It is one of the most dreaded messages to receive. . . “You have cancer”. In 2017, it is estimated that 1,688,780 people in the United States will receive this news (“American Cancer Society”). A diagnosis of cancer can be devastating for a person and his or her family. Many consider a cancer diagnosis a death sentence. It is important to understand what exactly cancer is. Despite a lack of new treatment methods, cancer survival rates are increasing; not much new techniques are being used, and cancer cannot be cured unless more research is done.
The origin of cancer within a person could be a result of multiple variables. Cancer could simply be a malfunction within the body. All living things are composed of cells. Cells house the genetic makeup of a person: deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. The human body is composed of trillions of cells which constantly divide to replace old or damaged cells (“The Cells”). For cells to divide, enzymes within the cell must duplicate the DNA. Mistakes in copying genetic code are common. This division of cells usually occurs in a consistent and controllable manner as the cell has the ability to check its DNA for errors and self-destruct if an error is potentially harmful; however, not all mistakes are caught. If the mistake in the DNA is not noticed and taken care of, the cell can develop and begin to behave abnormally. It may gain the ability to stimulate its own growth and ignore signals to stop. When this happens, a cluster of abnormal
During our lifetime we have heard of many people or know people that have cancer time and time again. We see it from movies to stories we see whether online or that we know. Most people know what it is but do we really know. Today I will talk about: General description of what cancer is, biology of the disease, symptoms, treatments, genetics and information on how to deal with this situation if you have or know of somebody that has cancer. At the end I hope you are inform what cancer is.
“Lets not call cancer patients as patients, they are cancer fighters. They are brave hearts” - Vikrmn, Gura. Nowadays, you hear more and more people getting cancer(13). It is a stress that many people worry about. You worry if one of your parents will get it. You pray your children don't’ get it. It’s a constant worry. You watch television and you can get this horrible monster from microwaving your food, drinking bottled water, carrying your phone in your pocket, using deodorant, coloring your hair and much more. Finding a cure for cancer would be a prayer answered for many.
Known as one of the world’s most deadly diseases, second only to heart disease, cancer is a well known killer. Cancer is a disease mankind has been burdened with since the first documented records of human existence (“The History of Cancer”). Until the early 1900s, cancer was exclusively treated with surgery, which didn’t usually yield very effective results. Only recently have doctors reached a point where they can use drug therapies to suppress the disease. Relative to humans, cancer treatments are very new. Because the market for pharmaceutical drugs is so new, they lack many regulations and pricing guidelines. This allows these new companies to create a drug and place almost any price on it. The system in place can very easily be taken
Studies indicate that over the last decade, the number of people suffering from cancer has increasingly gone higher. Cancer is a disease that brings fear upon its victims, especially when its diagnosis is made late. Needless to say, many people die from the fear rather than the disease itself. Medical practitioners do not term cancer as a disease but as a lifestyle condition. People may not be able to completely cure the cancer (depending on the type or stage of cancer) but they may change their perception or lifestyle, and thus be able to reduce the anticipated results.
Cancer is usually a terrifying word. Those who have never received a diagnosis of cancer, likely cannot fathom the anxiety such an event produces. Even forms of cancer that are highly treatable often bring about significant and immediate life changes for patients. Hopefully, the ideas from this article can help to demystify cancer, and make it somewhat easier to cope with the disease and its effects.
For years people have been looking for a cure for the devastating disease of cancer. Cancer is the third highest killer in the US with over 2,500,000 victims per year. Oncologists and scientists around the country are researching all forms of cancer in an effort to understand, treat, and ultimately defeat this disease. Already there have been numerous advances in the field, such as chemotherapy and gene therapy. One advance has been the use of a cell process known as apoptosis. By harnessing this normal cell process, scientists hope to have found an effective way to combat cancer.
Fighting cancer can be difficult, you have to do many treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, and many others that treat cancer. You have to do this at different times during the lifetime of cancer. Casey found out he had cancer after the doctors revealed a lump in his neck, he was diagnosed with lymphoma in the beginning of his junior year. Casey combatted cancer all of his junior year, he had to do school at home while travel to Dallas Texas to do his cancer treatment. Casey Fought cancer his junior year and still accomplished to graduate his senior year which makes him a hero by fighting his cancer, caring for his family, and being around others when he could easily get sick. One quote says, "Cancer does not define me, but how I live
Some people don’t know when they will be in the hospital next or how many days they have left. During the legacy unit many movements and people along with their legacies have been explored. The Stand Up For Cancer movement started out of a need for a cure for a cure for cancer and is still going today.
