Bowling for Columbine: Essay The documentary, “Bowling for Columbine”, produced and written by controversial director Michael Moore examines the culture of guns and its violent nature in the United States in order to gain insight into how massacres like the Columbine High School shooting incident was possible. The Columbine High gun massacre occurred in the small town of Littleton on the 20th of April, 1999 when students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 classmates and a teacher. The two fired over 900 bullets and injured dozens. Revolving around this incident, Moore ventures throughout the country as well as Canada to understand why the United States has an enormously higher rate of gun related homicides compared to any other industrialized…show more content…
He brings the two victims to the Wal-Mart headquarters, with bullets purchased at Wal-Mart still in their bodies. As their first attempt left them with nothing but a “sincere concern”, Moore returned with the press which saw the superstore publicly announcing their withdrawal to ammunition sales from their line of products. In the final cut of the film, Moore travels to Hollywood to interview the National Rifle Association’s president, Charles Heston. As the interviews begins with ease, Moore begins to pose more personal and accusatory questions. Heston, feeling at unease, begins to fight back against Moore’s relentless questions about guns, recent school shootings and the seemingly insensitive way Heston held pro-gun rallies in both Littleton and Grand Rapids within a week of the shootings there. Finally, Heston concludes the interview by abruptly getting up and leaving the interview. Although Moore has extracted his findings in a somewhat rough way, his intentions are admirable. He had examined any possible causes and although some may claim he had reformatted many of the footage included, he had effectively created a piece which caused viewers to re-think and reflect on the current
