In the article, “Are video games art? No – but playing them can be” by Phil Hartup, Phil explains his opinion on how video games aren't art, but the players are. I believe that video games are art, and the players are creating the story. In the article, the author states “The artist is not the writer of the story or the person who designs the characters”. This statement is wrong, the artist is the one who created the game and the people who are playing the game a creating the story. Video games are a form of art, in which the players are painting the picture. Video games are very creative and the creators use their greatest imagination to create them. Video games are like “poetry in motion”, the way everything moves and interacts is simply
In the Article “Why Video Games Are Works Of Art” Kyle Chayka states his views on Roger Ebert’s argument made in the article “Video Games can never be art.” In Eberts article he says that video games are something that can be won, and include rules and objectives, where art is a visually pleasing, and emotionally powerful experience. As a result in Ebert saying this, Chayka comes back and states many of the things he has experienced in video games. For example, he states “I’ve stood at the top of a grass-blown knoll overlooking the sea, a view that stretched to cover a land of sprawling islands traversed only by my sailboat and me. I have played a musical instrument that controls the wind. I’ve been a sword-wielding teenage adventurer, a ghostbuster,
Tom Bissell, in his essay, “Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter” has described video games and how they are unique and different from movies, books, or even interactive films. Bissell says “I came to accept that games were incompetent with almost every aspect of what I would call traditional narrative.” This is showing the readers that even though there is a plot and story line, as characters can control and alter the story line or outcome by what you do or see throughout the game.
There is much knowledge within video games today. Being able to do things in a video game that some people can’t do in real life is important and I like that about video games. Some people may want to be a doctor, a NBA player, and a race car driver all at the same time and can do that with video games. Gaming can be based on real life situations and some can be based on fantasy situations which can let yourself have an
* Visualization – Video games are a great way to pass time, connect with others who enjoy similar games as you, and meet new friends through networking and similarities.
Many video games use visuals to mentally immerse gamers into a virtual world filled with seemingly living, breathing people, animals, or cities. According to Michael Samyn and Auriea Harvey, game designers for Tale of Tales, video games increasingly develop into a true medium of artistic expression (Lamb). In just forty years, video games transformed from an abuse of the new computer for entertainment purposes into a sophisticated form of popular art. The development of video games recently produced results that arguably equal other similar, representational arts. Video games share many qualities with other forms of art, but they are also artistically significant in their own way. “This seems to be something
On April 2006, Will Wright published the article “Dream Machines” in Wired Magazine. In his article, he adheres to the opinion that video games are not as bad as people consider them to be because video games significantly develop people’s imagination and the best of them allow players to be creators and not just consumers of the games they play.
The game seeks to trick us for a time into abandoning what is real (home) and focus on what is inside our monitors and T.V.s. Baudrillard spoke on the process of a simulated reality in a multi-step process. “In the first case, the image is a good appearance – representation is of the sacramental order.” This can be related to the early days of video games when they used cathode ray tubes to project pixelated images onto a curved glass scene. Video games where very new, and exciting. “In the second, it is an evil appearance – it is of the order of maleficence. This can be related to games starting about 15 years ago till today. Video games were and still are thought to be a source of violence in people. Many view them as a waste of time and that they detriment a person. Though this mentality is starting to fade as we shift towards the third order “In the third, it plays at being an appearance – it is of the order of sorcery”. Technology is starting to advance to the point that anyone without training in the field cannot understand what is going on. As myths about video games negative appearance are being debunked or confirmed their negative aspects are getting swallowed up by the more exciting advancements in the fields. “In the fourth, it is no longer of the order of appearances but of simulation.” At this level the video game stops being a game, and starts to become a part of everyday life (home). For as much as some may dedicate their whole lives to games, in the
Video games and art have a lot in common just that because many don't see videogames as art they see video games more as like entertainment. Just like you can get a scholarship for being an artist and painting a drawing. Video games can give you that opportunity also there's scholarships that they give for being very good at playing video games. Many don’t see videogames as art but why if just like an art piece it has many features that make it art. If we can get a lot of stuff from analyzing a painting that can have a lot of meaning why can't we do the same about a video games. Yes some would agree that video games are a work of art in a debate they asked the same question “can videogames be a work of art.” 78% said yes it is a work of art and 22% said no it's not. One of the person who said no said this “ Art cannot be replaced. Video games is in front of a
In an article titled Video Games Can Never be Art, the author, Roger Ebert, a famous film critic and well known journalist, shares his opinion that video games will never have the same status as other great works. To specify, he claims that ”no video gamer now living will survive long enough to experience the medium as an art form,” (Ebert). He then subsequently explains that the definition of art is “the creation of one artist,” (Ebert) meaning that a dance is an art because of the choreographer, and architecture is art because of the architect. (Ebert) Very early in the article Ebert makes his point exceedingly clear, he states that not only does he consider video games as something not worth his time, but that they will never (in this lifetime,) amount to the works of any great artist such as Michelangelo or Picasso. He then furthermore contrasts art mediums, including composing,
disbelief about video games not being considered art. In the article by Nick Gillespie, Are Video
In the article written by Roger Ebert, “Video Games Can Never Be Art”, he discusses his view on why video games should not be considered art. In the beginning Ebert explains why he thinks today’s video games can not compare to modern art, furthermore they will not ever be close to poets or filmmakers work (Ebert). Ebert then brings up the Ted talk with Santiago where he states, “No one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great poets, filmmakers, novelists and poets” (Ebert). What he is trying to say here is that when gamemakers are creating video games they will never equal up to their artistic ability of these different types of artist. Then he mentions how video games are not art because
Video games are just like sports, they get our heart pumping, minds racing and you get pumped up like an actual sport. Video games are just like sports with the competitiveness and the skill it makes video games, in fact, a sport. There are now stadiums packed with fans and gaming stars, cropping up in England, Poland, and Germany. Gaming also has its injuries just like
Kellee Santiago performed a ted talk sometime in 2010 and this Game innovator insists that games are more than entertainment. Video Games come in different shapes, sizes brands, etc. Video game art is not just the pictures they can be anything the controller design, the Game box art and even the way the game was programed it can be anything and everything.
Video games are a form of art. As a result, they capture relevant social opinions of the time and are encoded with history and culture. By interacting with players they force their audience to think critically about situations and to form opinions about the society around them. Games accomplish this through authorship and agency, which allows them record individual viewpoints.
“Let us make this a new age where we show our gratitude” (Pokemon X and Y). Video games are not quite as simple as people think. Bringing together the creative vision of one person or a few hundred people; they are large endeavors that require much time and talent. The resulting product is what you play; the art that is a video game. Seamlessly blending the ideas and talents of so many people into a moving story or narrative, where the story is told not solely through words or pictures, but through words and pictures. This is not solely for the enjoyment of the player, however. Video games also hold a special place as art, where those words and pictures come together as one in a beautiful way.
