Given that public officials are not only promised in preventing wrong, but they are also tasked with pursuing and practicing what is right and taking in consideration that conscience performs a critical role in choosing correct actions, including the ambiguities of life; I strongly believe that, the actions of Anthony Weiner affected his candidacy for New York City mayor in 2013. Moreover, some New Yorkers gave Weiner a second chance and he was able to rally supporters to assist with his campaign, however, when the sexting scandal came into light his campaign was disrupted and ended with an absolute defeat. In the documentary presented in class, I was shocked by his lack of interpersonal sensitivity because this wasn’t the first time that he
A strong point in Jim DeMint’s argument was, that the larger the government the gets the larger the national debt increases. A weak point in his argument was that “Almost everything our federal government attempts to do becomes a disaster”. It is very ironic for a person who served in the federal government to say it's terrible, it is also a very vague statement. I disagree with Jim DeMint for multiple reasons. The first being that he says that the government should stop spending but, then goes on to say we should spend more money on an already large military. Also he says that the government is using global warming as an excuse to expand its power but, there are many people (especially environmentalists) that would argue that it is not doing
On June 6th 2015, Lee Siegel wrote an op-ed piece titled "Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans" which should cause one to wonder how the New York Times allowed such an irresponsible article to be published. Siegel encourages impressionable young students to take loans with the intent of defaulting. He gives advice, based off of a "moral" argument, to accumulate large debts and effectively steal from the government in order to pursue your dreams. Since when did pursuing one's dreams validate committing crimes? Siegel attempts to validate his irresponsible behavior through these types of faulty arguments.
Peter Singer present the argument “They’re here, they are selling stuff at incredible prices, thousands of dollars for a dress or a handbag or whatever it might be. And at the same time, of course, we are living in world in which there are about a billion people who are struggling to survive on less than on U.S. dollar per day. With some more aid from the developed world, untold deaths could be prevented”p.61-62 (Taylor, 2009) in his opening statement to Astra Taylor while strolling down 5th Ave in New York City. This statement sets the tone for his discussion on ethics in the Western World and how he believes ethic and morality go hand in hand and establishes the rhetorical situation that will be repeated throughout the interview. This idea
When conducting the focus group we received majority of feed back on ways to make the message more clear and express a deeper meaning to our viewers. The criticism we received concerned voiceovers covering some of the still pictures we used and ways to critique our message to use stronger wording and better integrate our slogan. Our final edits, after adding in the comments we received in our focus groups, are ones that will convey a clear and concise message to our constituency.
I believe that through his analogies of the misuse of body parts, counter arguments and his response to them, as well as the logical implications, Michael Levin poses a strong case that homosexuality is abnormal. With that said, the purpose of this paper is to analyze Levin’s argument, to do that I will address the parts previously mentioned, analogies, a counter argument, and logical implications.
Evaluating arguments for logical consistencies was proven through my oral presentation on El Chapo along with the research paper. Encouraged to analyze the arguments, I was able to pin point the consistencies the media was portraying to the public. I also had the chance to listen and analyze two of my fellow peers’ oral presentation on the current issues regarding the confederate flag and the argument on whether or not to keep it. Evaluating key points on the history of the flag, we were able to evaluate the fallacies behind the flag. Consistencies were identified in El Chapo’s current issue with news channels like CNN, Vice News, and Fox using similar headlines describing his escape. “El Chapo’s Escape”, “mile-long tunnel dug” “escape from
In his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Elie Wiesel said civilized people must “take sides” and “interfere” without regard to “national borders and sensitivities” whenever and wherever other human beings are suffering. Should humans throw themselves into unknown situations to help those less fortunate than themselves? This question, proposed by Wiesel’s comment, has been a highly debated topic and will continue to be. One can see this issue as a lack of kindness or as a lack of self-preservation. Some believe those who will not help the less fortunate have no kindness or passion for those lower than themselves.
Also, Rosen talks to the authority figures surrounding the sexting scandal in Virginia, giving her logos. She emphasizes the importance of authority educating the public on how to handle situations like these. She found that the biggest issue for the police officers is the punishment for sexting, especially those involving minors, rather than adults. Rosin explains that in some
From my perspective, it seems that the writer is instead of using the article as evidence; she is trying to tear the argument apart. If she is using the source as evidence to her point, then she does not state her side about the topic at the end. This way she stays neutral. However, seeing how she is using evidence from one source, it seems that she is trying to argue with Bruce Schneier. This way she stays neutral.
In the world we live in today, bad news spreads faster than ever. In the days of JFK he could do whatever he wanted without it being reported, today’s media will air your dirty laundry as quickly as possible. When I have pondered the fall of so many people, especially in the church, I have always felt the sin did not just appear, but rather it was something under the surface for many years. The authors really opened my eyes when they pointed out how childhood issues, many of which usually drive one to be a success, can become the root cause for a potential moral failure. Moral failures do not just creep up on a leader, the roots for the possibly upcoming failure run deep within our psyche (McIntosh & Rima, 2007, p. 28).

Morici believes that government funding needs to be retracted from students attending universities and instead placed into vocational education. He believes for technology and competition to grow in a way which is more beneficial to our failing economy, more trained workers need to be in the work force. His argument is that if the middle class are suffering, they are not those with advanced degrees. If universities keeps creating graduates with advanced degrees, those jobs will become scarce and many will be left in debt and without work.
Smith, you must promote ethical behavior based on the unified ethic system. You must first seek to understand the unified ethic system and then provide training for all employees regarding the system. This will enable them to learn that the unified ethic allows one moral structure to be applied across all situations encountered in either the private or public sector. Your experience gained from the private sector will aid you in understanding and relating the compatibility of private and public morality under this system. This is important to note as you transition to public service. Geuras and Garofalo (2011) state, “...one morality is applicable in both public and private affairs. The apparent difference is not in the moral systems, but in the additional factors that a public official must consider by virtue of the responsibilities of public service” (p. 241). Application of one moral system will be key in unifying the ethical decision making process within the city’s
An ethical leader demonstrates, not by the words spoken, but by the actions used to defending ethical standards. Placing the people before all matters, moreover leading an example for others to follow, Mario Cuomo fits the position well. Governor of New York and presidential might-have-been Cuomo's political career enlightens on the problematic conditions people face with everyday. Moreover, his communication skills, refusal to compromise, putting others first signifies his role as an ethical leader.
