Freedom of thought is the ability to freely express oneself from independent of others’ viewpoint. In Anthem the society finds that the freedom to express one’s thought is not acceptable. The society in Anthem is called collectivism, it has gained complete control of the society and freedom to express oneself no longer exist. Individuals are not allowed to do anything without the consent from society. The main character of Anthem, Equality 7-2521 explains the society he lives in, new ideas are not welcome because they bring in human expression and individuality. Equality 7-2521 said early in the book," It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down on paper no others are allowed to see...There is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone." (Rand 17). The theme of freedom to think from Anthem is similar to Inherit The Wind, for the reason of fighting for the ability to think. For Anthem it is a sin for an individual, such as Equality 7-2525 to have freedom of thought and convey one’s identity (individuality).
The quote in the paragraph above begins Anthem by Equality 7-2521 explaining he is did something wrong. He describes the law from collectivism and how the world that he lives in tightly controlled. The law hinders people from doing what they want to do, say, or think. In the quote Equality 7-2521 repeats the word “sin” twice to emphasize the fact that the actions he is performing is a sin against the society in which
Ayn Rand’s “Anthem” illustrates a series of ironic connections between great successors of Greek mythology and to her two main characters. The main characters, Equality 7-2521 and Liberty5-300, both contain very interesting and unique personalities, which makes them incompatible with their collectivism society due to who they are and what they believe. Ayn Rand disperses random clues throughout the book that provide evidence and reasoning of why she chose to rename her characters after two significant creator figures in Greek mythology. So, why did Ayn Rand chose the names? How does it explain her philosophy?
Life has fared well since Gaea and I have lived in this house. There are now others in houses surrounding us. These are my friends that I returned to rescue, International 4-8818 being one of them. He is now called Apollo. We are happy here, all of us. The others are learning, albeit rather slowly, yet they learn to say I instead of we. It is my hope that, before my first child is born, they will all say I so that he or she may only know this and not the cursed we.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.
This novel displays exactly what Ayn Rand’s theory of Objectivism does not support in order to expose the weaknesses of her opponents ways and express the importance of self improvement. She puts forth for the reader the faults of a collective minded society as the leaders and society within Anthem attempt to control mans body and mind. Towards the close of the novel, as Equality 7-2521 discovers the sacred word he also comes to understand the perks of self improvement and striving to advance as an individual. The leaders and society attempt to accomplish the tyrannical end to their dictatorship through their control of mans body and mind by hiding the past and maintaining a collective
“It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil… We have broken the laws” (17). Thus begins Anthem by Ayn Rand, a novella about a future collectivist society and a man named Equality 7-2521. Though the story takes place in the future, all technology that came after candles and glass has been taken away. The word “I” has ceased to exist in anyone’s vocabulary. Every person must agree on everything and feel like everyone else. To accomplish ‘cleansing’ the evils of mankind, society lead its people to believe that nothing can be done independently. The story is told through the eyes of Equality as he purposely defies the laws
The story of Anthem takes place in dystopian future in which freedom and human rights have been obliterated. Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, is a street sweeper who finds a tunnel where he conducts his science experiments which are considered a sin. Throughout the book we see him change and discover how capable he is through a multitude of literary devices. In the novella , Anthem, Ayn Rand utilizes vivid imagery and a profusion of diction to frenetically emphasize the idea of love.
In the story Anthem, members of the society are not allowed to do anything for themselves. Everything in their entire live is told to them by a council that has been told to do that by someone else. Nobody has complete control in the world, because everyone's job was told for them to by somebody else. The freedom of speech is blatantly absent from the story and after reading it, one could tell why it is so obvious yet so hard to see at the same time. The story tends to have the mention of the freedom of speech absent. It focuses more on things like, the freedom of preference, or the freedom to write.
Ayn Rand's novella, Anthem, displays a dystopian and totalitarian society that is in opposition to individualism. As shown in Anthem and many other real and fictionalized totalitarian societies, children live apart from their families. Why? Because dictatorial leaders enforce this living arrangement among the kinsfolk.
As one reads Ayn Rand’s significant quotes from the story of anthem, there is always a main theme that is trying to escape, just as Prometheus escaped in her story. All three of the listed quotes work as a trio to sing that We; as society, works to defeat individuality. The quotes emphasize that we cannot survive without individualism and being alone brings out our unique personalities. It is true that all the quotes work as one, but at the same time they have their own individualism. Each quote holds a purpose of its own and the author wants to express the quote to each persons understanding.
Equality Should Keep the Old Society’s Rules In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, the protagonist Equality escapes his brutal, collectivistic society to build his own. Equality wants to build an utopian society rather than his old dystopian society. In the old society in Anthem the Council of the Scholars are the government and they establish the rules.
No “I” and no “you”, just “we.” How could we live in a world like that? Ayn Rand’s book shows a twisted and different form of collectivism. Everyone is told what they have to do for the rest of their future. Children are not even allowed to know who their parents are and are never given the chance to meet them. Although, only one shines in the society that no one else may see until now. Equality finds it difficult to find individualism in his life and in the rules of his society. Equality eventually finds individualism in escaping, to a haven of his own, from his odd society. Equality can then find peace with himself and can live in a more individualistic life in his newfound house with “The Golden One” in the forbidden and
To begin, Equality 7-2521’s actions develop the theme that individualism is not a sin. He does this in multiple ways. However, most of the characters in Anthem believe that individualism is a sin. That is why Equality 7-2521’s actions are significant to the development of the theme. In the beginning
Overall, in my opinion, my Anthem essay showed my creative side when it comes to writing. It also showed some risk taking as I wrote in a style that I’ve never written before, I attempted to sound “passionate” rather than “passive” through new and complex vocabulary. Despite it being my first essay of the year, I felt it was still an excellent essay, however, I’ve noticed flaws such as not explaining my quotations and claim very well, and some minor grammar and wordiness issues. Compared to my freshmen essays, my Anthem essay definitely showed substantial growth. It was not my best work, though, I struggled a great deal in trying to explain how my textual evidence related to my thesis.
In life, you are born into societies where various ideas or things are thought to be normal and the customs are already established. The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand has many themes, but what I believe the theme of the novel is, to think for yourself. To think for yourself means to make your own decisions and opinions, without depending on other people. I also think that if you are going to think for yourself you can’t worry about what other people will think of what you believe in. Whether you believe that you should only have school a few days a week or you believe in a certain god, no person should feel ashamed for what they believe in. In today’s society and in the society of Anthem, people don’t think for themselves and they just follow people blindly. In the media, today we see what celebrities are saying, who they like, who they dislike, what they use, what they endorse, and we follow them because we want to be like them. Sometimes you don’t realize that you’re not thinking for yourself, but not being able to think for yourself can make you miserable and that is what Equality 7-2521 realized in Anthem.
Anthem’s previous strategy, which focused on cost leadership, was supported by numerous factors including their high brand recognition through the Blue Cross Blue Shield network. However, because of the post ACA environment and novel payment models, the company is shifting towards a differentiation strategy. Their new strategy focuses on the following objectives: (Anthem website)
