Gun control laws should regulate production, distribution, ownership and use of firearms by civilians. Gun control laws are not intended to dispossess law abiding citizens of licensed firearms but to intervene on reckless use of firearms that cause harm to the public. Gun control should also make it difficult for criminals to access firearms. Armed civilians have in many instances deterred acts of crime from being instigated by scaring away criminals. Nonetheless, gun laws can only be described as immensely lax. This essay seeks to argue for the enactment of strict gun control laws by highlighting the dangers posed by guns in the hands of members of the public.
Gun Control For many years there have been arguments over gun control, and if there needs to be more regulations or even ban them. I do not think that banning firearms or adding more regulations would help; if anything it would make things worse.
The issue over the interpretation of the Second Amendment still prevails as one of the most controversial issues in the United States. The Constitution states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The question at hand is the proper definition of a “well-regulated militia” and should there be restrictions on the obtainment of lethal weapons. Ever since the year of 1960, gun violence has increased, costing an average of 30,000 deaths in the United States (Gun Violence is a Serious Problem). This astronomical amount of unnecessary deaths will continue to rise if nothing is done to stop the serious epidemic that continues to plague our
Recent incidents of gun violence have brought a new group of supporters against gun violence. Increasing support from the young people has significantly strengthened the gun control movement. For instance, thousands of students participated in a demonstration after the Parkland shooting, and this was one of the largest demonstrations by students in the US history (Holpuch, 2018). The students’ demonstration included a memorial for the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting. The youth-led campaign has been creating pressure for the government to act. According to Szekely (2018), the students’ participation in the demonstration against the killing of their fellows “has chipped away at legislative gridlock on the issue.”
An un-armed population will have a difficult time protecting itself from criminals that clearly do not care about laws and would most likely be more successful in committing a crime if their intended victims are incapable of defending themselves. While there are numerous reasons, including social, economic and mental
The average response time of a 911 call is 10 minutes. The response time of a .357 magnum is 1400 feet per second. The second amendment of the United States Constitution states, “the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed upon.” That right is now more than ever in jeopardy and we must continue to fight for it. Gun Control does not solve our nations problem of violence.
Crime and guns. The two seem to go hand in hand with one another. But are the two really associated? Do guns necessarily lead to crime? And if so do laws placing restrictions on firearm ownership and use stop the crime or protect the citizens? These are the questions many citizens and lawmakers are asking themselves when setting about to create gun control laws. The debate over gun control, however, is nothing new. In 1924, Presidential Candidate, Robert La Follete said, “our choice is not merely to support or oppose gun control but to decide who can own which guns under what conditions.” Clearly this debate still goes on today and is the very reason for the formation of gun control laws.
this thing on gun control is getting blown out of the water people are for it and people arent im one of the people who is not for gun control. The 2ed amendment of the united states was set in 1791 to give the citizens the right to bear arms for protection of them self and others around them that are not protected. yes people theses days have took it over the boarder with all the school shootings in stuff but do you people who are for gun control really think that this is gonna stop people from getting weapons i mean come on now you already have to go there all kinds of paper work to even own a gun thats resterd to you. weapons are all over the place there is no way you going to stop people getting them all you're gonna do is piss off all the hunters and people who obey the laws. theres is only one way you could ever get all guns off the streets and thats to kill all the citizens and demolish the us and i bet even then they will still be on the streets.
Firearms are involved in the deaths of more than 30,000 people in the U.S this year. The “Issue Overview…” by bloomberg, has a perspective of a writer on the gun issue, and “Famous Speech” by Emma Gonzalez, has an inside look on the issue of guns because she was
When our fore fathers first came to this land, they were oppressed by their rulers. These wise men decided to stage a revolt against their government and start a new one, with a set of rules, laws and rights. They did not stage this massive revolt by negotiation, but with bloodshed on both sides. When the revolt was over, they then decided to make a bill stating the basic rights that every man in the country could have. One of those being the right to keep and bear arms in order to protect their families, gather food, and preserve their rights from all threats.
Imagine a world where the government had complete control over every word a person says, and every move they make. If someone speaks out in anyway, they are imprisioned or executed. This isn’t that hard to imagine, as it has has happened over and over in history, and today in many countries. The problem is that the countries that this happens to, are countries that don’t have a guaranteed right for the people to protect themselves from the government. America wanted to set themselves apart. When the US officially pardoned from England, we drafted a bill of rights. The rights on there were rights that were not previously allowed to them by the oppressive country they escaped from. The only right that people seem to fight is the second amendment.
The 2nd Amendment is a sensitive issue for some. Guns don’t kill innocent people, the operators who are mentally insane do ; it is our constitutional right to own and bear arms. Although we have had the right to own and bear arms since the founding of the country, and only recently have it become a problem to some people. These people seem to fear their life and/or a loved one’s life and feels that gun control will make their life safer. With all of the recent mass shootings lately, the best, most simple option seems to be to take all guns away. This is not the solution we are looking for.
The United States’ homicide rate (5.9 deaths per 100,000 people as of 2005) is higher when compared to other countries: Sweden with 1.3, Canada with 1.5, and Australia with 1.3. To go along with these rates, America has a higher gun ownership with 39% when compared to Canada with 29.1%, Australia with 19.4% and Sweden with 15.1%. Many argue that these statistics prove the effectiveness of gun control. Fewer amount of guns equals less crime.
The truth is that people kill people, and a gun is just a gun that is used by people as a weapon. A gunshot involves movement and action to pull that trigger. When people say that gun control is good because guns are only made to kill, then why do they not question the people who pull that gun’s trigger. What would happen if instead of guns being banned, criminals were banned since they are the ones who commit the crimes? People who support gun control might say that gun control can help lower deaths, lower crimes, and most importantly save the innocent children and families. This, however, is false because gun control does not “save” or “protect” anyone, in fact, it might only end up harming people. Places that do not have gun control are
Gun rights “Guns, whether Remingtons or Glocks./ Come on man it ain't like I'm a slingin' 'em on the block./ I'm gonna tell you once and listen son./ As long as I'm alive and breathing,/ You won't take my guns./” (“Guns” by Justin Moore). This song shows how people express their rights to bear arms. It also creates a clear picture of how important Guns are to the American people. Some people believe it is unconstitutional for us to have them and is pointless. Some want some restrictions because of the shootings. As many of us know it our constitutional right and is used for a self defense mechanism against criminals when the police cannot respond fast enough.
