Announcement of the iPhone 4 Designed and marketed by Apple Inc, the iPhone 4 was announced on June 7, 2010 at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. Its preorder date was announced for June 15, 2010, however this was pushed back due to preorder issues. Hardware The iPhone 4 was marketed as the “thinnest smartphone in the world at the time”, due to its uninsulated stainless steel frame which provides a light structure and doubles as an externally placed antenna. Apple asserted the iPhone 4’s new “Retina Display”, claiming a higher resolution would not improve quality because it is already at maximum amount of detail. This increases performance and multi-tasking from the iPhone 3Gs. The iPhone 4 uses a Micro Sim card on Iphone 4s running on a GSM network. On CDMA network phones, the phone connects to the network using an ESN. As on all prior models, all data is stored in flash memory. Accessories The iPhone 4 comes with earphones, wall charger, and USB cord, as previous models did. Network Update The iPhone 4 was the first to be released in a version for CDMA networks, ending AT&T’s period as the exclusive carrier of iPhone products in the US. About 6 months after its release, Verizon Wireless announced that it too would begin selling a CDMA iPhone 4 in the US and that it would include a personal hotspot feature. User Problems Problems with this phone included yellow discoloration of the screen, attributed to the glue used underneath the glass lamination not fully drying before the phone was sold to users. This discoloration disappeared within a few days after purchase. The proximity sensor was another issue. During calls, contact of a user’s face with the screen would cause calls to be ended, muted, or random phone numbers to be dialed.
