Anti-Semitic Propaganda

Propaganda is hard to define as most definitions do not cover the full meaning of the word. The Webster's Illustrated Encyclopedic Dictionary defines propaganda as " the systematic propagation or discrediting of a given doctrine or cause by circulation of polemical material, such as posters and leaflets" (1353). However, this definition does not cover the full scope of the of the word. Terence Qualter also feels the definition for propaganda needs to be more refined for its new usage. The definition that he gives is "the deliberate attempt...(to) form, control, or alter the attitudes of other groups...(with) the use of the instruments of communication" (27-28). He goes on to say that the propaganda must be aimed at the group in general because that is the basic nature of the word, in that the most effective propaganda is the propaganda which has a large audience. Qualter does mention, however, that there need be no difference in the propaganda to persuade one and the propaganda to persuade the many (28). Germany did this by controlling the flow of information into the country.

Propaganda is the use of techniques to easily sway or mislead individuals. It is campaigning and convincing people with what is trying to be advertised. The word propaganda came into use in 1914 during the end of WWl but the use of propaganda actually started a very long time ago, but the term propaganda wasn’t used, there was no name for it. Propaganda is a language of power by spreading false information, shaping society’s opinion, and being able to control people.

Propaganda, according to The American Heritage Dictionary, is "the dissemination of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those people advocating such a doctrine or cause." The book fits this definition by attempting to

The German Nazi dictator utilized his power over the people using propaganda, eventually creating a sense of hatred towards Jews. After World War 1, the punishments of the League of Nations caused Germany to suffer. The Nazi party came to blame the Jews in order to have a nation-wide “scapegoat”. This hatred and prejudice towards Jews is known as anti-semitism. According to the Breman Museum, “the Nazi Party was one of the first political movements to take full advantage of mass communications technologies: radio, recorded sound, film, and the printed

The Oxford Dictionary of English defines propaganda as “information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.” (Propaganda, 2017)

From 1930 to 1945 German theater and film held anti-semitic values depicting the Jewish populus as the leading cause of previous wars. Throughout this time movies such as Der ewige Jude and Jude Suß had large influence on the German people of both the war effort and the deportation of the so called undesirables, who led the country to the loss of the first world war.

During World War II, anti-Semitic publications circulating throughout Germany display clear evidence of pervading the minds of young German children. Julius Steicher, editor of Der Stumer and the agent responsible for many of the anti-Semitic publications (Mills), helped dramatically initiate the German resistance toward Jews early on in a child’s life. It is important to understand the severity of anti-Semitism taught to the future Nazi generation in order to maintain the National Socialist state and further it’s agenda. By examining the ideas, and publications aimed towards children that express those ideals, it is clear that the National Socialist state wanted to indoctrinate a hateful, militant agenda into young children. Ultimately, the final result was to maintain the prejudice view that the Jewish people were the inferior race, and therefore the enemy for future generations.

Oxford Dictionary of English defines propaganda as “information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.” OK, so far so good, I can agree with that.

As said by Joseph Goebbels, “Because this, my dear Harlan, is a perfect opportunity to show, that all Jewish characters and temperaments are originally from the same source.” He’s referring to Werner Krauss, whom had the idea to play all the background Jewish characters in the movie, Jud Süß. This 1940 film is an extremely anti-Semitic piece of propaganda from the Nazi Regime. How exactly did this particular piece of propaganda come to be and how did it help further and contribute to the goals of Nazi Germany? Propaganda’s job is to give its audience certain ideas and to train them to think in a certain way. It can be used as a way to dehumanize or show how horrible the subject of their hatred is, and during war this is often the case. With

Propaganda was another reason why Nazi support grew. Dr Joseph Goebbels was the minister for Enlightenment and propaganda. Goebbels was a very clever man and knew how to gain support; he was also very loyal to Hitler. He used every resource available to him to make people loyal to Hitler and the Nazis. Goebbels organized huge rallies. The rallies brought some colour and excitement to people’s lives. They gave them a sense of belonging to a great movement. The rallies also showed the German people the power of the state and convinced them that “every other German” supported the Nazis. The Nazis used every trick in the book to get their message home. The Nazis knew that their anti-communist stance was very popular and their propaganda further whipped up fear and hatred of the communists. First, one must define propaganda and since many have done so already, I shall use the Sheryl Ross model. Her model defines propaganda as “an epistemically defective message designed with the intention to persuade a socially significant group of people on behalf of a political institution, organization, or cause.”

The Nazis used propaganda to a great extent in Germany. It was impossible to escape and millions of ordinary Germans came across Propaganda every day. Not all the propaganda in Nazi Germany was successful but I believe that overall propaganda was massively successful in gaining Hitler and the Nazis support and influencing Germans with Nazi ideas and attitudes. By dominating all aspects of society many Germans were well informed about the policies of the Nazis and the success of the propaganda used made Hitler extremely popular amongst Germans.

The Jews in foreign lands began to dream of a new nation that would become a safe haven for all the Jews in the world. The sentiment was created partly due to the fact that the anti-Semitic movement was on the rise in parts of Europe and Asia and the Jews had begun to feel the brunt of it. The sentiment grew to become the Zionist movement. The sole aim of the Zionist movement was the setup of the Jewish state of Israel in the trans-Jordan region.

The media is a very powerful thing, Hitler understood this. Hitlers goal was to swindle the german people into war but how could he influence an entire nation into war? So hitler enlisted Joseph Goebbels(sometimes called the little doctor) as the head of propaganda for the nazi party. Goebbels was a very intelligent man with a Doctor in Philosophy from the University of Heidelberg. When Goebbels went to publish his papers for the scientific community he was rejected by several journals (including jewish ones) this made Goebbels hate the jews. Goebbels knew how to win the people so thats why he made his party(Nationalists) march through communist areas knowing that the people there would pelt them with trash and rocks. He did this to symbolize that his party was the more heroic one
