Any user using an application in a communication network will expect the quality of the application to be high without annoying interruptions or delays. In mobile environments due to user mobility, interference and varying channel conditions lead to a variation of the available network resources which ultimately affects application quality. An approach named over-the-top (OTT) virtual access network allows the aggregation of multiple wireless networks into a single IP pipe to provide users with more bandwidth.
So how do you define bandwidth? “Bandwidth is a measurement of bit-rate of available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bits per second or multiples of it in computer networking and computer science” [1] The aim of this paper is to evaluate application-aware algorithms which can aggregate multiple access links to provide additional resources if necessary. For that we focus on a mechanism over the network layer which need additional hardware, but it is also transparent to today’s transport protocols. End host-based multipath protocols like Multipath-TCP [11] or SCTP-CMT [12] in contrast require changes at the end hosts, but rely on the available hardware The aim of this paper is to evaluate application-aware algorithms which can aggregate multiple access links to provide additional resources if necessary. We all know that the continuous traffic in wireless networks is due to the advent of smartphones, mobile broadband modems, tablets etc. Multimedia…
