It seems as soon as Americans forget their own immigrant origins they start to feel that immigrants are bad for this country. From the Irish coming to escape the potato famine, to the Chinese coming in from the west to find work, and now Mexicans and Central Americans coming to the United States for a better life, many people have felt immigrants would take jobs from hard working U.S. citizens, but this is not true. America needs immigrant workers. Immigration benefits America because immigrants work hard, do the jobs many Americans do not want to do, and they add to the melting pot that is American culture. Immigrants are some of the hardest working people on the planet. They come from places that often have few jobs or poor pay and when they get to America they do not want a handout, they want the opportunity to improve their position in life. They know that they were not born with the advantages that a child born in America has: so they work to give their kids a better future. My grandparents, for example, immigrated from the Netherlands as newlyweds and immediately started working and raising a family. My grandfather worked as an accountant, then both he and my grandma got teaching degrees in America. …show more content…

Many of these jobs consist of long hours, and exposure to hot sun or cold rain, and do not pay extremely well. Some might say that immigrants are taking these jobs from legal citizens but that is not the case. Last year in North Carolina, The NCGA farm company needed 6,500 workers. The jobs were first offered to Americans, but only seven actually stayed with it through the entire season. Eventually all the other workers were immigrants.
