It seems as soon as Americans forget their own immigrant origins they start to feel that immigrants are bad for this country. From the Irish coming to escape the potato famine, to the Chinese coming in from the west to find work, and now Mexicans and Central Americans coming to the United States for a better life, many people have felt immigrants would take jobs from hard working U.S. citizens, but this is not true. America needs immigrant workers. Immigration benefits America because immigrants work hard, do the jobs many Americans do not want to do, and they add to the melting pot that is American culture. Immigrants are some of the hardest working people on the planet. They come from places that often have few jobs or poor pay and when they get to America they do not want a handout, they want the opportunity to improve their position in life. They know that they were not born with the advantages that a child born in America has: so they work to give their kids a better future. My grandparents, for example, immigrated from the Netherlands as newlyweds and immediately started working and raising a family. My grandfather worked as an accountant, then both he and my grandma got teaching degrees in America. …show more content…
Many of these jobs consist of long hours, and exposure to hot sun or cold rain, and do not pay extremely well. Some might say that immigrants are taking these jobs from legal citizens but that is not the case. Last year in North Carolina, The NCGA farm company needed 6,500 workers. The jobs were first offered to Americans, but only seven actually stayed with it through the entire season. Eventually all the other workers were immigrants. (Washington Post, May 15, 2013, Dylan Mathews) The truth is without immigrants the United States work force would not be able to keep up with the demand for workers with strong backs. The people that come to work our farms also bring their own culture with
It has been said that Immigration damage the economy. This is not true because foreigners help American economy to prosper. Immigration increases purchasing, and increases demand for labor. Immigration not only takes jobs, but also creates them. For instance, a man comes to America from Italy; this man opens a small Italian restaurant, this restaurant becomes prosper during the years. Five years later, this Italian man owns two more restaurants and employs twenty Americans. Similar stories, which help our economy, have happened from the beginning of the immigration times.
Since the immigrants came to the country, job employment has gone down and the Americans interpret that in a bad way because they think that the immigrants are taking away opportunities from them. Although job employment has gone down, that doesn't mean that it's ruining the chances Americans have to work, “We found little to no negative effect on overall wages and employment of native workers in the long term” (Preston). SInce immigrants are working so much, they create their own businesses. By creating their own company, they provide work for the Americans. It gives Americans another chance to find a job, “High skilled immigrants, especially in technology and science, who have come in larger numbers in recent years, had a significant “positive impact” on Americans with skills” (Preston). Immigrants give Americans the opportunity to find another job. If the immigrants were taking their jobs away, they wouldn't be hiring them to start out with. Americans are being payed full price and fairly, the immigrants are not favoring foreigners. Immigrants are more optimistic on taking on jobs that the Americans didn't
A common biased opinion on immigration is that immigrants coming to the United States are taking American jobs. According to the Immigration Policy Center, “research indicates there is little connection between immigrant labor and unemployment rates of native-born workers.” The jobs that immigrants are taking are the low-budget jobs that Americans do not want. They not only get less pay, but also less benefits in comparison to American workers. In fact, according to Forbes, “illegal immigrants actually raise wages for documented/native workers.” America is considered to be more productive when we have more trading partners, Undocumented workers with limited English skills allows more American workers
Former President Grover Cleveland once said, “Remember, remember always that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.” While this is true, the immigrants, who built this country, came legally. Immigrants create a diverse country and build up a great nation like America. On the other hand, illegal immigrants tear down a country economically. Illegal immigration to the United States creates a variety of problems that will only grow worse if not addressed by the federal government.
There has been a long standing debate that Immigrants are taking jobs away from the American people. Immigrants do not have to pay taxes, they get all the overtime and send all their money home instead of boosting our economy. These are some of the misconceptions that are backing the theory that immigrants are taking our jobs. The most astonishing amount of people being affected by immigration includes the poor, and uneducated; as well as the need to fix an immigration system, that is weak.
Immigration has been a burning issue lately, particularly after Donald Trump’s immigration ban in the United States of America. It has been a topic that families discuss every morning with breakfast. Despite many concerns related to immigration, it has several positive benefits that mostly outweighs the negativity. People bizarrely argue when it comes to immigration, but these arguments are primarily based on facts and ideas that are outdated or inconsistent and blindfold the positive aspect related to immigration. Many immigrants in the United States are good workers who don't depend upon any public welfare and mostly help in the overall development of the economy. As a country made by immigrants, we must not forget the fact that immigrants have helped to build cities and create a path of development form Google to iPhones (Gray & Furman, 2012). These facts are secluded, and some related arguments with different content have been repeated for years and continue. Immigrants have a lot to give the United States rather than to take, especially when it comes to economic terms.
