Anthropology Degree

Anthropology is a word derived from the Greek words anthropos and logia. The word anthropos means human, and the word logia, in basic terms, means the study of. Therefore an anthropologist is a person who studies humans. Anthropologists study humans to gain and spread knowledge for the greater good of humanity, so we as a people can understand one another. To study anthropology as an anthropologist involves extensive research. Furthermore, to gather any credible research a person must follow a set guideline, especially when using and gathering research from another person. This guideline is in place to protect one's personal freedom because many cases involving human research have been unethical, unmoral, and unjust.

In Anthropology, as the word implies, you see the physical, social, material, and cultural developments of human beings who have risen above their "place," after having been born black in the South.

Anthropology is the study of society and cultures, when used by historians it can allow that historical narratives to grow. Historians can use anthropology to better explore cultural and social trends as well as deeply explore a certain community in great detail, exploring certain events that may be unique to that community along with its myths and folklore or is the community a part of a larger trend.

Dr. Lind believes that being an applied anthropologist requires a number of varying skills. Most importantly on his list is being flexible, he says that it is important to be flexible when working with different populations, teams, and conducting research. Dr. Lind stated, “You will rarely work alone as an Anthropologist, research requires the expertise of multiple people”. He also emphasized trusting your knowledge and no being scared to speak up in your area of expertise. Another important skill that Dr. Lind told me was of importance is knowing what different research methods will get you the results you want and to have a strong background in varying anthropological and methodological research methods.

Another way that sociology would better my career would be by analyzing behaviors of criminals and patterns that they leave behind on the victims. With certain crimes you will be able to identify the criminals upbringing by their immoral actions. You’ll be able to identify the perpetrator by the basics you learn in Soc 101. Sociology gives you the tools to look outside the box and to look further into examining people. Analyzing is going to be a key element in pathology because i would have to examine bodies and analyze all the information in order to determine the cause of death.

Anthropology refers to the study of humanity. Anthropologists do not discriminate against culture, gender or race but study all societies and are concerned with the totality of human existence. Ethnography is often seen as the hallmark of anthropology and it consists of fieldwork, which is used to acquire the information and insights needed to understand different societies ways of life. Fieldwork entails going to live with or close to the people being studied in order to gain firsthand experience about their lives and the problems they have to deal with.

Though Anthropology is the study of humanity, early anthropologists only focused on men during their ethnographic research of various cultures, leaving out women and children. Anthropology has adapted allowing modern anthropologists to focus on all members of society. Considering men were the focus of the discipline for so long, you would not expect there to be a gap in such a fundamental aspect of human evolution, men as fathers.

Anthropology is the study of humanity. Being an anthropologist is not just about digging up artifacts and studying other people. It becomes more when one takes that information and puts it to good use. However, how this knowledge is used is be up to the anthropologist and results in the occupation being very broad with many different opportunities. During my research, I discovered the basics about the career, how students can prepare for it, the advantages, and the disadvantages of being an anthropologist.

Taking up History and Sociology has improved my writing and argumentative skills especially being diplomatic in my writings, considering both sides to an argument and be critical- minded to voice out criticisms and theories that I uphold. Studying Geography was very fulfilling and enriching, I have obtained a substantial understanding on the global trends and policies initiated by concerned parties such as government, NGOs and international organisations. I was particularly fond with the human core topics, for instance, Migration, Urbanisation, Population, Settlement, Tourism and Energy.
