in the driver’s seat, standing side by side with their pet, or settling down the crate where the pet is occupied on the ground, lets the animal roam freely with a ball or “go” signal. I, however, am only introducing an option that is likely to be the last option an owner can choose from to realize what is right for their pets. Different options suggested in the past that could have benefit for the greater good of the animal population were utterly ignored or a failure to attempt. These suggestions included: attempting to put unwanted pets for adoption at local pet stores, spay or neutering pets to prevent excessive rankings of litters in the shelters, or thinking twice and having a heart before abandoning pets in the open. The avoidance in which these types of owners commenced with the suggestions mentioned above prove their irresponsibility to treat their pets respectfully and temporarily. From my experience, these suggestions were not always the case for most pet owners. For that, I cannot decide what other living condition for our four-legged friends is appropriate for their safety like the great outdoors. It is best for the animals to inhabit an environment entitled to their inheritance instead of the many departments they are transferred to where they struggle to be comfortable in cramped cages. I usually see collarless dogs wondering around the streets in a fidgety matter as if they are searching for someone. Some of my family members like my aunt and sister ran into a couple strays, mainly kittens and Chihuahuas, and they took care of them for a certain amount of time before the animals had to be taken to the pound. My sister, though, is caring for a kitten that was left alone during a storm. I would also keep seeing news reports of neglected animals abandoned outside their owners’ houses either chained up or found in alleys. It upsets me to realize how some owners disrespect their pets to a point where they leave them behind. It is also difficult for the shelters having to collect animals on a daily basis due to space.
