However animal testing has saved thousands of humans lives. Some believe the sacrifice is worth the gains, but others disagree and suggest other testing methods. Ultimately, the question that arises on many different occasions, is if animals should be experimented on, or not.

The first argument claims that animal research plays a vital role in virtually every major medical advances in this last century for both human health and veterinary health (Trull, 2014). The first premise says that animal research was a vital role for all medical advances, which is fact-based. However, it is not true because there are medical discoveries that are founded without the use of animal testing such as clinical research. The second premise states that medical treatments have advanced in the last century, which is fact based. This is true because there are medical breakthroughs of different discoveries throughout the time from the help of animal testing. How would you like to know that this was tested on animals? If you are unaware Vioxx caused over 100,000 people to suffer severe heart attacks. Yet Vioxx was extremely successful in the animal test trials. Doesn’t that show you how different us animals and humans are, and how pointless this dangerous routine is? Now how do you feel to know that animals are also being killed everyday because of animal testing? In one test run on average of the LD50 test, more than 50 percent of the animals die. The LD50 test is a test that forced 60-200 animals to do this. How would you feel if a rabbit, like a pet you own, was getting force fed this? Nowadays scientist limited this test to 6-10 animals, but that’s just this test. I still believe no animal, should die this way whether it’s cosmetic, medical, or everyday chemicals like paint. For centuries humans have dedicated their time and research to animal experimentation. A large number of these animals are being utilized and taken from their homes involuntarily. They are abused, mishandled and harmed for our own benefit to create products such as cosmetic supplies, vaccines, and medication.

Over one million animals are burned, immobilized, poisoned, and tortured in US labs every year (DoSomething.org). Animal testing is considered a very controversial topic that evolves to protesting rather large companies, and also leads to boycotting a specific brand that is known to test on animals. Animals should not be used for testing products because it is cruel to the animals, there are now new ways to test products, and animals are very different from humans so they are not accurate results.

Maybe that they could all be common house pets, but it could also be that they are some of the animals that are commonly tested on for biomedical purposes as stated by the Humane Society. In the topic of using animals for biomedical research there are two definitive sides. Those opposed to animal testing state that it is unacceptable and unnecessary due to the fact that it only leads to the torture and death of millions of animals. Those supporting this animal testing believe that it is a key benefactor to advances in the medicinal industry. Animal testing is the necessary evil that helps further society’s knowledge in the biomedical field.

According to “Breakthroughs Might Mean the End of Animal Testing” if a product or chemical is safe for animals, only 8% of those products will work on humans.(John Ericson 1) Animals have been used for testing for thousands of years, due to their similarities with humans. Over the years public support has significantly decreased. The cruel practice has sparked controversy and needs to be stopped. Animal testing is used throughout the U.S which is why it needs to be banned. If animal testing was banned worldwide, it would prevent millions of animal deaths.

Animal testing should end because its harms the animals, other things can be tested instead of animals, it costs more to test animals, and the results in animals can be different then the results in humans which can be really bad and it can harm humans. It also can cause birth defects to babies who are born and people think it will work on babies because it works on animal babies.

When a young girl is looking at a magazine ad for the latest eyeshadow makeup, she notices that the model has on a shade of eyeshadow that looks gorgeous, but did she ever considered how that eyeshadow was manufactured? That makeup product was more than likely tested on animals for eye and skin irritation. Many research labs are using defenseless animals for testing and unnecessary experiments. There are three different types of people that have different thoughts. The one type of person really does not seem to bring the situation to life, and pushes it to the back of their mind, while the other type of person stands for animal testing because it may help save someone's life. Groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and other animal rights advocates fall in this category. There are some that believe animal testing to be an invaluable resource and should continue, such as some scientists and research groups. However, there appears to me to be a consensus that is closer to the middle: the belief and understanding that while there are benefits to animal testing, there are flaws in the practice and there should be changes to increase its efficacy while we simultaneously explore alternate testing methods. Many scientists and the National Institute of Health (NIH) subscribe to this idea. I aim to explore the benefits, problems, and implications of animal testing in order to reach a more informed conclusion about a position that is most validated by the information I have used.

This topic has proven difficult to communicate to one another about because there are individuals that believe animals should have certain rights and others believe that animals have no rights. Our group wanted to research this topic because we want to gain knowledge and become more understanding toward the people on both sides of the spectrum. Digging more into the research we found that cosmetics, medical use, and food are the most widely used methods for experimentation. With these research fields, people are finding ways to appeal to the ethics of the modern-day consumer.
