Should animals continue to be treated as property? In the law they don’t, but I think they should. Animals are beings with emotions; therefore, they should be respected. Animals should not be used in the circus because the animals in this are being incarcerated. They are being forced to do unnatural things so they can avoid the animal abuse used in training. Trophy hunting should stay legal for the simple fact that this is how must wildlife conservations are funded. It’s easy for us to criticize them as inhumane, but how else can poor countries get the money needed to fund this. Sometimes the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Also, I agree that livestock are raised to be eaten and should be, but I don’t agree with the ways that we treat them. We should treat them with respect both before and during slaughter. While animals in the eyes of the law are seen as property, this does not mean that man should be cruel to animals. They are beings that should be respected.
In a perfect world, circuses would ban the use of entertainment animals. When one buys a ticket to visit the circus, they are contributing to animal cruelty. Circuses use violence to train the animals, so that they can do demeaning acts. It is not natural for elephants to balance themselves on a ball, or for tigers to jump through rings of fire. During all the acts, the training will stand off to the side with a whip ready to beat the animal when they don’t want to perform. Circuses claim that they
There are many types of animals used for entertainment such as circuses, dog fighting, zoos, and rodeos. All of these types of entertainment are not natural for these animals which is a form of abuse. Often times they are wild animals that don’t belong in cages and are not able to do things that are in their instinct to do. This is especially true about zoos and circuses. Animals are not able to roam free and instead kept in small cages. Even in optimal settings experts say that it is difficult to provide for the needs of wild animals.(Lemonick) Children should learn to respect animals and not see them as entertainment. People should only support animal free circuses and raise awareness how animals are abused for entertainment.
The smell of cotton candy and popcorn in the air and screams of happy children filling your ears. You see elephants, tigers and a whole variety of exotic animals performing tricks to stun the audience. However, as the circus packs up for the next city, many people are blindsided to what happens behind the scenes. Some argue that circuses are fun and lighthearted. However, the sad truth is that the poor animals you just saw perform a magnificent show, are being held in a unjustful state of captivity. Circuses can cause damage to animals, being kept in cages can cause mental problems, and animals are forced to do their unusual activity. Therefore, circuses are not good.
What do you think of when you hear the term Animal Rights? According to Gary Francione he says “It means that there is no moral justification for any institutionalized animal exploitation. Many people believe that as long as a person cares about animals, that caring makes someone an advocate of animal “rights.” But that is no more the case than merely caring for women makes one a feminist” (Francione). People think that if you care about animals you believe in the rights but that is not always the case some people just have animals for certain reasons like fighting, testing, and a really big problem is breeding for money. People get mad when animals are running loose but it isn’t the animal’s fault it is the owner because the owner doesn’t want to keep the animal in a yard or inside the house. Animal rights should be looked into from people that want to adopt or buy an animal because they need to know what to do and how to protect the animal. Animal cruelty is an unfortunate part of society that includes testing many different products on them; luckily, there are organizations that are trying to help ease this problem.
“In the 19th century Van Amburgh, believing that the trainer must demonstrate physical superiority over his “pupils,” had customarily beat his animals into submission. Unfortunately, this practice was followed by many American successors” (“Circus”). In other words, people have been harming animals since the 19th century. Circuses are inhumane for animals. Circuses are bad because they don’t have the right environment and they force animals to do unnatural acts.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an organization who fights against animal cruelty. It informs people about the issues with animals. It also compares animal cruelty to drastic events such as slavery, the Holocaust, World War II, etc. It has a history of proving what is humane. The website excerpt titled "Circuses: Three Rings of Abuse" from the website peta.org is effective for its audience of animal rights people, people who go to the circus or support them and others who are concerned about the circus for the following reasons: usage of rhetorical and stylistic techniques, the use of pathos and getting information from former circus employees. However, it is unreasonable for the following reasons: it was unfair with involving
If someone was repeatedly hit, stabbed and whipped for the sake of entertainment, would we sit and watch? If someone was snatched from his family and home, for the sake of entertainment, would we promote it? If someone’s well being, happiness and health was ignored for the sake of entertainment, would we allow it? These are the conditions thousands of animals have to endure everyday. If they aren’t acceptable for humans, they aren’t acceptable for animals. While many may believe animals in entertainment attractions are well taken care of, they are abused daily and are forced to perform.
