According to our biology book, “there are several elements (water, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus) that cycle through our world just like energy is cycled. These elements are never created or destroyed, but instead they are constantly recycled and reused.” Various human activities can hamper/benefit these cycles. Two of the cycles and how they are benefited and adversely affected by human activities are explained below.
For my AP biology summer assignment, I chose to do “Decaying Foods”. In my project, I used a slice of whole wheat bread and an apple slice. Throughout the fourteen days, I made observations on the plates every two hours beginning at 10:45 AM. On Day One, Plate A was in the refrigerator, Plate B was in the closet, and Plate C was on the windowsill, all starting out fresh. As the day progressed, objects on Plate A remained in their natural state, on Plate B the crusts of the bread became hard, and the apple slice was brown and dried out , and the apple slice had become hard and the bread felt toasted on Plate C. On Day Two, Plate A remained the same, Plate B had hard bread and the apple slice was wilting in the core and Plate C’s bread was cracking
My AP Biology class is what started my desire to pursue biochemistry. In fact, it was a specific experiment. We infused jellyfish DNA into yeast plasmid and when we turned off the lights the Petri disks in everybody's hands glowed. It was mind-boggling to see that the blueprints to life could be manipulated and translated to completely different species.
Ms. Erlij, my AP Biology teacher, never lets “no” stop her from dreaming. Back in the fall of 2015, she had this idea of creating an AP Biology class for the science department at Millennium High School, which never had AP courses before. Despite numerous disapprovals, she was still determined to make a change, and she did. I want to be as determined as Ms. Erlij, someone who is willing to take risks for their creative vision despite boundaries. As the president of Cooking Club, I have been trying to promote a waste-free club in which everything is either recyclable, reusable or edible. I grew my own avocado tree from the avocado seeds of the Guac and Chip event to inspire my fellow members to go green. Despite my efforts, many members

1. A person who is taking an antibiotic for a long time suffers because the antibiotic will kill off not only the “bad” bacteria in the large intestines but also the “good” bacteria. According to our textbook, the bacteria in the large intestine produces vitamin K. The liver produces prothrombin with the help of vitamin K which allows for clotting. If there is little to no vitamin K, the liver struggles to produce prothrombin, which in turn will cause a person to bleed when they blow their nose because of breaking blood vessels in the nasal
I think that one thing that attracted me to biochemistry was how essential it is to the growth and prosperity of human life. I chose to go into the field of biochemistry to further my education regarding medicine. Pharmacy is something that I have been interested in since I was a little girl, I knew that whatever career path I went into I wanted to help people. My dad encouraged me to attend a camp during the summer where I met with engineers, pharmacists and other doctors; and ever since then pharmacy has stuck with me. When I was about 10 my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. At the time, he was diagnosed, he had stage 4 lung cancer leaving him with no other options other than radiation and medicines to try and slow the spread of the cancer and limit the pain he had been experiencing. I was with him a majority of the time he was sick and saw the way different types of medicines affected him. I knew that there had to be some way that this awful disease could be stopped and the suffering it brings to the patients and their families can be ended, that someone will discover a cure to treat and prevent this deadly disease that also happens to be the leading cause of death among the cancer groups. I decided from then on that I wanted to do something to make a difference in people’s lives and try to prevent people from experiencing what my grandfather had to endure.
