The poem entitled APO on the Wall was intended for the people who need a glimpse of the truth. I like the poem for it contains the truth of what had happened in the past years ago when Martial Law had occur. It was a good poem because it emphasizes the loyalty of the soldiers. I like the poem entitled Apo on the Wall of BJ Patino because it provides a glimpse of what martial law was like back then. It gives me also an idea of what kind of relationship the narrator has with his father. Reading between the lines has a lot more to say than understanding its literal meaning. It made me feel like I was there when it happened, like I witnessed what had happened. I made a vision that was like it. Although, I didn’t actually lived then, I wasn’t even formed yet, there is a connection deep down that made me appreciate the current regime. If I’ll make a constructive …show more content…
The time in that poem was during Martial Law and the Apo that the narrator was referring to was the late Ferdinand Marcos. This poem is trying to tell us that if we work hard, we can achieve rewards from our efforts like the persona’s father in the poem, who achieved plaques and medals for being a loyal soldier. It also depicts the Marcos administration that everyone was alarmed and become snappy because of their fear of the soldiers during Martial Law. In the poem, there is a line that says “that was no place for a boy, only men”, meaning there’s no place for weak people, only the brave ones. There is also a line that says, “I know, I know what you’re doing”, meaning that the persona’s father must keep on doing his job because that photo on the wall was Apo who was like looking at the persona’s father guiding him. I really appreciate the help of Filipino people who’s against the Martial Law because they give us freedom until the present. During that time too, the people had experienced
The overall message in this poem is a drill sergeant educating young soldiers and preparing them for the harsh reality of war. He is not playing ‘Mr. nice guy’, he is being tough and strict to give the soldiers no easy way out.
Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.
Cruel and terrible events forever leave a mark on our memory. Especially, when these events are directly related to person, the memory reproduces every second of what happened. Unfortunately, humanity fully cognized the term of "war". "Facing it" by Yusef Komunyakaa reveals another several sides of the war. Poem tells the reader about which consequences, the war left and how changed people's lives. The hero identifies itself with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, mourns all those killed and who did not return. That is why the poem is dramatic. War has become a part of the hero's life, even after the ending.
In the middle of the poem, the speaker arrives at the number of casualties from the war. When he reads this number he can’t believe that he is still alive. As he reads down the names he uses the visual imagery and simile to describe how he expected to find his own name in “letters like smoke” (line 16). This helps the reader understand how lucky the speaker felt about somehow escaping the war still alive. As he goes
The poem describes the life of a man during the Vietnam War, a conflict involving the United States and local Vietnamese who supported a communist regime, and how unexplainable sporadic events saved his life. He gives thanks to an unknown force that saves his life multiple times throughout his tour in Vietnam because the instances are what some people consider luck and others and act of a higher being or deity. Throughout the poem he expresses his gratitude towards the entity that watches over him but later he questions the existence of a god because why would one allow there to be a war in the first place and then send
The author was giving a message then at the end of the poem it changes. He was giving the message that war happens to everybody and that they will have to go to war at some point in there life. The problem is that they don’t know the bourdon that it puts on the people that he has supported and been supported by until his son is sent of. He gets a totally different feeling when he doesn’t know what could happen to his son. He gets his message across by proving that every body has something to do with war wether they like it or not. Your parents might have been to war, if not them then your uncles, cousins, friends, or your neighbors(old men). Then if it isn’t them it could be your child who is going and the feeling is different, you lose the feeling of security when you cant protect your child. He
Sideshow is a poem written by Danez Smith describing that he has been worrying too much on boys killing each other that he has forgotten when they do it on themselves. He explains that even though the cause of death is similar that they are the same even using a metaphor to call them as actors.
The poem was written to show that war is a waste of human life as the soldier knows he will die one day as well as the men around him, just some quicker than others. This can be evident in stanza four of the poem: “I know I’ll join them somewhere, one day.” The language used is more casual than formative, this is effective as it shows the personal feelings and thoughts of the soldier during the time
In Neon Vernacular, Yusef Komunyakaa brought to the forefront the struggles of African American soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War. They fought for the freedom of the very ones that denied them their freedom to be equal and the same as their white counterparts. The collection of poems delves into the everyday matters that were a constant reminder for the African American soldiers that they were free to fight, but not free to be as the white soldiers. An analysis of Komunyakaa’s work opens the eyes of those who felt that the Vietnam War zone was an equal opportunity for all those who fought for America. In addition, the realities of racism that existed in the Vietnam War are highlighted.
The poem’s theme is a simple, yet powerful one; never forget the people who sacrificed their lives for our lives to be lived free. The poem repeatedly refers to these people as heroes in accordance with this theme, as it demonstrates the poet’s appreciation towards these people who died. The title, Not A Hero, refers to the old digger not being a hero as the only heroes were those who died for their country, hence; “First of all I was not a hero”, "I served with many

“The Yellow Wallpaper” provides an insight into the life of the narrator- a woman suppressed and unable to express herself because of her controlling husband- leading the reader down her fall to insanity, allowing for her inner conflict to be clearly expressed. The first person point of the view the author artfully uses and the symbolism present with the wallpaper cleverly depicts the inner conflict of the narrator, losing her own sanity due to the constraints of her current life. However, while it seems that the narrator in “ The Yellow Wallpaper” succumbed to her own insanity, the endless conflict within herself and her downward spiral to insanity is seen through a different light, as an inevitable path rather than a choice taken as the story develops.
causes the poem to flow, and thus lightens up the dark and serious issue of war. The lines "But ranged as infantry, And staring face to face, I shot at him as he at me, And killed him in his place." are easy to read; however, their meaning is extremely
