Answer 1 As the name suggests, situational theory recommends that leaders change their style according to situation and temperament of the follower. There is something different about this theory. It doesn't only focus on the leader characteristics but also takes into account the characteristics of the one being led and that is why it is a better approach for Stephen than Bureaucratic approach used by the local authority. There are four maturity levels of the follower discussed in this approach which is basically why it works for managers. At the lowest level, a follower lacks skills and knowledge to work on his own and hence need to be told exactly what needs to be done. The maturity level increases from there and so does the level of influence that leader needs to exert. Example of lowest maturity level: new workers in an organization may fit this description. Example of highest maturity level: a person at this level would need a leadership who adopts the delegating style. An expert graphic designer may know exactly what needs to be done but is still bound by the parameters set by the leader for his task. ALTERNATIVE LEADERSHIP An alternative leadership style for Stephen would be transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is where a leader not only leads the followers to complete a task successfully but also brings positive changes in the followers.
