“Lets not call cancer patients as patients, they are cancer fighters. They are brave hearts” - Vikrmn, Gura. Nowadays, you hear more and more people getting cancer(13). It is a stress that many people worry about. You worry if one of your parents will get it. You pray your children don't’ get it. It’s a constant worry. You watch television and you can get this horrible monster from microwaving your food, drinking bottled water, carrying your phone in your pocket, using deodorant, coloring your hair and much more. Finding a cure for cancer would be a prayer answered for many.
Treatments for Cancer Cancer is a disease in which cells multiply out of control and gradually build a mass of tissue called a tumor. There has been a large amount of research dedicated to the treatment and cure of cancer. Several types of treatments have
Radiation therapy is commonly used as a proven and widely accepted way to treat cancer. The American Cancer Society attests to this because of the extensive research they have done in this field. High-energy radiation damages a cell’s deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). When a cell divides, its DNA splits. According to the Mayo Clinic, radiation therapy is sometimes given with curative intent (that is, with the hope that the treatment will cure cancer, either by eliminating a tumor, preventing cancer recurrence, or by both). In such cases, radiation therapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, or all three. Radiation therapy may also be given with palliative intent. Palliative treatments are not intended to cure. Instead, they are meant to relieve certain symptoms and reduce
Cancer. We all know someone who has suffered from it or has passed away because of it. Cancer now affects one in every three people, and is the second highest cause of death in the United States. For decades, the medical community has been on the hunt for a cure for cancer, and have been subjected to intense ridicule from the public because of a lack of progression toward a possible cure. In recent years, many scientists, doctors, researchers, and the general public have come to believe that the cure for cancer is being suppressed because of this lack of progress. Those who say it is suppressed claim that the drugs used to treat cancer actually cause cancer, making a patient sicker and sicker. As a result, the patients are forced to spend

Bowel Cancer The bowels are the intestines, consisting of the small intestine (the section between the stomach and the appendix) and the large intestine (from the appendix to the anus). The large intestine is divided into the long colon and a short rectum, just before the anus. Two thirds of bowel cancers occur in the colon and one third in the rectum, with very few in the small intestine. Who is at risk of bowel cancer? =============================== There are about 35,000 new cases each year in the UK. More than 80% of
Brandon Stanton, the mind behind Humans of New York, has taken a couple weeks off from shooting in the streets of New York City to take photos and gather stories within the Pediatrics Department of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Center in New York City.
Surgery. Radiation. Chemotherapy. Repeat. The treatments that are supposed to cure you bring you closer to the brink of death than you have ever been before. At the final stages, many people pray for death to relieve their suffering. This high tech form of torture should not be how it ends anyone. I watched my 79-year-old grandmother endure these treatments over the course of six months as she slowly slipped into the abyss that is death. By the end, she was no longer the same grandmother that would wake up early whenever we slept over to make us milkshakes and pancakes for breakfast, no longer the same grandmother that seemed to know everything there was to know. This is what people go through every day. Individuals, families, loved ones, they
Introduction How would one finish one’s life if he or she were only given six months to live? Brittany Maynard and Kara Tippetts answered this question in two very different ways. Both were too young to face death, but they could not escape their realities. Plagued by terminal cancer, they would suffer in a considerable amount of pain, ultimately ending in death. Maynard tried to lighten her experience by ending her life with medication to escape the full reality. News broadcasts and magazines highly publicized Maynard’s decision. On the other hand, Tippetts chose to live until her life naturally ended. However, her story was documented on the radio; in a book, The Hardest Peace; and her blog, “Mundane Faithfulness.” Although Maynard and Tippetts both suffered terminal cancer, they dealt with their circumstances, convictions, and choices differently.
Have you ever considered that your doctor may have been a professional executioner in a previous life? Or if he’s into S&M in his private life? I’m quite sure mine owns a flogging whip or two and has “Bite me” as a safe phrase. Otherwise why would he suggest I go
There are some trials that are being worked on around the world right now. For example, in 2013 a trial of an experimental treatment for advanced malignant melanoma took place in London at the Royal Marsden Hospital. One of the patients received three intravenous infusions, and after the second one the lumps that had been in her throat and breast had vanished. While those results were extraordinary, it is by far not the only time to have happened. There have been many similar trials that had the same results as this one. These new anticancer drugs are being called cancer inhibitors and some scientists are saying it could be the “turning point in cancer treatment.” Instead of
Cancer is a worldwide issue that has taken the lives of numerous people we know and love. These cancer patients went through more than just the health issues. They went through many sleepless nights, day after day of not feeling well, and the pain of all the treatments that followed. Each person went through more financial burdens than any one person should have to go through. They went through much more than anyone should ever have to experience. There are thousands of different kinds of cancer out there today, but one thing that all these cancers have in common is the fact that they all cause significant financial burdens, which should not be an issue. Not even one of them is easy to go through nor is it easy for one to have to get up and
Introduction This essay discusses the case of John, a 65-year-old male who has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) and is receiving his last cycle of chemotherapy post-surgery. The essay critically discusses the recommended follow-up regimen after curative treatment for CRC and signs and symptoms associated with CRC recurrences. Additionally, survivorship issues that are experienced by cancer survivors with strategies to prevent the issues are discussed. Moreover, relevant health education for optimum self-management and communication strategies that facilitate effective education is discussed.
Nursing is a field of practice that continues to evolve through the use of evidence-based practice. According to Schmidt and Brown, evidence-based practice is conceptualized as making decisions or practicing care by utilizing the best available evidence, considering the preferences of the patients, and using the best clinical judgment (2015). One of the biggest challenge facing the treatment and management of cancer patients is chemotherapy-induced nausea (Escobar et al. 2015). The problem’s morbidity is significant, and it undermines the patient’s quality of life (Escobar et al. 2015). Nurses and other healthcare professionals should utilize research evidence through EBP to improve practice based on the findings of their studies (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Therefore, one of the major concerns for nurses and healthcare researchers should be to understand the incidence of nausea among the chemotherapy patients with the view to solve the problem.
Radiation Therapy vs. Chemotherapy Cancer Radiation therapy focuses more a single part of the body, sends energy waves to a specific part of the body, and has a lasting effect on the skin. Chemotherapy is a drug that goes through the entire body and does not focus on one part
