Music has been around for as many as 55,000 years. The Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Romans and African slaves all had different forms of music. Much like today, we have several different types of music, country, rock, soft rock, gospel, jazz, pop, R&B; one of the most controversial genres would be Hip-Hop and Rap along with urban black pop. Today, music is still pivotal. Music can personify people, by giving voice expressions to those who otherwise may not be heard. At the Super Bowl 50 halftime show in Santa Clara, California at the Levi’s stadium, actress, mogul and singer, Beyonce performed her newest single since her 2014 album, self entitled, “BEYONCE” called, “Formation.” This marked history as Bey’s most straightforward, controversial …show more content…
In the video, there is a clip where Beyonce and her dancers are inside of the plantation house and all of the women wore white and had big lace umbrellas, or when she was in the old school car with the tinted windows and her long golden weave braids hanging out or when they show Blue Ivy with her curly tresses. Her declaration to the world at that moment is despite her music and despite her millions and mainstream platform, she is still, more than ever a southern black woman. She wants the world to see she is still grounded and still deeply connected to her roots, paying attention to the world around her and still from Texas. She wants the world to see even though she is a mogul and headlines the biggest and the best events in the world, she is a human who has opinions and is not obligated to ignore them to please others. “Formation” is not about police bashing or how country she wants us to see she is, but it is about shedding light onto the culture of African Americans in today's society. Beyonce though music over time has competed and fallen into many categories and genres of music, but music has put her on a pedestal to where there was almost a disconnect from her less wealthy southern roots. People start to forget she is Southern and is of African American descent because she often does not address social and political issues involving blacks on her mainstream platform until Super bowl 50. The video has scenes of a church, a club, a hair store, a plantation house, old school cars, black cowboys, and clips of black lives matters rallies. She chooses these particular scenes to stand out and a make statements without having to verbally. She uses this tactical approach to address racial injustices, prejudice, embracing racial pride, and family through her platform. In the plantation house scene, Blue Ivy, Beyonce’s daughter is shown playing with other young black girls all crowned in natural thick curly afros. Beyonce quotes this scene with, “I like my baby hair with baby hair and afros”, being she is often criticized for leaving Ivy’s hair in its natural state She continues to acknowledge her unconditional love despite how the world views the ones she loves with, “ I like my negro with Jackson Five nostrils”, as Jay-Z is always scrutinized for his large assets. This shows Beyonce is proud and openly embracing her roots and her family. In the hair store scene she is shown twirling a cluster of blonde weave braids, smacking on chewing gum and running her hands through a wig on a mannequin head. She use this scene to characterize her as a typical average black women hence hair stores are influential to many black girls and women as well as very prominent in black communities/culture. She is addressing racial injustices, prejudice, embracing racial pride, and
One of the most prominent visuals in Lemonade is the setting of New Orleans, Louisiana. In current times, New Orleans is most closely associated with the Hurricane Katrina disaster of 2004, in which a strong hurricane devastated the city and left many killed, injured, or homeless. There was national criticism of the government’s handling of Katrina, stating that the government took too long to respond to the crisis due to the city being mostly populated by blacks. However, this is not the only aspect of New Orleans that is central to Lemonade’s narrative. The video also shows staples of the old American South during the time of slavery, such as plantation homes and slave quarters. In this setting, Beyoncé indulges a fantasy of an all-black utopia dominated by women, who dress up, take photographs, and
For nearly twenty years, Beyoncé has lived her life in the public eye yet she has always kept her cool, been submissive, and rather quiet when it came to her personal endeavors however after releasing the film “Lemonade”, we are able to see her in a vulnerable light. In Jeremy Helliger’s article: “Dear Beyhive: Stop Whining. Beyoncé Still Hasn’t Earned Her Album Of The Year Grammy” he addresses the idea that although Beyoncé was able to encourage black women to be proud and free, she also she missed the mark by adding raunchy, over the top content to her vulnerability.
