Society has a tendency to misjudge individuals based on their appearance. In S.E. In Hinton's book, The Outsiders, society often judges people by their appearance. An example of this is how people treat the Greasers gang versus how they treat the Socs gang. People see the Greasers as people who would break the law and the socs as people who would not do anything wrong, all because of how they dress and even how each group dresses or has their hair. Even today, people judge other people based on how they look and their overall appearance. In the Outsiders, the Greasers are judged badly because of their appearance. Why are people so quick to judge other people based on appearance? The way in which they dress is actually very nice for boys their age. …show more content…
“Greaser. greaser. greaser.” Steve sings. “Oh victim of environment, underprivileged, rotten no-count hood.”(S.E.Hinton's page 136). Because of what people say, they might start acting like people think of them. People might think that the soccer players are not judged by their appearances, but they do. Socs are judged on their appearances, just like the Greasers. They all look decent and clean cut, people assume that they are decent kids. You have to look beyond appearances sometimes to get a good look at a person. “Clean shaven with semi-beatle haircuts, wearing striped or checkered shirts with light-red or tan-colored jackets or madras ski jackets”(S.E.Hinton page 141). The socs are judged by society as well as the greasers. “Don’t you ever try to give us handouts and then feel high and mighty about it.”(S.E.Hinton page 129). The socs are liked by society and they are judged by the Greasers because they hate each other since one is from the higher class and one is from the lower class. On the outside we see a lot of how people judge by looks and not what is on the inside. It is easy to look at someone and judge them based on how they
While not it is not as common now as it was in the past, today we still judge people before we get to know their personality. We judge them based on things such as their appearance and accent. Somebody who is dressed neater may be judged as potentially smarter than someone who wasn’t. Another example is something shown in the Outsiders which is how the Socs and Greasers each judge each other based on their social class. Socs are stereotypically rich and smart and have everything given to them. Greasers, on the other hand, are classified as poorly educated and tough. This is not true with all the characters though. Bob, is a soc who didn't have the right discipline growing up, resulting in bad decisions regarding drugs. Johnny, is a greaser
Socs, to greasers are stuck-up, richer and have more perfect lives. But that is quite far from the truth. "All bob wanted was for someone to say 'No' and they never did. They never did. That was what he wanted [...] to have somebody lay down the law, set the limits, give him something solid to stand on.
Now, even thought the Socs are the evil ones, society is blind to this. To the rest of society, Socs are the harmless party partakers, who's only crimes are underage drinking and "accidental" destruction of property. In fact, society is so blind, they barely even see the rivalry between the two. Even though Socs get in trouble, just like their opposites, according to the book, a Soc who might be in trouble with the law one day can be a hero for someone the next, while Greasers are never appealed to, until Johnny, Pony, and Dally's heroic act. In society, people are viewed by their wealth d outside appearance, not their personality.
In S.E. Hintions novel “The Outsiders” The socs were more of a disgrace and menace to the society then the greasers and they used it against them. The socs could easily do something rebellious and blame it on the greasers because the police saw them as pests to the society. They were seen as the menace of society but is that all really true? Sure they don’t look like the nicest people but there's more than what meets the eye.
The Greasers have always believed that the Socs were just rich brats that got whatever they wanted, and they thought of themselves as the rundown
Greasers think that Socs are disgusting and spoiled people. A quote from the book can give an example of how they think of Socs, “I am a Soc. I am the privileged and the well-dressed. I throw beer blasts, drive fancy cars, break windows at fancy parties.” (pg. 136).
Socs get better treatment, even when they break the law to get the feeling of dominance over the greasers. Also they do not relate to each other as individuals so they just don’t know the greasers but they always knew to not like them and that was how it was.
The Greasers were more poor than the Socs and or the middle class, they were more wild and crazy. The Socs were the rich kids and they disliked the Greasers, usually if a Soc saw a Greaser then they would automatically think of a dirty trouble maker. But on the other hand, the Greasers weren’t as bad
Some people think the Socs have it worse because they are expecting more of them or they would be let down by their family and friends. The Greasers don’t get the the respect and also can’t walk alone or they would get jumped by the Socs. The Greaser always get misjudged and misunderstood because where they live and their actions. The Greasers have it harder than the Socs because of where they live in a bad side of town and aren't very wealthy. The Greasers don't get the respect and can't walk alone
The greasers were considered to be hoods and muggers who don't fit in with the rest of society. However, to the greasers, the Socs life seems completely strange and foreign. The greasers problems are strange to the Socs, and the Socs problems are strange to the greasers. A Soc doesn't have to worry about simple things, like
Even though it’s common to judge others based on appearance, these judgements are not always accurate.
Judging a person by the way they look has been done innumerable times before. In the movie “Remember the Titans”, it shows how quickly a person can be judged, just by the way that they look. Whether a person is black, white, has long hair or short hair. Someone or something is always going to be criticized no matter how good a person is doing to fulfill the job that’s given to them. Never judge a person just by their appearance, you never really know a person unless you speak to them.
People judge other people because of their social class. For example, in page 29 of the book “The Watsons Go To Birmingham”,Kenny Watson explained that whenever somebody new started their school the ,students would take time and see what the new kids were like. The students would check what type of clothes the new kids wore.Kids that wore brand clothes would make fun of the new kids like Rufus because of their raggedy clothes. Rich people and poor people
One of the main vs man conflict in the Outsiders is the rival between the greasers and the socs. The greasers are the east side boys who " steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations". The greasers, due to their family background and physical appearance, are being stereotyped as individuals who are poor and are provided with fewer opportunities than others. On the other hand, the socs, are " the west-side rich kids" who come from affluent backgrounds and" likes to jump greasers and throw beer blasts for kicks". In the eyes of the public, the Socs are the social elites whereas the greasers are considered the less privileged, second-class citizens.
Everyday, we see hundreds of people. Whether we see them on the street, at work, at school, or on television, people pass through our visual field. Fortunately or unfortunately, we judge these people. It may be intentional, it may be unintentional, or it may be somewhat intentional, but we form opinions about people based on their style of dress.
