Dear Admissions Committee:
I am applying to your Master of Education in Counseling Education program for the spring of 2018. I graduated from Claflin University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. When I first entered college in 2006 I had no solid career goals. I went to the school I thought my parents wanted me to go to and ended up majoring in a field where I felt I could begin a lucrative career. In the end this lead me to a number of jobs where I had no room for growth, I was undervalued and unappreciated, and overall unsatisfied. I have been employed in various roles in government. They are also collaborating with teachers and administrators about the best practices and methods to eliminate the achievement gap.They are providing the sets of skills and services to the school system such as in the classroom assisting in teaching kids decision making, getting along with others, and career planning. This profession provides a look at the students' as a whole, the mental, emotional, and physical health. I want to be able to assist children in being whole, happy, and provide them with the skills needed to navigate through life. Although pursuing a Master’s degree in counselor education will require significant commitment, I am now at a place in life where I can apply the skills I have gained from the workforce.
School counselors are leaders working alongside teachers, parents, and other professionals to solve problems that have presented within the school systems and support students. Because of the complex society we live in today school counselors are needed to provide the additional support students need in order to be successful. It is essential when kids enter the school system they have a solid foundation for a positive start as they are developing new social skills.
