Apgar test is a test performed at 1 and 5 minutes of birth, to quickly determine the well being of the baby immediately after birth. The 1 minute determines how well the baby had tolerated the birthing process and the 5 minute determines how well the baby does outside the womb of the mother. It can also be done after 10 minutes in rare cases. This test is done by examining the following parameters; Heart rate, Breathing, Muscle tone, Reflexes, and Skin color by the healthcare provider [either the doctor, midwife, or nurse]. It is scored from 0 to 2 depending on the observed condition.
The infant is given a score of zero if he/ she is not breathing {respiration}, no heartbeat {heart rate} , if the muscles are floppy and loose { muscle tone},
