Conscience vs. Society Conscience vs. Society, would society get in the way of making your ethical decision? Or will you follow your heart and choose what is morally right? I think you should choose your conscience and follow your heart, whether or not it’s what society says is right. In this play Antigone, written by Sophocles, the characters face these befuddling questions. Antigone, Oedipus’s daughter, and her uncle Creon face these decisions for the burial of Antigone's brother, Polynices.

Antigone and her sister, Ismene are facing a difficult barrier. Creon who is now the king after Oedipus’s exile, forbade Antigone and Ismene's brother Polyneices to have a proper burial because he was a traitor to Thebes. Hearing this news Creon puts Antigone away , he does not want her death on his hands so he locks her away. Antigone commits suicide while being locked away, Haemon, Antigone’s lover commits suicide as well because of his unbarring father and the death of Antigone. Eurydice, Creon’s wife, so depressed and sad because of her son’s death kills herself. Now Creon is left with no one, his son and wife are dead because of his wrong doings. Creon’s choices throughout this play has greatly affected the people he loves. He is left with no family to share his kingdom with, Creon realizes his mistakes he has made and regrets it
