Introduction
This proposal is to help bring to life the Semester on the Appalachain, a semester long expedition on the Appalachian Trail for a group of ten participants, in order to provide an environment that can not be replicated in a typical classroom setting. In the proposal, it will provide research on the benefits of experiential and expedition education, improvement on psychological health, and organizations that run similar programs.
When you picture a classroom, what do you think of? You more than likely picture a chalkboard, desks for all the students and teacher. A new way of teaching has developed that removes students from the stereotypical environment and places they in a new and engaging environment. This is experiential education.

The first requirement would be to have an individual that would be able to drive the group to their start point and pick them up at their end point. The individual would then be able to return between both events. The second requirement would to be two individuals that would guide the group and help facilitate the lessons and activities that would be taught throughout the program. Without these two individuals, the program can not run safely and effectively. The final requirement is the investment of gear for the trip. While the price may seem substantially large, the equipment can be reused for countless years to …show more content…
Compared to the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail, the Appalachian Trail is widely regarded as the safest options of the three. This is because the Appalachian Trail is accepted by the communities it runs through. It is common to see members of the community be at the trailhead and offer assistance to those that are passing by. Also, the spans between communities are relatively small. On the Appalachian Trail Conservancy website, they state that do not need to carry more than 6 days worth of food maximum because of how close resupply points

This unit based on the earliest resources on Canadian history and on the first nations whom lived in this country. This resources were about pre-Cartier and his explorations. Some nations, for example the people who lived in St. Lawrence valley – whom did not have a specific name to be called at- and historians still lacking enough evidence on their existence or what happened with them. These people who are identified as St. Lawrence Iroquoians were lived in the contact area which means the conquerors reached them first. The Iroquoians were exposed to all the dangers Europeans carried into the native lands, different types of diseases they were not immune
The scenes journey along the Appalachian Trail captures the true magnificence and greatness of the eastern U.S. of wilderness. Starting in the Deep South at the foothills of the smoky mountains, this journey overwhelms one with southern beauty while also making one experience the South’s legendary simplicity and retreat from the urban gridlock of modern society. The Appalachian Trail’s scenery attracts many people from all over the world to witness it for them. Causing many people to come with their families and possibly volunteer.
Taking on a journey stretching well over 2,100 miles, covering fourteen states (from Maine to Georgia) by foot is no simple stroll where at the end of the day a comfortable bed and hot meal would await you. Instead, hiking the Appalachian Trail can be an endless battle with all the elements of mother nature: whereas in one state spring would have sprung already with wildflowers dressing the forest floors and insects buzzing through crisp air, on other parts of the trail it [the weather conditions] would be smothering heat, but meanwhile a few states north the rain would fall endlessly with gusts of cold wind, and snow would blanket the pathways of the trail and more than likely blizzards

The person you become, is created from who you were at all aspects of your life. Whether, if it was the day you were born, or your childhood years, even in your teen years. All of that contributes to who you are as a person, nothing else matters. Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, all have different personalities, along with different origins. All of which have their set of similarities, along with a ton of differences.
Experiencing the Appalachian Mountains first hand is a discovery of it own reward. Ascending to the peak of the mountain peering over a pond is a feat as much as it is a reward. Many other tourists hike the trail year-round. Walking through a
The book “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson was a great read and very much exhibited the division between Americans and the natural world people tend to forget. It takes true dedication to walk through the Appalachian Trail. With sweat, time, and dedication it will pay
Around three-quarters of these hikers end up stopping somewhere in their tracks, for reasons such as, fatigue, injury, or illness. Though it might be thought that a thru-hiker has to be in great athletic condition for around a seven month hike, that is not always the case. “Emma Gatewood, nicknamed “Grandma Gatewood,” was 67 years old, with 11 children and 23 grandchildren, when she became one of the first-ever thru-hikers in 1955. Since then, hikers as old as 81 and as young as 5 have completed the trek, as have several blind hikers and an above-the-knee amputee.” (Greenspan) Between 1936 and 1969, there were only 59 completions of the trail that were recorded. However the numbers began to rise in 1970, when 10 people completed the trail. In the late 1970s, hiking the Trail started to become a trend and the term “2,000-miler” was used to identify the growing group of hikers. (“2000”) By 2008 the 10,000 completion hike was recorded. Today, there are around 18,000 recorded completions. In the first several decades of the trend of hiking the Trail, “women represented only about 15% of those who completed the entire A.T. Trends are changing, though. In 2016, women represented 29% of the total hike completions reported.” (“2000”) While preparing to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, one must do more than just gather up gear. The process of preparation is all

In the United States, starting salaries for teachers who have completed a four-year degree are far lower compared to many other professions, which also require a four-year degree. In most states, teachers must undergo testing and other rigorous certification requirements, but they are given the same consideration or status as beginning professionals in other areas. Although attractive incentives are offered, the compensation does not compare to the long hours of work and schooling required for a teaching career.
In 1976, I hiked a grueling 8 or so miles on the Appalachian Trail (AT) in the mountains of North Carolina as a 13-year-old boy. Almost 40 years later, I decided to start section hiking the trail to seek solitude and a transformation of my mind, body, and spirit. My current goal is to hike 200 miles a year on the AT. Currently, I’ve hiked 271 miles in the last 13 months. I have just over 1900 miles to go on this 2200-mile journey. I am in no rush to complete the trail and each hike teaches me something different.
I needed a weekend away from the all too humdrum existence of day-to-day living. I decided that a good diversion might be to hike the Appalachian Trail for a weekend. After class on Friday, I ran to my car so that I could begin this wonderful divergence from daily life. The parking lot at Carver’s Gap, my destination, finally came into view as I drove up US 19E. Across the road, a short wooden fence separated me from my wonderful weekend of adventure. From the second I reached the parking lot, I realized that this hike, a great way to escape from reality for a weekend, awaited me upon the trail I saw dwindling in the distance.