Immigration is currently a hot topic within in the United States government. Currently the United States Congress is fighting to decide the fate of the Dreamers, and the Immigration bill DACA. Like many controversial issues within the government, the Democrats and Republicans are in a disagreement on what to do. Each article, examines a different take on the current immigration reform. Bier’s main argument is that individuals who are contributing to immigration reform are ignorant, that Immigrants are not hurting the American Labor market. The next article, I examined, was written by Eric Cantor; Cantor states that although the parties each have a high stake on the decision Congress makes on DACA, there must be a decision otherwise, the law will remain status quo. Next, we look at Gessen’s article, the main argument is that immigrants should not be looked at valuable or illegal, they should not have to be talented in order to be welcome within the United States. Lastly, Vargas, an undocumented Immigrant, discusses the difficulties of being illegal within the United States, yet still shines light on the positive influences he had throughout his childhood and time in America.
Since the last Presidential election, many arguments have been sparked on current immigration policy in the United States. Whether it be mayoral intervention on Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) raids, or deploying the National Guard to the US Mexico Border, immigration has been at the forefront of the latest greatest political kerfuffles. Politicians and lawmakers have argued for decades on the viability of laws and regulations protecting, as well as directing, immigration in the United States. According to the American Immigration Council, federal law only allows for 675,000 immigrants a year. Realistically, however, this is nowhere close to the number of aliens that entire the United States each year. Unfortunately, current immigration
Immigrants who come over are looking for jobs as a first priority so they can provide for there family. There are not very many jobs out there today because there's so many in poverty and some are laid off their jobs because of a younger generation so in that case many U.S. citizens are looking for jobs. When these illegal immigrants come over and start applying and looking for jobs and get them it sets a lot of americans
On December 11nth 2017, New York’s Time Square had a would-be terrorist attack when 27 year old Akayed Ullah didn’t properly detonate the homemade pipe bomb. The attempted bombing happened during the town most dreaded time, the rush hour in Times Square. The bomb did not kill anyone but he had injured himself and thankfully no other person was injured, just a few people had headaches and ringing ears. The attack was a retaliation act for the US Military aggressiveness to the Islamic state. He said it was inspired by ISIS, but he had no actual contact with anyone from the group. He made the pipe bomb by a metal pipe and explosive powder; he ignited the bomb with a Christmas light, matches, and a nine-volt battery. Thankfully the bomb didn’t do what he had wanted it to but it’s still an attempted act of terrorism.
With President Trump’s recent pledge to be harsher on illegal immigration, coupled with the rise in arrests and deportations made, my nightmare of finding my parents in detention and awaiting deportation is solidifying. For these last couple of months, while the house sleeps, I imagine different scenarios. Assuming I was still a minor, my younger brother and I would be sent with my parents. Dreams of attending a top-rate American university would be muted. What would happen if they were deported once I was eighteen? Assuming I was already in college, I would keep my brother and myself in America, taking legal guardianship of him. If that happened, I would have to transfer from my university to one closer to home and start working to maintain
The Article Immigration Policy: Should the U.S. government take stricter measures to limit illegal immigration (February 9, 2017), focuses on whether the U.S. should adopt stricter measures for illegal immigration. Supporters believe that illegal immigrants pose a threat to national security. Undocumented immigrants are not in the system, so their criminal records are inaccessible. Additionally, supporters believe that immigrants take the jobs of Americans. Companies tend to give immigrants jobs because they will work for cheap wages. However, the opponents of the law believe stricter measures for illegal immigrants shouldn’t be done because most of the country's technological breakthroughs are due to immigrants. Opponents believe that immigrants help the economy because they take the jobs that not many workers take, such as farming or physical work. Immigration policy argument will continue until there is common ground established between everyone whether to there should be stricter measures or another way for them to become documented.
When America’s economy is down it hurts the morale of everyone in it. The push to continue working, the drive to fight through the economic drought, and the pursuit to better oneself are all decreased when the morale of the country is tainted. Immigrants help bring a positive morale. Their goal is to make a difference for themselves and the country around them. They come to our country trying to pick up jobs and start jobs. This can greatly help boost morale. When one has somebody in their community working hard it affects everyone around them. Especially if one has an immigrant in their community working harder than that person is, that person will feel obliged to work harder for their own country.
Immigration is such a complicated topic. I really didn’t realize everything that went into it until I got to college and was able to vote myself. Although I have written thousands of words on this topic, I still am unsure if I can for certain say that I completely agree with one side of the argument or the other. What I do believe is the fact that immigration is a touchy issue, especially within the United States, and each case should be looked at differently.
Illegal immigration has supplied the work force with what many would consider to be cheap labor work. Cheap labor work is basically where people are working at a lower pay than the average working american. The cheap labor work force has many job slots needing to be filled. These immigrants coming through are the workers who are helping fill these spots. An article talking about immigrant workers in the U.S workforce says, ”The U.S. population is aging as rapidly as the baby boom cohort enters old age and retirement. As a result, the labor force will increasingly depend upon immigrants and their children to replace current workers and fill new jobs.” (Singer). This quote
