The purpose of this paper is to assess the town of Lusby, Maryland to determine any environmental concerns that could be a potential or real health risk to the community. A windshield survey was conducted by driving around the town to assess the environment, including air, water, and land. The location and surroundings, including manmade and natural, were identified and taken into consideration during the driving tour. Also assessed where the people themselves by observing community vitality and general appearance, social and economic conditions, health resources, social functioning, and attitudes toward health. Insufficiencies will be identified and diagnosed to help the community thrive to maintain or improve health.

The environment and the health of the surrounding population go hand in hand. The Environmental Protection Agency takes on this ever so important mission of protecting them both. The mission statement of the EPA states, “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Small Business Programs is to support the protection of human health and the environment by advocating and advancing the business, regulatory, and environmental compliance concerns of small and socio-economically disadvantaged businesses, and minority academic institutions (US Enviromental Protection Agency, 2010).” The impact of its mission can be defined clearly as it examines the impact of contamination in the air, the water, and the land on human health.

The primary health issues that come with the impact of air pollution are asthma, cardiovascular illnesses and premature mortality. These health issues are due to pollution and the poor air quality such as ozone. Thus, human health becomes a concern and issue. The individuals who are usually more vulnerable to such illnesses are the children and elderly. Health effects of air and water pollutants are major environmental issues that need to be better understood and controlled in the United States and globally. This issue is so important for many reasons, but for this discussion it is being identified to give a voice to the urgency to the world to pay attention to how our environment is failing into a catastrophic level of decline because of these types of pollutants. In order to overcome the pollutants there needs to be a call to action. We need to bring these things into check which means their levels are in need of being lower. “Pollution can occur from natural causes or from human activities. Discussions about the effects of air pollution have focused mainly on human health but attention is being directed to environmental quality and amenity as well” (Air and Water Pollution, 2015, p. 1).

As humans, it is important that we understand what our built environment is. The built environment is human activities and their interactions to the environment that are shaped by our social economic activities. Furthermore, it is also imperative to know what pollutants are, “pollutants are any gas, liquid or solid substance that have been emitted into the atmosphere and are in high enough concentrations to be considered harmful to the environment, or human, animal and plant health” (B.C. Air Quality , 2013).
