Career Development I will be talking with a client who is having issues with his career and drugs issues. Using the 4 principles from Motivational Interviewing (Rollnick & Bell, 1992) which is empathy, discussion of discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and support of efficacy, the interview aims at getting the client into the career-changing action they are contemplating. The client John is a 29 year old white male who seeks career counseling. He is employed full-time as a tester for a computer company and works part-time as a DJ for weddings and other social events at night and on the weekends (Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M.D.

526). He finds his work an increasingly drudgery and is concerned about the lack of long-term stability in the industry. He finds his work as a DJ more interesting and his employment there is sporadic at best but he believes the hectic party pace and atmosphere would wear on him if he was doing it full-time (Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M.D. 2012 pg. 526). John stated that he copes with his job stress and dissatisfaction of his job by recreational drug use. He states that he has been an infrequent marijuana user for years and has recently started using cocaine regularly after being introduced to it through his work as a DJ (Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M.D. 2012 pg. 526). He states that his marijuana use help him escaped the intense pressure of his work as a tester and the cocaine helps him become energized for his work as a DJ (Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M.D. 2012 pg. 526). He states that he is aware of the increase in his drug usage in recent months but his primary anxiety concerns his current job situation (Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M.D. 2012 pg. 526). But he is afraid as to what this would entail, thus he is, according to the TTM model, in that 'precontemplation stage'. The sample dialogue below attempts to show the client that he is overestimating the cons and underestimating the pros.
P: Hi John how are your doing. I understand that you are thinking of making some career changes? Will you expand on that, especially as to the motivation behind why?
C: All things