Animals should not have their rights taken away to be held in captivity just for people to find enjoyment. As animals they should be given a right not to be subjected to treatment as property or a source of income for humans (Stoddart 137).
They are put through strenuous activities and routines to be able to perform. If they are not doing as there are supposed to they are whipped, and abused until they perform to a certain standard. They undergo an immense amount of stress being caged up all day. They endure even more stress traveling from city to city in their cages. They were ripped from their homes or even born into the circus ring, and forced to perform and put on a show for money and people’s pleasure. This final line delivers the message of the advertisement: don’t participate in events that promote the abuse of animals for
Animal abuse is becoming more adamant in the world every day. Punishments received by offenders aren’t as deserving as what they should be. Laws on the abuse and neglect of animals should be stricter and contain more consequences. The current punishment standards do not seem to decrease any of the abuse. Animals are looked upon by some as peripheral beings. Animals aren’t objects; they have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, as much as a human should. There are very few who have the strength and decency to speak for animals. People need to be a voice and speak for the unspeakable- be the voice they wish they had, make the choice they wish they could. Animals are here for our companionship and happiness and should be treated with kindness.
Animals have been a main focus in circus performances around the world for many centuries; however, in recent history, there have been far more regulations put on the use of these creatures, stemming mainly from how they are treated by both their trainers and the circus as a whole. Whether it be on the federal or local and state-level, there has been a definite increase in the questionable legality of America’s circus industry due to the neglect and abuse of the participating animals, courts’ decisions highlighting the true importance of the issue. These rulings make one ask the question: What types of regulations could be put in place in all circuses to ensure that the animals involved are not abused in the process? In the end, many
What do you think of when you hear the word circus? A magical place full of swirling colors, performing animals, and creepy clowns? Or maybe you think of acrobats, elephants, and trapezes? Sure, everyone loves going to the circus. Everyone loves seeing animals dance around and jump through hoops, watching the clowns do death defying stunts, or even eating peanuts and popcorn. Hearing the crowd cheer, making memories with friends of loved ones. When we are growing up we are taken to the circus to feast our eyes on the so-called performance of a lifetime. Most people at some point in their lifetime have seen or heard of a performance put on by a circus. With all of these times spent admiring wonderful performances, it is difficult for millions of people to ever think that a circus could ever be a pernicious performance. It is hard for most people to think of any negative things come out of the so-called innocent circuses. All people see is the literal act put on not only by the human performers, but the circus animals as well.
Humans gather round to watch as animals perform dangerous tricks, not considering what the animals go through once the audience leaves. It is impossible for an animal’s need to be met in a traveling circus. “No matter how cheerful the advertising, no matter how bright and shiny the colorful tents and lights, there are really no animal-friendly circuses—except for those that don’t use animals.” (Allan, Carrie). Along with providing an unfit environment for animals, circuses continually poke and prod at animals. If animals do not perform as expected, they can be subject to beatings. According to dosomething.org, circus trainers may use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks and other painful tools as a means to discipline animals.
The reality is that animals are trained by fear, suffering and disrespect, are kept in tiny cages where they can barely move around and they travel most of their life time in severe temperatures which they are not used to in their natural habitat. I strongly believe that circuses which make animals perform should be banned.
Animals are treated like non-living things by some people. People seem to forget that animals are living beings and that humans are not that different from animals. Humans are classified as animals actually. In my opinion animals should be treated as living individuals, not just soulless robots as Descartes claims them to be. Of course this does not mean that we are supposed to get married with dogs or give them the right to vote. We just have to respect their dignity and stop behaving as if they were created to be our slaves.
The circus can be dated back to as far as 1782 in Paris, France where people came to enjoy family friendly entertainment. The circus has always included tricks and stunts by not only people but also highly trained animals. For decades now, people have considered the treatment of animal performances in the circus cruel and unjust. Protesters argue that animals are stripped from their native lands and forced to preform shows, meanwhile being treated harshly and abused by the human circus performers. Tigers, elephants, and other animals are trained and forced to entertain audiences by standing on their heads, jumping through hoops, and doing balance tricks. Spectators have considered this a spiteful treatment of animals, for it is often physically challenging and frightening to the animal performers. There have been reports of circus trainers abusing animal performers with whips, muzzles, and other painful tools.
