The poem “anyone lived in a pretty how town” by E.E. Cummings talks about the cycle of life and the importance of structure, symbolism, and language of the poem. For instance, the poem has nine stanzas, which has a rhyming pattern of AABC. The rhythm of the poem is significant for it supports one of themes, the cycle of life. Cumming uses season to explain the poem's progress. “spring summer autumn winter” (3) and “sun moon stars rain” (8) symbolizes time passing, which represents life passing. In the poem, as the seasons and skies rotate, life continues along with them. In addition, the uses of the words “snow” (22), “buried” (27), “was by was” (28), and “day by day” (29) leading to death. The plot of "anyone lived in a pretty how town" is simple, but it is the choices of language that makes this poem complex. The story begins with "anyone," which can be considered as a specific person. Anyone is a guy who the "Women and men," or the "someones" and "everyones," of the town don't care about, because he is different than they are. Although, the children of the town can see the love of "Anyone" and "Noone," but even they begin to dislike the difference of Anyone as "down they forgot as up they grew." (10) Anyone and Noone soon later are buried side by side, while the people carry on living their lives, learning nothing from Anyone and Noone. Cumming uses his own grammar to describe the relationship of Anyone and Noone. Anyone is not just “anyone” so using “anyone's any was all to her” (16) shows the appreciation for Anyone's individuality. Because of Anyone's “any”, this confronts the “someones” (17) or “everyones” (17) making Anyone unique. The poem reveals the love that Anyone and Noone shares. This love they have, “everyones” does not have. When Anyone “sang his didn't and danced his did” (4) and Noone “laughed his joy and cried his grief” (14), gave differences of when “someones” and “everyones” “laughed their cryings and did their dance” (18).
