Argumentative Essay: How Cheerleading Is A Sport

Cheerleading as a Sport Cheerleading is often discussed as to whether or not is it classified as a sport. Everyone has varying opinions on this topic going both ways. I believe with the risks that are associated with cheerleading that it should be considered a sport. I will provide research that defends my side and some legal cases associated with cheerleading. First off, what does it actually mean to be classified as a sport? According to The Women’s Sports Foundation these are the elements that define a sport:
“It must be a physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of mass, contesting against or with an opponent, it must be governed by rules that explicitly define the time, space, and purpose of the contest so a winner can be declared, and acknowledgement that the primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants” (Lauchaire).
Cheerleading meets all those classifications because the participants preform stunts, are competing against other teams, and have a time limit and score sheets. Whether cheerleaders are supporting their team or competing they are showing off their athletic skills through jumps, stunts, chants and dance all to gain a response from the crowd (Staffordshire University). The cheerleaders there are mostly preforming at football and basketball games and don’t actually go to competitions. Their stunts aren’t as big or dramatic as those from big high schools. Some schools have greater opportunities than others do but that doesn’t mean those other schools aren’t as good. Boys also play a big role into the idea of cheerleading not being a sport.