Beyoncé's 'Lemonade', an album that depicts Black Female Empowerment is an amazing example of how women have been portrayed throughout previous generations and today. Many in which we can see her praising the black women, making them feel powerful and strong and beautiful, and her act in feminism to diminishing her now husband Jay-Z over a mistake. Somewhere else, ‘Lemonade’ references her music to home battles and problems occurring within the family threshold, and a portion of the more extensive issue looked by dark ladies today and all through history. Suspicion and outrage are not the main feelings intended in here, the subject is by all accounts more about recovery and redemption over what she and many women have been through throughout the years. "All Night", one of my favorite songs from Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ album highlights her passionate voyage that she plots all through the ‘Lemonade’ collection and how she almost lost her marriage with husband Jay-Z due to his betrayal towards her. In the record we heard her finding, grappling with lastly sympathetic her significant other's treachery. As many women would not appreciate faults done by their significant other, Beyonce presently accommodated suffers through his slip in marriage but stays together with Jay-Z, she needs Jay-Z close in her life in order to perhaps give their daughter Blue Ivy an ideal life with two loving parents. With many mistakes coming in life she displays, Beyoncé grasping her significant
This year, the Super Bowl halftime show became the center of controversy because of a major pop star’s political statement. An intense backlash occurred when Beyonce and her back-up dancers performed her politically charged anthem, “Formation,” while dressed in homage to the Black Panthers. Seeing African-Americans with afros dressed in black leather jackets and berets struck a negative cord with many Americans. Critics of the performance claimed that it was racially divisive and anti-police. Many attacked Beyonce for promoting what they believe to be a racist terrorist group.
Beyoncé recently released her music video on Saturday February 6, 2016. Beyoncé 's "Formation" video forms messages in text and visuals that fits today 's social issues. They call attention to the audience mainly for women and Black America. This piece of rhetoric creates meaning in society by giving us events and visuals to help the
In her speech of 1969, Ella Baker argued that one of the most important guidelines is that people ought not to start struggles that engage many people without relating to the people themselves and letting them note their abilities and potentials. In this case, Ella baker adhered to the latter principle throughout her involvement in the civil right movements. Ella Baker believed in the act of providing light for the people for them to find the right path on their own. With light, the people would definitely see the right path and would rarely fall in traps or temptations.

Topic: Informative Speech General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Beyoncé’s history as a music artist and actor, her accomplishments, and family life. This includes standards of beauty, empowerment, culture, and the shared parts of our history. The message that Beyonce is trying to convey to us is that there are real issues going on that are constantly being ignored. She is also stating that if no one else will voice their opinions on these issues then she will. As I analyzed the position that I received was discrimination to African American culuture, police brutality, tragedy, and cultural pride. I agree with the message behind this video/song. For many years cultural issues have been ignored and failed to be solved due to political
Beyoncé uses “Formation” as a continuation of the story in “Freedom” by making a statement about working hard to obtain what she wants and pride in her roots, particularly her southern black heritage. She alludes to how far she has come when she says she rocks her Givenchy dress (citation). Here, she is calling attention to how far she has come and the fortune she has earned by referencing her Givenchy dresses, a luxury brand only someone well off can afford. However, she did not forget where she came from and references her heritage in the second verse when she says “My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana” She is
The things that are being promoted by well-known black figures in the media are not the best things. Instead of spending the majority of their time promoting things such as HIV/AIDS awareness, their time is spent doing other less productive things. Many influential black people choose to flaunt things that seem to further prove the stereotypes that society has for blacks. Rapping about all the cars, money and “hoes” one has is not the best answer to this problem. According to Collins neither is boasting about the easy access that one has to such things including females. In addition, Collins focuses on the contradictions within the black community. She uses the example of black women always wanting to claim their independence and how sophisticated they are, but yet having lyrics about how “bootylicious” they are. It’s counterproductive. Omi and Winant note that racial etiquette is a set of interpretive codes and racial meanings which operate in the interactions of daily life. (Omi & Winant, 2011, pp. 23-24). The example also is a perfect example of what Omi and Winant refer to as “presentation of self,”which is determined by the rules shaped by our perception of race in a racial society. In other words, there is a contradictory presentation of self through the claims of “bootylicious”-ness and independence, and sophistication.

2. “You don't have to feel like a waste of space, you’re original, cannot be replaced.” In these lyrics I think that Katy Perry is saying that you shouldn’t feel like you are worthless, you are one-of-a-kind. These lyrics basically mean that you are unique and have much to offer to the world. “If you only knew what the future holds, after a hurricane comes a rainbow.” In these part of the lyrics I think that Katy Perry is saying don’t give up because there are always better times to come. The rainbow helps to signify hope and a brighter future.
