Millions of people all over the world watched as Apollo 11 was launched from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969. Two hours after it left Earth, the rocket Lunar Command and Landing Modules separated from the main rocket, and three days later the crew entered lunar orbit. A day later the landing section separated from the Lunar Command Module and landed on the moon.

Planning for the Apollo Space Program began in 1957 and the program ended in 1972. The Apollo Space Missions increased our understanding of the moon. The goal of the missions was to land men on the moon and return them safely to earth. This goal was achieved with Apollo 11. On July 20, 1969 man walked on the moon for the first time. This was a huge step in space exploration and much preparation had gone into it. Apollo 8 orbited the moon, but did not test a lunar lander, and Apollo 9 tested a lunar lander while orbiting earth. After achieving the goal of getting man to the moon, the Apollo program continued to enlarge our understanding of the moon. Apollo missions 12 and 14 installed seismic stations on the moon’s surface. This led us to the discovery of “moonquakes”, which are essentially earthquakes on the moon’s surface.

Although this historical event was in fact a victory over the Russians, the fact that we had the engineering capabilities to put a man on the moon was far more important. Each step of the Apollo missions tested a different aspect of what would be the final mission, putting a man on the moon. The main concern of the mission was getting Armstrong and Aldrin down to the surface and back home safely. Genuine experimentation did not occur until NASA gained confidence in their ability to send astronauts to the moon. Upon contact with the moon’s surface, Armstrong and Aldrin unveiled and read the commemorative plaque on the lunar module’s leg, stuck the U.S. flag in the ground, and then spoke to the current president, Richard Nixon. Most of the science done on the moon included the planting of seismic equipment and a laser ranging reflector, the collection of rock and soil samples, and measuring the trajectory of regolith

Apollo 11 changed the way Americans saw the world, and the way the world saw Americans. The world had been competing, the biggest battle being between Russia and the United States. The whole world was aware of the space race. The landing on the moon was not just important to America. It was important to all of mankind. Neil Armstrong and the other crew members were shot into fame overnight, with Neil Armstrong being the first man on the moon. The Apollo 11 mission will never be forgotten by the American people.

In November 2011, retired astronaut James Lovell sold a valuable item through an auction house. It was a checklist from the Apollo 13 moon mission in 1970. It was sold by Heritage Auctions for more than $388,000. It brought in so much money because it has Lovell's handwritten notes on it. Now, though, NASA is claiming that Lovell had no right to sell the checklist. The agency claims that the checklist did not belong to Lovell; it belonged to NASA. NASA is also making this claim for three other items from the auction.

Apollo 13 was the seventh attempted mission to go to the moon for the third time in April 11th 1970. The men who were assigned to that mission were Jim Lovell Fred Haise and Ken Mattingly. However Ken Mattingly got diagnosed with the measles, so they had to replace Ken with Jack Swigert who was the backup command module pilot for the Odyssey.

The apollo missions were like steps for the next mission. The goal at the end was to get the first man on the moon. It took in total 6 apollo missions to be able to get a man on the moon and back. The apollo missions where a great achievement for mankind and the united states. Getting a man on the moon meant that we could go to so many other planets and not just the moon.

Do you ever wonder if Apollo 13 was a successful mission? The Apollo 13 mission was supposed to be to go to the moon and get rocks,but that didn’t happen. However, Apollo 13 was a successful failure because it was a mission to the moon, with many challenges along the way, as well as a free fall back to earth.

For the enrich project I decided to research and look into the Apollo missions. I watched the movie Apollo 13 with my husband not long ago, and I really got an interest in what really happened with all of those missions and what they led to. The concept of searching space was something that was extremely interesting for everyone at that time. The first Apollo mission completely failed, and there was a fire killing all of the astronauts in the shuttle. It took until Apollo 11 to actually land on the moon. There were many other attempts after that, only succeeding on Apollo 17. Other than those two times, of over 10 tries, there were two moon landings. This was something that was amazing. On October 11th, 1968, Apollo 7 launched with a three-person crew: Schirra, Eisele, and Cunningham in a Saturn IB rocket (NASA “Apollo 7”). This rocket type of rocket was also the launch vehicle for Apollo 5 and consists of two stages: S-IB as the first stage and S-IVB as the second as well as the third stage in the Saturn V rocket. The Apollo Space Missions stemmed from many different desires, not the least of which was the growing space race between Cold War rivals the United States and the U.S.S.R. The discovery of the rocket technology helped the nation to meet its interests when it came to space. The goal of the program, run by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was to land humans on the surface of the moon and then to return them safely to the earth.