Cancer is a worldwide issue that has taken the lives of numerous people we know and love. These cancer patients went through more than just the health issues. They went through many sleepless nights, day after day of not feeling well, and the pain of all the treatments that followed. Each person went through more financial burdens than any one person should have to go through. They went through much more than anyone should ever have to experience. There are thousands of different kinds of cancer out there today, but one thing that all these cancers have in common is the fact that they all cause significant financial burdens, which should not be an issue. Not even one of them is easy to go through nor is it easy for one to have to get up and
Sitting across from the doctor’s desk, listening to him say the last three words no one ever imagined. You have cancer. The hard plastic chair and the atmosphere in the room suddenly feel colder as your body and mind go still. The doctor rambles on about the state of the condition, but nothing is absorbed. There is only one thing that needs answering. Is this curable? Cancer is a truly devastating verdict to be given and something no one is ready for. Every city, state, country, and continent in the world experiences great loss due to deaths from cancer. It does not discriminate between men and women, young or old, black or white. Dying from cancer is not how anyone would want
Cancer. We all know someone who has suffered from it or has passed away because of it. Cancer now affects one in every three people, and is the second highest cause of death in the United States. For decades, the medical community has been on the hunt for a cure for cancer, and have been subjected to intense ridicule from the public because of a lack of progression toward a possible cure. In recent years, many scientists, doctors, researchers, and the general public have come to believe that the cure for cancer is being suppressed because of this lack of progress. Those who say it is suppressed claim that the drugs used to treat cancer actually cause cancer, making a patient sicker and sicker. As a result, the patients are forced to spend
I know I shouldn’t be eavesdropping. I don’t know what emotions to have about this. Last summer, my family found out that my poppop was diagnosed with stage 4 Cancer. The Cancer spread to his whole body. He got a few shots and the doctors said he was getting worse. He started to make a list of everywhere he wanted to go before he died. He wanted to visit Alaska, Canada, Washington D.C, and to the annual family camping trip to Frontier Town. As the weeks and months went on, the doctors said he was getting better until one day he showed up at the hospital. He told them the story of what had happened, “I was just walking around my house and I laid down on the couch, when I tried to stand up my legs gave out and I fell to the ground. No one was home so I couldn’t call for help.” The doctors were upset to hear that his legs were already giving out. They told him that he had to stay in the hospital for a little while and they put him on medication. The medication was helping him and the doctors thought that he was getting better, but they said that he should not be walking around anymore. The doctors said that if he wanted to get somewhere he has to move around by someone pushing him in a wheelchair. He visited Washington D.C and he said he had so much fun and that he was really glad he got to go there before he died.
According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common cancer, accounting for about half of all cancers in the United States. More than 3 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States alone this year (Skin Cancer Foundation). Basal-cell carcinomas constitute approximately 90 percent of all non-melanoma skin cancers, making it the most common cancer in humans. Basal-cell carcinomas or BCCs are abnormal, uncontrolled growths or lesions that arise in the skin’s basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis. This type of cancer most often occurs in skin that is frequently exposed to sunlight or other ultraviolet radiation such as the face, ears, neck and limbs (Rubin et al.). As ultraviolet rays
The general public does not have a complete understanding of how cancer research is conducted. When a person gets diagnosed with cancer he believe that his doctor has the medicine and all the necessary tools to solve and cure their cancer immediately. As result of this, this misunderstanding is what can cause a huge rift and misinterpretation of what cancer therapies and medicines are actually used for. The medications used to treat cancer are predominately experimental, meaning for some cancer patients the formation of more cancer cells may become dormant or suppressed, but for others the medicine available may in fact do the complete opposite. Because cancer is such a complex and unique illness and everyone’s body is different, this alone puts a displacement on how the effect of what medications can be used to treat certain patients. Since there are multiple levels of cancer, the general public has to understand that currently, today, there is not one drug produced that will completely eliminate cancer cells and their effects. Nevertheless, this does not mean researches and experimentalist and not taking the necessary steps to getting closer to providing the aid need for this disease. The steps researches and experimentalist usually take when trying to understand cancers typically are made to help prevent, diagnosis, treat, and cure the on-set of this disease. The specific steps are to first do basic research to identify the cause(s) and
During my research I learned a lot about cancer. I focused on the history, affected people, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. I used evidence from websites and medical journals to back up my research. After completing my research I have more understanding about the people that are having their lives affected by cancer. A problem I found with cancer is expensive, painful and hard to go through. Therefore I think people should be able to make their end of life decision when faced with cancer. There is a lot of research occurring now around the world, we need to keep up the research to find a cure for cancer.
