Do you believe that the greatest leaders are born, not made? Explain your answer.
Some people are natural born leaders, nature plays a role. Some people work all their life to become great leaders, nurture plays a role. They both have many things in common but the most important one is that they want to be in charge; become leaders and not followers. They all have a vision and need to have a strong belief in their leadership ability. In addition, leaders set goals that help them achieve their vision. I believe that in order to be a great leader you first have to be a great follower. Being a follower before will make it easier for a leader to empathize with their followers. Putting in long hours and learning the job are signs of commitment and dedication. A person striving to be a great leader knows how to take constructive criticism and use it to his/her advantage. People trying to be a great leader seeks out opportunities to learn. Learning is a never ending process, you can always learn by the people above you and even the people below you. A great leader learn from every failure, trials and tribulations. Leaders never give up. Learning from your past failures can help you in the future when this problem arise again. Affective leaders hold themselves accountable for their own actions and never step down, even in the worst situations. Being in the military forces you into leadership positions. But you can tell good leaders from the bad ones. Leadership skills just come natural to a good leader. They know how to motivate people to want to get the job accomplished. Their goal becomes your goals. A good leader makes you want to go try to be like them. I believe some people have the personality to be a leader; but they have to put the work in to reach their full potential. Leadership is a personal skill that has to be developed and improved upon daily, just like an athlete works on his craft. We all come from different walks of life and that is often a factor in the way our leadership styles are shaped. Our differences of race, gender, religion, home environment, and lifestyle all have an effect on the way we are led growing up. It is a skill that is mastered over time, while never being perfected. Like anything else in life, leadership skills are often developed from who we are, where we come from and the people in our life who have taught us their knowledge.
Before anyone can become a good leader, they have to be able lead themselves in whatever area they want to lead in and I feel like I am a perfect example of that. Not everything comes easy for me, so I have had to learn to have good time management, self-discipline, and perseverance. To be a leader, one must have certain traits that contribute, in a good way, to their leadership. An example could be persistence. What is a leader without persistence, what would be the point of them doing anything at all? Bravery is another valuable trait to have. In order to be a leader, you must be brave enough to stand for what you believe in and what you want to change, even when the outcome may seem bleak. One more essential trait: motivation. A leader simply cannot be a leader if no one is motivated to follow them. When being asked if a leader is “born” or “made”, I always say it is both. I believe a person needs to be born with certain personality traits in order to be effective leader, but also they have to be taught different skills so they know how use their personality traits. By combining the different theories, I believe we can see what it takes to be leader. They must have the traits of emotional stability, open to experience, conscientious, and intelligence. They also need to go through different experiences and situations in life in order to be taught more leadership skills. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. There are many kinds of leaders; some lead through position and authority, while others lead through inspiration and vision. Some people are simply natural born leaders. However, whether one was born a leader or has to become a leader, all great leaders spend time developing their traits. Similarly, when you train for a sport, you first learn to develop the fundamentals, and then you work to master and apply them. I’ve been told I am a born leader, but have always sought to improve my leadership abilities through experience. Maxwell states, “The learned leader; has seen leadership modeled most of life, has learned leadership through training, and has self-discipline to become a great leader” (Maxwell, 93). This statement is reflective of my experience during my military tenure, and what it means to me is; leadership must be developed in practice, as well as in theory.
Although I am in the process of becoming a good leader myself, I would also like to help those who look up to me become good leaders as well.
