Are you a horse fan? I read this book and fell in love with it. It is so magical how Estrela can see the past. Estrela has so much courage and action that you would want to be in her situation. The most important part is freedom because no won want to be put into slavery they just wanted to be free of all humanity. If you want a preview about this charter then you should read this right way. Estrela is magical because she can see the tiny horse, but none of the other horse can. Estrela use her magic to lead the herd to the sweet grasses, so her and her entire herd does not starve tell winter. Estrela has so much courage but it is hidden in the pages. When they are getting attacked by El medio Estrela gave the herd courage to jump the canyon
The word courage is a prime example of the Mirabal sisters. The Mirabal sisters show their courage by stepping up to the plate and looking fear right into its eyes. In spite of the sisters fears they find a way to fight through trials and tribulations. Since the Mirabal sisters were just ordinary people they were role models for women in the Dominican Republic and women around the world. Even though Minerva is the most valiant out of all her sisters, don’t let her make you think she isn’t the only courageous one in the family.
(Chapter 14,93)"It shows that she is brave because she wants to stay up all night so that she can protect her sisters and tried to purposely forget what she was told to protect her sisters. She also sacrificed her sleep to keep her sisters safe from the chupacabras. This is why her special characteristic is her bravery. This also shows how she uses her bravery to succeed in this part of the
After reading this excerpt from “Under the Feet of Jesus”, the reader can better understand how a protagonist’s character can develop throughout a text. At first, Estrella’s character can be described as immature and curious. However, towards the end of the text, Estrella’s character can be described as humble and understanding. This writer conveys this change in character using literary devices. Moreover, these devices include selection of detail, figurative language, and tone.
I chose the artwork “Kelly and the Red Horse” to represent the cultural frame. This detailed piece of Australian art shows the outback, mountains, skies and trees. It also falls under the cultural frame because of its mountainous, Australian scenery. The cultural qualities of this painting is what makes it fall under this category.
Sadie was walking back to the barn, worrying about Lucky. She knew that Lucky would go back to the barn but still had a strange feeling in her stomach. It had been 10 minutes about a quarter of a mile through. Sadie was thinking, yes only a couple of minutes home. Sadie also thought the faster she got home, the less stress she will feel as she can tell her parents about her whereabouts and what happened. She also thought that her parents will have a search for lucky.
stubborn she is in staying in them: “For days, she went silent with rage” (10). This reveals just how far Estrella will venture to seethe in her emotions— and so much so, in fact, that her mother “believed her a victim of the evil eye” (11). To be in one emotion, and to not explain it to others, speaks volumes about Estrella— she is persistent about how she feels and will stay this way for days. In other words, this use of selective detail portrays how Estrella is quick to swell with passion about how she feels— by “becoming very angry,” merely because she saw Perfecto’s tools and assumed it was a secret being kept from her, her character is portrayed as someone who easily feels upset, or moody, by things that she may not even know for certain. To reword, through selection of detail, Viramontes is able to develop Estrella’s character because she describes particular instances where Estrella’s fragile temper is aroused by unfamiliar, or unfair, concepts or objects. This use of selective detail furthers her character because it conveys how Estrella is stubbornly consumed by her emotions even when she does not have the full story.
The tone of the passage notes the small victories that Estrella takes part in. While first angered by the tools so that “she was silent with rage” she is able to overcome it. Estrella could not make any sense of the chalky lines on the blackboard and did not understand the shapes and functions of the tools. However, after Perfecto Flores taught her the name and what they were used for she was no longer angry. As she now had an understanding of the tools she was also able to understand the letters. When she came to understand the tools, “that was when she began to read,” she was able to read and understand as she could not
The book “American Slavery 1619-1877” is a book on slavery unlike anything I have ever read. Most books on slavery look at it through extremely common perspectives and have flooded the nonfiction genre. However, the author, Peter Kolchin, decides to show the reader that his studies on slavery are different from any previous study done. He brings up a lot of arguments that were actually thought to be unarguable, and shuts them down. It is miraculous to think that someone finally got to the very root of American slavery and can finally give Americans of today a real feel for the reasons behind slavery.
Although the author makes emotional connection, she also presents information that you would find in a history textbook in a new light. Anderson does this by incorporating terms that may be learned in history class such as loyalist, indentured servant, and regiment into a plot. For example, Isabel was befriended by an indentured servant, she worked for a loyalist family, and her friend was apart of a rebel regiment. It’s interesting to see the author eloquently incorporate these terms into a historical fiction story. This book has increased my interest in the subject matter of slavery. The book has peaked my interest, because it just gives the reader a look at what life was like for slaves. The abuse and injustice just shows how important rights are and that they should not be taken for granted. This book ignited a fire inside of
In the book Journey of Crazy Horse written by Joseph. M. Marshall III, we learn about a man who draws on a Native American oral tradition to carefully unfold the life of Crazy Horse as a storyteller would. The result is a vivid biography that acknowledges the author's boyhood hero. With more than 300 pages, you learn a lot about Crazy Horse in this book. You can learn about Crazy Horse, the man who "reluctantly answered the call to serve".
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” - Atticus Finch. Harper Lee in her book To Kill a Mockingbird describes courage. Minerva, who is arguably the reason the Mirabal sisters became revolutionaries, was the first to show courage by changing against the evil Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic between 1930 and 1961. Julia Alvarez shows the brutality in the Dominican Republic under Trujillo’s dictatorship, and the resistance formed by the Mirabal sisters. The Mirabal sisters eventually become the fighting force and face of the resistance. Amongst them, Minerva is the leader of the sisters as well as their inspiration to join, being the first to join herself. In Julia Alvarez’s novel, In the
This book is highly recommended not just by the previous Selection fans but also the many editorial reviews have suggested this book, like ALA Books said “A real page-turner. Romance, royalty, and revolution in a reality-show format serve Cass’ boldly rendered heroine well in her quest for justice and love.”This book is a page turner and will change our perspective of looking at things, making decisions. The One has given the readers insight on how when making decisions they should care about it affecting others, like in the book each time America makes a foolish mistake it doesn't just affects her relationship with Maxon, but it also affects the way the citizens of Illéa view and respect her. This book is recommended to all people of any age,
In the novel, Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson, a 67 year-old man named Trond who lives in solitude in Norway reflects back on the summer of 1948 where several significant events changed his life. It follows his progression of growing up and starting to understand more about the people and surroundings that revolve around his life and how they’ve shaped him into becoming a mature and wise man. Eventually, he realizes the truth that growing up is inevitable and accepts the fact that things will never be the same again. In Out Stealing Horses, Petterson uses the motif and imagery of water to show how Trond’s familiarity and interactions with the river reflects his gradual process of maturing from a innocent boy into a stronger man.
“Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say, and say it hot”(Lawrence). In 1926 D.H lawrence wrote one of his most famous stories, Rocking Horse Winner. This story is about a boy who gambles to make money that will make his mom happy. He ends up getting addicted to gambling, and this addiction ended up being extremely fatal to the boy. In life we go to the extreme to make the ones we love around us happy just like this little boy in the story did. This story betrays many important messages, three of the messages presented by D.H Lawrence are, economic problems, luck and unluck, and raising a child without damaging them.
Eyes are considered to be the window to the soul. In many different cultures, eyes are seen with utmost importance. Even in the Bible, eyes are seen as core parts of the human body “ The eye is the lamp of the body” ( Matthew 6:22). In the Rocking-Horse Winner, special precedence is put on the eyes,as eyes are mentioned 21 times in the entire story. Eyes are distinguished as a core motif in The Rocking Horse Winner, as eyes represent the character's emotional state and physical state throughout the story.
