WILKS, J. j., CUTCHER, A. l., & WILKS, S. s. (2012). Digital Technology in the Visual Arts
Classroom: An [un]Easy Partnership. Studies In Art Education, 54(1), 54-65.
This peer-reviewed article from Studies In Art Education, a United Kingdom based academic journal that focuses on research on the nuances of art education and related issues, is written by Australian authors, Cutcher and Wilks, as a comparison of the positive effects of information and communication technologies (ICT) in visual arts classrooms with the struggles that art educators are facing when incorporating technology into their traditional art curriculum. Examples of this from the pair’s qualitative research through the use of existing published material include such positives as opportunities to produce and manipulate digital images, graphic design experience,

The article begins with the standard issues that many art teachers are facing when imposed with the task of technology integration: not enough time to learn, little technical support, and that technology problems can impede upon valuable instruction time. However, it then goes on to illustrate how the Internet is changing the world into a global community. Students now have more networking opportunities to share ideas with other artists and students than ever before. They are no longer isolated in classrooms, but can share experiences with people all over the world, which are providing opportunities for teachers and students to shape society together. It is proposed that art teachers and students are good catalysts for this shaping of a new global culture because, according to Delacruz, “Artmaking, inuiry, and interactive digital multimedia are naturally inclined toward eclectic, creative, collaborative, and adaptive
The history of digital art, which can be more broadly referred to as electronic art, is not only written whilst affected by the consolidation of the aesthetic and foundation that Stewart Brand claims for contemporary culture, but also in the very acceptance of digital art by the institutions and curators of the art world. It is a reality that digital art has remained in a transition for a considerable period of time and has yet to be established as a proper discipline.
Dana Mortenson uses her experience and knowledge to challenge educators to think outside their box, and begin to look towards the classrooms of the future. Mortenson is the co-founder and executive director of World Savvy and is considered to be an expert in the field of global education. In addition, Mortenson was quoted in saying, “I care passionately about preparing the next generation for responsible, engaged global citizenship in a world that is increasingly interconnected and interdependent.” The article focuses on two main themes. One is that the next generation classrooms will have a high capacity for using technology. Looking at today’s classrooms, it looks as if technology is already making its way into the classrooms. More
The collaborative creative work was a group performance for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) class. The performance explored notions and concepts of technology as a tool for art, which was a predominant component of the course over the semester. The intention of the group was to examine, analyse and discuss how technologies can alter multimodal texts and the effect and impact this has on the text's original form and audience. This essay will provide reflection and critique on the process, collaboration, group contribution and final performance, and whether or not what achieved what we set out. This paper will also examine issues, topics, structure and how we ended up with the idea of technology influencing the form media.
When I was in fourth grade, I had already become an avid Internet user. In between visits to a variety of video game websites, I stumbled upon a particular section of Youtube: the art category. The users would post sped up videos of them drawing wide eyed girls with exaggerated bangs in MSPaint and create ten second animations using Windows Movie Maker. Needless to say, I was hooked. While their art wasn’t revolutionary, still, I watched in awe. Even though I was aware of the talent of the greats like Da Vinci and Van Gogh, there was a certain disconnect between them and myself that didn’t inspire me at the time. However, young girls, like myself, building an audience through their art was something chimerical, and seemed just obtainable enough to inspire me to pursue art. So, I downloaded GIMP, Paint Tool Sai, Photoshop, and a myriad of other drawing programs and persisted to draw digitally, despite only using a measly mouse as my tool of choice.
based on an educational website designed to assist teachers in their classroom. In relation to ‘ digital pedagogy” (Howell, 2012, p.8) I clearly showed readiness to take part in my own use of technology in the formal classroom through my piktochart that’s based on Kahoot because I was able to navigate the infographic website . The significance of digital pedagogy is that it allows for teachers to further engage their students with technologies that they are familiar with .. I found that while working on the piktochart by using the number of ‘buttons’ and actions that were available to use, I was able to produce my work coherently. The most important aspect of
For our article review I chose the article Creating Meaningful Art Experiences With Assistive Technology for Students with Physical, Visual, Severe, and Multiple disabilities. One of the authors is Mary Beth Coleman who is an assistant professor in the special education department at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The other author is Elizabeth Stephanie Cramer who works as a clinical assistant professor and coordinator of art education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The article addresses the use of assistive technology in the art classroom and why it is necessary for students with disabilities. It is obvious upon reading the article that the authors thoroughly researched the subject which can be backed up by their references
In today’s modern world, there has been many debates on what should be considered art. Art and technology are connected because technology is a way to display art pieces and alter them. Art is what a person uses to express their feelings and what their point of view is on a certain topic. Technology is several types of equipment that are used to provide information and make life easier. Animation, photo editing, and actually taking technological devices to create sculptures are all examples of how technology and art are interrelated.
When children’s artwork is displayed in various places throughout the classroom it can also make other students interested in their peer’s artwork. With the world of technology documenting children’s artwork and various activities has never been easier. By being able to document children’s artwork it can give the parents or caregivers a sense of feeling connected to what their child does in the classroom. This can be good for parents who occasionally work out of town or that are in the military. Throughout the article, it listed different studies that have been done that prove the reasoning behind ways that each category is
This essay critically evaluates a Design and Technology (DT) lesson taught in a year one classroom at a 3 form entry Infant School in a large village in West Sussex. I have chosen this subject as I feel DT has a crucial role to play within the primary classroom and I am passionate about the impact it can have on children’s learning when it is taught effectively. Specialising in art at university has helped strengthen my belief in the importance of teaching creatively and how teaching a broad and balanced range of subjects can allow children to access different strengths that they may never have known existed. Throughout both placement experiences I have observed a very limited amount of DT teaching within the classroom, often seemingly
Mrs. Lee is beginning her first semester as a new high school English teacher. She created all of her lesson plans according to the traditional classroom standards. It’s the first day of school and students and the students are eager to learn. After several weeks, Mrs. Lee notices that her students weren’t interested in the lesson. Some of her students began to doze off in class and others stopped attending class.
In our modern day society, technology evolves and causes us to re-evaluate our understanding of art. This has been brought about by platforms such as Instagram, SoundCloud, VSCO, and YouTube – all of which reduce the barriers to entry for the publication of various art forms and provide a means for anyone to engage in the arts. This illustrates the concept of cultural democratization in which everyone is free to express their creativity, not just those who are especially skilled or trained or have the monetary means to do so. This expansive approach of bringing art to the masses has led to a
The advancement in technology is becoming a great benefit in the classroom. More students are learning to use their creative side, which is encouraging individual learning and growth. Through technology, students find it is easier for them to work together with others. The group members can join together over the internet and they don’t have to be in the same room. As there continues to be new improvements in the various types of technology, it is helping the student prepare for the real world.
The article is an analysis of the state of the new media art. The new media uses digital communication to express its artwork and Muir (2002) choses certain works as illustrative examples of their format. Their spectrum was so-called old, middle-aged and modern digital art that spanned the 19th century to the present moment.
Teachers are expected to use the internet to perform his or her job duties. Thus, curriculums are now design to enforce students’ ability to access technology inside classrooms. Educators and scholars benefit from usage of technology in numerous of methods. Unlike the earlier centuries we live in a digital world. Undoubtedly, primary schools are one of the most effective institutions for an individual in the process of acquiring and developing basic int ernet and computer skills (Bahar, et al., 2009). In addition, internet usage promotes fun and engaging learning opportunities, while instructing stimulating tasks for students. Entree to the internet in the classroom targets various levels of multiple intelligence and learning styles. For instance, the internet in classroom can be a helpful tool for English Language Learners by assisting
