Schools are still segregated today. The segregation may not be as open as in the past but it os stoll present. In every coenwr of the United States,there is segregation in schools. One would think that segregatwd schools would be something of the past.It is shocking to some to still see that schools are still segregated even though blacks fought for schools to be desegregated. The share of black students attending schools that are more than 90 percent minority grew from 34 percent in 1989 to 39 percent in 2007. Kozol provides several supporting factors to his claim stemming from his research and observations of different school environments, its teachers and students, and personal conversations with those teachers and students.
There were many arguments both for and against school segregation. One was the claim that educational decisions were to be left to the state and local courts, and not to be decided by the Supreme Court. Another was that students should be taught where they are most comfortable learning. It was thought that white children were more comfortable learning with white children and the same goes for African-American children. Also, students must be given and equal learning environment, not the same school. This essay will be on the Segregation in Modern American Schools, how it affects the students, why it occurs, and the strides need to integrate. I picked this topic because I came from a town that was predominantly white. Therefore my school was predominantly white as well. I have always wondered if coming from this type of school has hindered my ability to interact with people of a different race, culture, or background. I also thought of how my education would have been different if I had been taught at a more diverse school. I would have learned more about other types of people not only from my teachers, but from my peers. I have always been interested in this topic and I think it affects more people than we think. In 1954 the Supreme Court saw a case called Brown v. Board of Education of Kansas. This case was about segregation of public schools but before this was to be found unconstitutional, the school system in Kansas and all over the United States had segregated schools. For example, Topeka Kansas had 18 neighborhood schools for white children, but only 4 schools for African American children. (Brown v. Board of Education) Many people believe that the problem is no longer existent; however, many present day African American students still attend schools that are segregated. After reading the text I decided to analyze Still Separate, Still Unequal by Johnathan Kozol. His call to action at the end of the article drives his point: just because we have laws set that says we are no longer segregated and that we should all be treated equally, does not mean that it is true. Different cultures are still treated unequally as proven by Kozol’s research into schooling in lower income areas. He trys to prove that even though Americans do not forcefully separate blacks and whites anymore, they get separated on their own. They get separated by class and location leaving schools with majority of Hispanics and blacks and sometimes only one percent white. Kozol wants the change that Brown v. Board of Education started.
Today—nearly fifty years after the Brown decision—explicit endorsements of school segregation have been erased from all state and federal laws, yet the faces of American schools remain eerily similar to those of the 1950s.
