Chapter 9
1) Approximately how much water do you need each day to stay healthy?
Water constitutes 50% to 70% of the human body. Its unique chemical properties enable it to dissolve substances as well as serve as medium for chemical reactions, temperature regulation and lubrication (found in the knees and other joints of the body); it also aids in regulating the acid base balance in the body. It helps remove waste from the body and is the basis for saliva, bile and amniotic fluid.
It is clear that obtaining the proper daily intake of water is extremely important. For adults daily water needs are estimated at 2.7 liters (11 cups) for adult women to 3.7 liters (15 cups) for adult men, total water is a combination of fluids and

Too much or too little water and/or salt in our bodies is dangerous. Therefore the amount of water and salt excreted in urine and the amount of urine excreted is adjusted to meet the needs of the body.
3) Identify four factors that influence the bioavailability of minerals from food.
Food supplies us with many minerals, but the way in which our bodies are able to absorb them varies. The degree to which ingested nutrient is absorbed from food sources and is available to our body is called bioavailability. The bioavailability of minerals depends on many factors. The mineral content listed in food composition table for amount of a mineral in a food is just a starting point for estimating the actual contribution the food will make to our mineral needs. For example spinach contains much calcium but only 5% can be absorbed because of the vegetables high concentration of oxalic acid, a calcium binder. Usually 25% of calcium is absorbed by adults.
Minerals from animal products are absorbed better as binders such as fiber in plant foods are not present to hinder absorption. The mineral content of plants greatly depends on mineral concentrations of the soil in which they are grown. Refined plant food has a lower content of minerals.
Four factors that influence bioavailability of minerals from food are outlined below:
Fiber -Mineral Interactions: Components of fiber, particularly phytic acid in grain fiber can limit absorption of some
The body needs to maintain equilibrium to function properly in everyday life. The most important substance it must regulate is water; water is everywhere in our body and its balance is essential for proper body function.
2.5 litres are recommended per day to stay fully hydrated. Water accommodates for 50-80% of the human body. It assists human digestion by absorbing essential nutrients and excreting waste. It is vital in regulating bodily functions such as blood volume and transporting nutrients (2). It also plays a role during physical activity. When the body overheats, it releases fluids by sweating. If the body becomes dehydrated, by not having enough water, it can lead to impaired physiological responses and performance. Although this is temporary, if adequate consumption of water is not met daily, it can lead to health issues including kidney stones, urinary tract cancers, as well as colon cancers
I. Water helps to produce nourishment and protection to major organs through the removal of waste from the body
The human body consists mostly of water, and is a major constituent to the human body and vital organs; of this 90% include blood plasma, lymph, urine, saliva, digestive juices, bile, cerebrospinal fluid and tissue fluid. Water enables substances to be transported throughout the body, red blood cells for example, as wells as supplying the medium required for metabolic reaction to take place (respiration). Without water the progression of these fluids would not be possible. Water is constantly being transported between the fluid compartments of
Being aware of your own personal mineral intake is quite an essential part of your well-being. It is often overlooked by both me and others. There are two main types of minerals: trace minerals and macro minerals. The term macro mineral refers to the group of minerals that you need to make sure you include relatively large amounts of in your diet. Macro minerals refer to minerals such as sulfur, calcium, sodium, and potassium. Trace minerals refer to the group of minerals that your body needs miniscule amounts of in order to work properly and be healthy. Trace minerals refer to minerals such as copper, zinc, selenium, and iron. Our mineral intake comes directly from plant based sources and indirectly from animal based sources. In addition,
Water is the most abundant compound in the human body. Water is ESSENTIAL for the process of homeostasis. Water increases the volume of blood which in result affects blood pressure and the heart rate. Also, if there is a drop in blood volume there is also a drop in the blood pressure. This then triggers us to become thirsty, and drinking water increases the volume again stabalizing the body.
Our body makes up around 70% of water. Needless to say, water has a lot of benefits for our body. A healthy person can drink three gallons of water per day. From our hearts to our kidneys, water all has something to do to the contribution to our body. It helps to refresh our body, push all the toxins out of our body and slow down the dehydration process or maybe, just to cushion our body joints. Wherever water travels, they carry nutrition, minerals with it into our body.
However, there are many, many factors that affect the ease with which minerals are absorbed into the bloodstream through our digestive tract. As we age, it becomes harder for our digestive system to absorb minerals and our cells have a harder time utilizing them. By taking mineral supplements that are already in an easily absorbed form, we can make it simpler to get enough of all our minerals. Water soluble minerals are the easiest way for the body to absorb and utilize a mineral supplement. Liquid mineral supplements are superior to other supplements for being absorbed and utilized in our body. Take control of your health today by making sure you are getting the optimum amount of all the minerals your body
Water is essential for life on earth. Water is needed for growing food, keeping ourselves clean, generating power, controlling fire and most importantly to stay alive! This list is simply non-ending. This shows that water is an integral part of our daily life and we are heavily dependent on it.
The main reasons are to avoid dehydration, support kidney function, to produce urine and flush out toxins from the body and to strengthen the immune system. This is why populations without a freshwater supply are more prone to contracting diseases. On average, a person should drink between 1 to 2 cups of water a day. For me personally, from drinking bottled water, it’s usually more than that.
As you can see, water plays a major role in many factors of your body.
It is important to monitor your kidney function. Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day (8 cups) to help reduce the risk for stone
Drinking water, also known as potable water or improved drinking water is safe enough for drinking and food preparation. Globally, in 2012, 89% of people had access to water suitable for drinking. Nearly 4 billion had access to tap water while another 2.3 billion had access to wells or public taps. The amount of drinking water required is variable. For those working in a hot climate, up to 16 liters a day may be required. Infants are about 70% to 80% water while the elderly are around 45%.
It 's interesting, most people have absolutely no idea how important water is to their health and well-being. In fact, most people live their entire life dehydrated because they simply do not drink enough water. This
“Every month about 3.9 trillion gallons of water is consumed by the United States alone” stated The Water Information Program. Water conservation is when you use water efficiently and avoid waste. Our water supply is restricted which means we don’t have an endless supply. The Earth only has 3% of fresh water and we only have access to about 1% of it. We currently have an increasing population which makes it more important than ever to conserve our water supply. Most of the water we have access to is either wasted or polluted. We need to take action to help conserve the water we use today! Water is the most important substance to sustain human life. Water makes up to 60 percent of the human body. We can survive roughly up to 7-8 days without water. It is important to conserve water because it minimizes the effects of water shortages during droughts, water sustains human life, it helps preserve our environment, and it saves money.
