Gender Roles/Stereotypes

“A man’s face is his autobiography. A woman’s face is her work of fiction.” -Oscar Wilde. This quote is a gender stereotype explaining that a man’s face shows the scars of his toughness and woman are covered with makeup. What if it was the other way around? Based off of gender roles/stereotypes this may sound odd to some people. Because of this, we should not influence gender stereotypes/roles onto people because most of these don’t apply like they used to.

What are stereotypes, you may ask? Stereotypes are natural thoughts that cause a person to categorize people to have a certain look, behavior, mind, etc. Gender roles are stereotypes based on the looks, behavior, sexuality, opinions/choices, thoughts, etc. of a certain gender. In addition, there are a lot common gender stereotypes that people believe today. Two of these stereotypes are girls are supposed to wear makeup and pink adorable dresses and guys are big, tough and never cry. …show more content…

Well, gender roles are teaching everyone to assume information about people they know nothing about. People judge others for not “portraying” their gender if they don’t act/look/etc like the stereotype. Also, people are being bullied everyday for being different from certain gender characteristics. Based on the beliefs of parents, teachers, the media, religion, and so on, different individuals can make “normal” people act out against them in harsh ways. Due to the discrimination of individuals who don’t apply to gender roles, these people may begin to not like who they are. These kind of negative thoughts commonly leads to depression, self harm, and suicide. What once began as a simple stereotype is now becoming something much
