Question 1 1a. The primary strategic objective as outlined in the Directive for Commander-in-Chief Allied Expeditionary Force is to cut off the Axis supplies to Africa by means of the Mediterranean ports. The ports currently under Axis control include Algiers, Oran, Tunis, Bone, Philippville and Casablanca. These ports are currently held by French troops, who although under Axis control are considered friendly to the Allies. The secondary strategic objective as outlined in the Directive for Commander-in-Chief Allied Expeditionary Force is to put an end to the Gazala Gallop enabling Allied troops to enter Europe through Africa. This secondary strategic goal can only happen once the Axis supplies are cut off through the ports preventing yet another advance by the Axis African troops. 1b. The planners outlined a four day direct assault and a 25 day follow-up assault to take the ports. These operational objectives involve army, navy and air support, each will be outlined below. Army: The army will be in charge of all initial ground assaults. On the first day there will be simultaneous attacks of Algiers, Oran, Bone and Philippville. Algiers and Oran will be attacked with full American troops. Bone and Philippville will be attacked by primarily British forces with some backup coming from American forces.
