Psychology has been a passion of mine since I first took AP psychology in high school, and I knew then that psychology was the major for me. Beyond that, I had no idea what exactly I wanted to do in the field of psychology. The ideas of working in child psychology or clinical and even experimental have all run through my mind as I have tried to assess my potential career and life paths. This past semester, I received the opportunity to travel and study abroad in Ireland. There I immersed myself in Irish culture and I got to explore an entirely new path and new way of using what I have learned thus far in my academic career. As part of my experience I spend several days in Belfast, Northern Ireland and learn firsthand about the troubles and the role of conflict mediation in ending them. I found that I have a real interest in conflict mediation. It has caused me to think about my goals for the next five years and how to accomplish those goals …show more content…
Kennedy Institute for Conflict Intervention for this coming summer 2017. I will be working with the institute researching the general topic of international conflict prevention and crisis management, as well as looking at future capacities and effectiveness in those areas. Additionally, I will take this summer as an opportunity to look for employment following graduation.
When I return from Ireland, I will have one remaining semester and will spend that semester working on my honors project for psychology as well as finalizing green card applications, securing employment and making all other necessary arrangements for moving to Ireland. Once the semester ends in December 2017 and I officially graduate in January 2018, I would like to move and begin working in Ireland in a field related to psychology such as working Pieta House, a suicide prevention organization, or working with an NGO/ IGO like Trocaire or amnesty

It is my strong desire to attend Fielding Graduate University APA (American Psychological Association) accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology. I have always been intrigued by the human mind for as long as I can remember, specifically the psychopathology of it. I truly enjoy conducting psychological research, learning about psychopathology and how to treat it. While conducting research and learning, it is important to remember that the purpose of psychology isn’t to predict a person’s thoughts, actions, and behaviors, but to understand them. There are dozens of events that occurred in my twenty-five years of life that led me to this meaningful choice of pursuing a doctorate. The two most significant events were when I was in the
Currently in my junior year of undergraduate studies, I am pursuing a major in Psychology. Throughout my three years at Hunter College, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA—although this may be pressuring at times, it is the force that keeps me motivated and energized to achieve the best. I am a Jenny Hunter Scholar, a member of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, and a member of the Sigma Epsilon Phi Chapter of the National German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha. During the previous Fall semester, I was a teaching assistant for a statistics course in psychological methods.
There are several reasons why the field of psychology has held a great fascination for me; personal, general and professional. These reasons, explained and justified, should correlate to how I find myself to be writing this paper. Continuing in this vein should bring us to a determination of how these areas of interest correspond with my professional and academic experience, finally leading me to a place where I can make a prediction of what I hope to contribute to the field through receiving my doctorate in the philosophy of psychology. Delving into the first reason requires delving into a very personal part of my life – my family.
Studying Psychology at both A-level and undergraduate level has greatly advanced my knowledge and enthusiasm into the extensive investigation of the human brain and behaviour. The discipline of Psychology requires an open mind, a critical perspective, and a keen desire to make positive societal contributions. As a teacher of Psychology, I not only hope to convey my passion for the field, but to utilise these characteristics in order to build a good rapport with students and to encourage them to take the same approach both within and beyond their academic studies. Despite coming from a background whereby little emphasis was placed on the importance of education, I was able to excel beyond expectations due to the continuous guidance and encouragement of my teachers.
