The historians that argue the achievements of the Hellenic world would not be known if not for the spreading of ideas by Alexander and those who followed him is incorrect, in my opinion. The Hellenic period Included the spreading of writing Greek, philosophy and culture through the establishment of colonies and trading posts. The Hellenic ideas and culture flourished and spread without the delusion that came during the Hellenistic period. Had Alexander live to fulfill the vision he had for the Empire he had created, I may have a different opinion, but that the Hellenic culture was already established in the places it needed to be to make sure it was not lost to time. Specifically, Rome in all its forms had a more lasting effect at spreading
Slavery has been a big part of American history ever since the first slave trade back in 1526, when many Africans set sale to the ‘New World’ from Europe. The reason why Americans looked to purchase slaves is also stated by some historians, “...the Americas looked to Africa as the preferred source of labor because slaves could be procured so cheaply here” (Inikori and Engerman, 30.) After realizing their benefits, they began to ship in more and more slaves from Africa. This was known as the Transatlantic slave trade and it lasted all the way from 1526 to 1867. During this time about a total of 12.5 million slaves had been shipped from Africa in all parts of the
Ancient Greek culture had major influences on today’s culture; some of these influences include mathematics, government, art and architecture; they even did research in the field of medicine. Many cultures and religions have adapted their ideas from the ancient Greeks. Without the influences of the ancient Greeks our society wouldn’t be the way it is today. The Greek culture lasted from around 776 BCE to 146 BCE (though it is argued to have begun around 1000 BCE), during this time they invented many technologies and refined old technologies. These things are what caused the ancient Greek culture to be such a powerful influence on western society today.
‘I entreat you, by your life, by your knees, by your parents, do not let the dogs feed on me by the ships of the Achaians… give my body to be taken home again, so that the Trojans and the wives of the Trojans may give me in death my rite of burning’ (22.338-343). This heart wrenching plea represents nearly the final words uttered by Hektor upon his death at the hands of Achilles. Hektor, who recently boasted of his martial prowess, vowing just moments before to do ‘some big thing first, that men to come shall know of it’ (22.305), is reduced to begging before his killer for the basic privilege of an honorable burial. In this moment of his famous Iliad, Homer offers a cynical reflection on human life and the social constructs mortals establish, especially the idea of the ‘heroic code’ that was so prominent during the Golden Age of Greece. Demonstrably, he implies throughout the work that since all humans are destined to die and memories have limited effect after death, the entire concept of the ‘heroic code’- and to a certain extent, conviction in worldly systems instead of personal beliefs- are pointless given the natural chaos of the world and man’s ultimate fate.
Civilization is the period in which humans develop and organize their community in an advanced form in different aspects. As time was fleeting the ancient Greek civilization was starting to shape and adopt many alterations which started to center a more stable community. Just as the Greeks there were other civilizations developing some similar to the Greeks attributes and some differing them in different aspects.
Through his conquest as king of Macedonia he managed to spread Greek culture which is referred to as the time period of Hellenism. Macedonia, in which he was born, fell under the Hellenistic circle. This being the reason why he was so knowledgeable of Greek culture and made it a part of life in every land he conquered during his reign. The Greeks disfavored Macedonia as told by Diodorus of Sicily, but that has not much to do with the fact that Alexander envied the Greek culture. Even though his vast empire fell apart after his death, his name still lives on as one of, and if not, the greatest conquer to ever live. His admiration of Greek culture has had an influential impact on the world since and seeing in which it has is truly remarkable. His advocation of Grecian cultural lifestyle and civilization has, and will continue to echo around the globe for many years to
In conclusion Alexander was very successful in his conquest to conquer all of ancient Greece thanks to his father Philip. Without Philip Alexander wouldn’t have been educated on the Iliad, wouldn’t have been trained military style at a young age, or have his men to conquer anything. All of these things were very important factors of Alexander’s motivates to move forward with his conquest and become a great god for all of his success and have the title throughout history as Alexander the
Erudition, innovation, sophistication, every word and thousands more are associated with the name Greece. Steeped in complex lore, mythology, and history, it stands as a turning point in European culture. Its ideas and inventions are responsible for shaping many future events and turning the tide in science, art, and philosophy. At one time a group of city states, Greece was dominated by two centers a cultural one, Athens, and a military one, Sparta. Athens is probably best known for its playwrights, its philosophers, and the Acropolis. Sparta on the other hand is remembered as a military marvel where courage was the highest virtue. Legend tells that it had no walls for its best and only defense was its citizens’ valor
Ancient Greeks made many influential contributions to western civilization such as in the areas of philosophy, art and architecture, math and science.
In ancient times, the Greek and Roman Empires were the leading figures in their world. In these civilizations, the world saw continuous new inventions of items, thoughts, and ways of living. As ancient Greece and Rome grew, the characteristics of culture grew as well, with cities, arts and architecture, technology and science, social structure, government, religion and philosophy, and writing and literature becoming more diverse and modernized. Though they began nearly 3,000 years ago, the Greek and Roman Empires’ advancements still impact the modern world in all areas of culture, particularly in government, religion and technology.
Had he not conquered Persia and lands extending to Africa and India, the Greek culture might have just been localized to Greece (USHistory, 3), and the tremendous Greek influence we see in our society today would not be so prevalent and obvious (Freeman, 323). Alexander’s conquests allowed new trade routes from the east to the west between Europe and Asia. This increased trade and also helped the spread of culture and religion (Clark, 2). Widespread use of the Greek language led to more development and appreciation of Greek art, philosophy, and drama (Clark, 1). The impact of Alexander’s conquests was that Greek culture was spread over a vast area. This included their language, philosophy, artistic style, and architectural elements throughout the regions they now ruled (ConnectEd, 4). Alexander’s conquest helped the spread of Christianity because the New Testament was written in Greek, and since most people of the region knew the common language of Greek, it was easy for the religious teachings to spread (Freeman, 327). One could make an argument that the Christian religion would not have succeeded in becoming widespread without the spread of Hellenistic culture. It would likely have remained a local phenomenon (Freeman,

The Hellenic and Hellenistic shift was a turning point for Greek culture. The Hellenic are those who lived in ancient Greece before Alexander the Great. The Hellenistics are those who lived in the period after Alexander the Great’s conquest. Alexander the Great was a mighty and strong leader of the Greek people. The people that were under his following respected him greatly. We can tell the drastic changes that occurred after Alexander Great was leader by the art, philosophies, and religion. The Hellenistic Changes that occurred showed us that the Hellenistic priorities transformed drastically from what the Hellenic ways were like.
