Animal Experimentation Animal experimentation is very cruel and inhumane and must be stopped, but some people argue that it is a better method then testing on humans. More than 100 million animals are killed each year in laboratories for biology lessons, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. Of the people that think it’s bad to test on animals, they believe that some substances may never be used for anything useful. Of the people that think it’s okay to test on animals, they believe that it contributes to many cures and treatments that save many human lives. To start off, people that think it’s bad to test on animals believe that some substances may never be used therefore, they believe that animals are just dieing in vain because no direct benefit occurred. It’s bad because these animals are receiving tests for substances for human use that will never actually see public consumption and use. Alka Chandna writer from The Korea Times says that, “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that nine out of 10 drugs that test as safe and effective in animals are found to be either unsafe or ineffective in humans. Drugs that effectively treat artificially induced cancers in mice and strokes in monkeys, for example, don't work in humans. Part of the reason for this failure is that all animals are different ― genetically, anatomically, metabolically and so on ― and results obtained from tests on other animals simply can't be reliably applied to us.” We as people can never compare ourselves to animals or any living thing because we aren’t genetically the same and therefore it puts us humans at risk because there could be something wrong with the medicines and prescriptions and cause problems for us in our bodies. It sucks for the animals that have to go through all this because some scientists in the laboratories doing research do believe that we are the same as animals and some tests might actually work. But unfortunately they don’t always and therefore, animals die because of these
Most individuals would be saddened knowing that animals were being harshly experimented on for human benefits. The testing of animals is deemed to be cruel and inhumane. However animal testing has saved thousands of humans lives. Some believe the sacrifice is worth the gains, but others disagree and suggest other testing methods. Ultimately, the question that arises on many different occasions, is if animals should be experimented on, or not.
The first argument claims that animal research plays a vital role in virtually every major medical advances in this last century for both human health and veterinary health (Trull, 2014). The first premise says that animal research was a vital role for all medical advances, which is fact-based. However, it is not true because there are medical discoveries that are founded without the use of animal testing such as clinical research. The second premise states that medical treatments have advanced in the last century, which is fact based. This is true because there are medical breakthroughs of different discoveries throughout the time from the help of animal testing. Therefore, the conclusion states that animal research contribute for both human health and veterinary health. The fallacy used for this argument is appeal to
For many years, the field of science has used animals in medical experiments worldwide, because of this innocent animals are being killed everyday. They are being tested with new drugs, new treatments, and by many makeup companies. Connecticut recently celebrated the passage of the “Beagle Freedom Law”, a law that requires laboratories to work with charities and rescue groups to find homes for research cats and dogs. Animals are being tested so humans do not have to be but animal tests do not reliably predict results in human beings, although animals are the closest thing to humans. Most experiments involving animals are flawed, wasting the lives of innocent animal subjects. Over 100 million animals suffer a year from testing. Testing animals is a lot more expensive than alternative methods and it is wasting government research dollars. Animal testing is not only a bad idea, but it is also inhuman and it should not be tolerated. The FDA should stop allowing animal testing. An animal does not give out the same results on a test than a human would.
Animals and humans are so alike yet so very different. “Less than 2% of human illnesses are ever seen in animals. Over 98% never affects animals.” Is stated on Petas official web page. The food and drug administration also states that 92/100 drugs pass animal tests and fail in humans. I just find it insanely unhelpful (Animal testing) 106,000 deaths a year still happen due to medical drugs that were animal tested, and that’s just in America. That’s not even mentioning the cost of all this suffering. According to many NIH documents, over 6 million dollars can be
Regardless of the devastating facts behind animal testing, supporters of using laboratory animals argue that without animal testing it would be hard for researchers to guarantee that drugs and medical procedures are safe for use on humans (“Update: Animal Testing”). They are ignoring the animals’ well-being. If scientists were dissecting live humans, people would be disgusted and call that murder. Animals and people may look different, but we are both living things. Animals are just unable to speak for themselves, so scientists choose to treat them like inanimate objects, as if their
For centuries humans have dedicated their time and research to animal experimentation. A large number of these animals are being utilized and taken from their homes involuntarily. They are abused, mishandled and harmed for our own benefit to create products such as cosmetic supplies, vaccines, and medication.
