Music has been around for as many as 55,000 years. The Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Romans and African slaves all had different forms of music. Much like today, we have several different types of music, country, rock, soft rock, gospel, jazz, pop, R&B; one of the most controversial genres would be Hip-Hop and Rap along with urban black pop. Today, music is still pivotal. Music can personify people, by giving voice expressions to those who otherwise may not be heard. At the Super Bowl 50 halftime show in Santa Clara, California at the Levi’s stadium, actress, mogul and singer, Beyonce performed her newest single since her 2014 album, self entitled, “BEYONCE” called, “Formation.” This marked history as Bey’s most straightforward, controversial …show more content…

In the video, there is a clip where Beyonce and her dancers are inside of the plantation house and all of the women wore white and had big lace umbrellas, or when she was in the old school car with the tinted windows and her long golden weave braids hanging out or when they show Blue Ivy with her curly tresses. Her declaration to the world at that moment is despite her music and despite her millions and mainstream platform, she is still, more than ever a southern black woman. She wants the world to see she is still grounded and still deeply connected to her roots, paying attention to the world around her and still from Texas. She wants the world to see even though she is a mogul and headlines the biggest and the best events in the world, she is a human who has opinions and is not obligated to ignore them to please others. “Formation” is not about police bashing or how country she wants us to see she is, but it is about shedding light onto the culture of African Americans in today's society. Beyonce though music over time has competed and fallen into many categories and genres of music, but music has put her on a pedestal to where there was almost a disconnect from her less wealthy southern roots. People start to forget she is Southern and is of African American descent because she often does not address social and political issues involving blacks on her mainstream platform until Super bowl 50. The video has scenes of a church, a club, a hair store, a plantation house, old school cars, black cowboys, and clips of black lives matters rallies. She chooses these particular scenes to stand out and a make statements without having to verbally. She uses this tactical approach to address racial injustices, prejudice, embracing racial pride, and family through her platform. In the plantation house scene, Blue Ivy, Beyonce’s daughter is shown playing with other young black girls all crowned in natural thick curly afros. Beyonce quotes this scene with, “I like my baby hair with baby hair and afros”, being she is often criticized for leaving Ivy’s hair in its natural state She continues to acknowledge her unconditional love despite how the world views the ones she loves with, “ I like my negro with Jackson Five nostrils”, as Jay-Z is always scrutinized for his large assets. This shows Beyonce is proud and openly embracing her roots and her family. In the hair store scene she is shown twirling a cluster of blonde weave braids, smacking on chewing gum and running her hands through a wig on a mannequin head. She use this scene to characterize her as a typical average black women hence hair stores are influential to many black girls and women as well as very prominent in black communities/culture.
