This article discusses the notion of pain and suffering, known as ‘Han’, and how it is expressed in the Traditional Art form of P’ansori. The sentiment of ‘Han’ is explored in relation to the timbre, rhythm, melody and gestures that are associated with this genre. An acknowledged limitation, for an outsider compiling field research, is the study of the intangible notion of ‘Han’, which is tightly linked to Korean history and its culture.
