After this battle Eteocles received a proper burial while Polynices was left in the desert to rot in sun and be eaten by animals. Antigone believed that in order for the soul to rest the body must be buried properly. Creon decreed that Polynices must never be buried as he was a betrayer of his country, Thebes. Antigone was defiant against Creon’s declaration and was thrown in a dungeon to starve to death as punishment. Antigone’s husband Haimon, who was also Creon’s son, went to check on her in the dungeon and when the guards went to check on Antigone they found both of them lying having committed suicide. Antigone takes place just after a war between Antigone’s two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices. Eteocles fought on the side of Thebes whereas Polynices resembled an invader. Afterwards, Eteocles is buried and seen as honorable. However, Polynices is denied a proper burial because he is considered a traitor to Thebes. In this play, Sophocles uses Antigone and Creon as foils by characterizing Antigone as a martyr and Creon as a tyrant to urge the reader to realize that one’s own morals are more significant than the decrees of any government.

In the play Antigone, a girl named Antigone buried her brother, Polynices, which was a very controversial event that happened in Thebes, Greece. Polynices was considered a traitor for committing treason against his own city. Creon, the king of Thebes, declared Polynices didn’t deserve the right to be buried because of his treason. Even though Antigone knew it was a religious crime that Creon wouldn’t take lightly, she still decided to bury her brother in honor of him. Creon, in response, sentenced her to death.
Antigone and Creon are two characters that may be considered too similar in personalities, which causes some commotion. Both are confident and persistent in their beliefs and will do what they believe is best in their mind. Antigone is guilty in the eyes of the law because she buried her brother, Polynices, a traitor to Thebes, against Creon’s ruling. Creon has banned Polynices’ burial because he fought for power against Thebes and his own brother, Eteocles, who also died in the battle. Eteocles was granted a proper burial for dying in the name of Thebes, but Polynices was not. Antigone is worried about his burial rights because it is her job as a woman in the family to make sure that her brother is buried so he can get to the afterlife
In the play Antigone by Sophocles, Creon the king is presented as a tragic hero due to his aggressive, powerful, and ruthless actions. Creon's tragic fall lies in his actions, which lead him to make some malicious decisions. Even with his intended purpose to maintain law and order in his kingdom, he fails to recognize the consequences of his actions and eventually faces a tragic downfall through his actions and character traits: ruthlessness, powerfulness, and aggressiveness. These traits Creon represents are the elements of a tragic hero. To start, Creon is a tragic hero because of his ruthlessness.
Antigone versus Creon In the play Antigone, the character Antigone serves as a foil character for Creon in an attempt to show Creon the wrong in his judgement. The play is based around the belief of right by burial which Creon so happens to be denying a certain man of that right, Polynices, one of Antigone's brothers. Antigone serves a foil for Creon through most of her actions throughout the play. She buries her brother not once but twice, she argues with Creon over the right by burial belief, and Creon has a chain reaction of loss that was caused by Antigone’s death.
Creon says “Eteocles who died as a man is to be buried with full military honors, his brother Polynecies is to have no burial, no man is to touch or say a prayer for him. He shall lie on the plain unburied so the birds and dogs can do as they want. ”His niece (sister of both the brothers) decides he should be buried and Creon can kill her if he needed, she did not care. Creon decided to put her in a hole to starve to death for breaking his law. So it makes Creon the tragic hero because he was too late to save Antigone, she hanged herself, his son found out so he stabbed himself, and Creon’s wife found out about the son so, she also killed herself. Just to think he could’ve saved everyone he loved.
Antigone is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles. It is possibly one of the greatest tragedies ever written. Most people believe that the tragic hero of the play is Antigone, but the true tragic hero is Creon. Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero is that they must have hamartia, peripeteia, anagnorisis, and hubris. Creon exhibits all of this qualities in this story. According to Wiinington-Ingram ,”Creon has spoken proud words; Creon has suffered great blows; Creon has learnt, too late, that he lacked wisdom. “ (Wiington-Ingram) .Creon is a true tragic hero because he is a good ruler who has a flaw, who’s life is ruined by the flaw, and then he realizes his downfall is caused by his own actions.
Antigone is a tragic play written by Sophocles in about 441b.c. The play is a continuation of the curse put upon the household of Oedipus Rex. Sophocles actually wrote this play before he wrote Oedipus, but it follows Oedipus in chronological order. The story of Antigone begins after the departure of Oedipus, the king of Thebes, into self-exile. Oedipus’ two sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, were left to rule over Thebes. An argument over rights to power forces Polynices to leave Thebes. Some time passes and Polynices returns with the army from Argos and attempts to overthrow his brother. The two brothers fight and kill one another and the war ends. Creon, the uncle of the two
The tragic hero of a story has to have his/her tragic flaw. Creon and Antigone both shared the beliefs of freedom and the protection of personal dignity; those must be their tragic flaws. Creon believed that if he made a direct command he would carry it out all the way and not bend the rules for anyone. That shows how stubborn he was and how heartless and vile he was. Those are the traits of his tragic flaw. Antigone believed that everyone has their equal rights no matter whom they are fighting for, especially if they are part of her family. She would be stubborn and would not bend her ideals for anyone like Creon. She would go as far as it would take for her to get her point across. A tragic hero must realize that he/she has a tragic flaw and must then try to change themselves.
In the play Creon rejects the burial of Polyneices but still seems to value family heavily. When Creon speaks with Haemon he expresses that he should listen to his father’s choice over anything else “Stand by your father’s ideas in all things.” (Page 37), showing that Creon values family honor. Sophocles shows moments of family love throughout the play, Creon knows letting Antigone go after burying her brother is the right thing to do so he makes the decision to let her go free for the action she performed “I myself, since my judgement has turned and seen better ways, I bound her up and I will go and release her.” (Page 54), this shows that Creon truly loves Antigone and chose family over authority by freeing her. As Haemon finds out Antigone has hanged herself, in
The opening events of the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, quickly establish the central conflict between Antigone and Creon. Creon has decreed that the traitor Polynices, who tried to burn down the temple of gods in Thebes, must not be given proper burial. Antigone is the only one who will speak against this decree and insists on the sacredness of family and a symbolic burial for her brother. Whereas Antigone sees no validity in a law that disregards the duty family members owe one another, Creon's point of view is exactly opposite. He has no use for anyone who places private ties above the common good, as he proclaims firmly to the Chorus and the audience as he revels in his victory over Polynices. He sees Polynices as an enemy to

Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus, the king that married his own mother, Locaste and unwittingly killed his father, Laios. When he learned what he had done, he blinded himself and left Thebes, voluntarily went into self-style exile and died over there. Antigone and Ismene are siblings, the only surviving children of Oedipus. The other two brothers Polyneices and Eteocles quarreled and killed each other in a battle when Polyneices returned to assault Thebes, then Creon, Antigone uncle became the king of Thebes being the only heir in line to the throne. Creon ordered Polyneices be left to rot unburied on the battle field as a traitor but Antigone could not see reason to let her brothers body rot unburied. Antigone