Animal testing has been going on for years; however, few question the ethics of testing medicines that would cure human diseases on animals. Various animals being tested in labs and cruelly force them to be a host of harmful diseases negatively affect their health. Animal testing is cruel and unusual punishment and should discontinue. Animal experimentation is a subject that many know of but don’t know much about. Although it is a big topic, people still don’t pay much attention to it because of their lack of information. Experimenting is a cruel process that causes many innocent animals to suffer. Many cases of violations towards experimenting have been found as well. Testing on animals is unnecessary when laying down the
Over one million animals are burned, immobilized, poisoned, and tortured in US labs every year (DoSomething.org). Animal testing is considered a very controversial topic that evolves to protesting rather large companies, and also leads to boycotting a specific brand that is known to test on animals. Animals should not be used for testing products because it is cruel to the animals, there are now new ways to test products, and animals are very different from humans so they are not accurate results.
“Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year” (11 Facts). Animal testing is a very flawed creation in today’s world. This innovation has caused much harm to many animals while also hurting the opinions of animal activists around the world. Animal testing is also known as the use of animals in experiments and development projects usually to determine toxicity, dosing and efficacy of test drugs before proceeding to human clinical trials (Biology Online). The use of animal testing has been around for throughout all of history, it also carries its disadvantages as they diminish the lives of many animals along with their unspoken opinion while also having some advantages, and lastly this notion is very expensive (Scutti).
One reason that animal testing is horrible is that animals are not able to have a say about being tested on. Animals are not able to specifically say if they are in discomfort. Most of the time they are put through tests that can and will cause severe pain to them. Researchers discriminate against animals because they are not able to maintain the same cognitive abilities that humans have because they cannot speak, or have moral judgment, (Con Animal, par. 10). There is no need for about 56 billion animals to die from failed experimental testing. The majority of research animals used are killed during or after the experiments. Their lives are forcibly taken for poor research that could have been fixed with the proper information, (Con Animal, par. 9). Researchers use too many animals for testings whether it is for cosmetic or medical reasons, that will cost the
Millions of animals die each year in the U.S. Many of these animals have been through an awful lot. The reason behind these animal deaths is because of the people experimenting on them in order to find cures to things or find things that have not been found. Each one of these experiments contributes to the deaths of these innocent animals, that is why animals should not be tested on.
Animals are used by scientists to develop research for new medications and experiments daily. The Humane Society is working to decrease the use of animals in laboratories by promoting the advancement of affective alternative approaches. Animal testing provides a useful model for treatments of diseases and possible cures. According to the US-based foundation of Biomedical Research, animal testing has made a major advance within the last century- for veterinary health and humans. The practice of using animals for testing has been debated for many decades. Is it morally right or wrong to use animals during experiments? Does federal law ensure that animals used in research are treated humanely? When considering the benefits of animal testing,
Each year millions of animals are killed due to animal testing. Also, many more are used each year in animal testing and make it out alive but, some may not make it do to how far they go on the experiments that they are conducting. Animals are used to test many different products and one of those major products is cosmetics. They also are used to test medications and certain sicknesses to see what effects will happen to humans. Many people are for this and there are many who are completely against it. Also, people are starting to look into animal testing because of the cruelty that animals are being put through (Ferdowsian and Beck). More and more people want to end animal testing and put a stop to it. Many years ago animal testing was also starting to make people wonder if it was the correct thing to do. Some scientists were also starting to think the same as the others and wanted to stop it. At one point they had a meeting with many scientists about how animal testing keeps rising and how they are going to slow it down and possibly stop it (Ferdowsian and Beck). Animal testing is harmful to animals and should be used only on certain medications because there are new alternatives.
Observation and experimentation are how we as humans have been able to learn more about ourselves and the world and universe we live in. One of the most common methods of experimentation is animal testing. However, there are controversies surrounding animal testing. There are some that believe animal testing to be cruel and overdone, advocating for the eradication of the practice and further reliance alternative research methods. Groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and other animal rights advocates fall in this category. There are some that believe animal testing to be an invaluable resource and should continue, such as some scientists and research groups. However, there appears to me to be a consensus that is closer to the middle: the belief and understanding that while there are benefits to animal testing, there are flaws in the practice and there should be changes to increase its efficacy while we simultaneously explore alternate testing methods. Many scientists and the National Institute of Health (NIH) subscribe to this idea. I aim to explore the benefits, problems, and implications of animal testing in order to reach a more informed conclusion about a position that is most validated by the information I have used.
Animal testing, although a controversial topic, affects a great deal of scientists and the work force in the agriculture field. This topic has proven difficult to communicate to one another about because there are individuals that believe animals should have certain rights and others believe that animals have no rights. Our group wanted to research this topic because we want to gain knowledge and become more understanding toward the people on both sides of the spectrum. Digging more into the research we found that cosmetics, medical use, and food are the most widely used methods for experimentation. With these research fields, people are finding ways to appeal to the ethics of the modern-day consumer.
